Re: Last Icon Maker Standing XI

I am nothing short of terrified this week I'm not 100% happy with my icon but I think I've done the best job with it that I can.

Also, is there any reason why my icon should look any different in Photoshop than when I upload it online? Because to me it looks more washed-out when uploaded. Or am I just imagining things?

Did you save your images as a JPEG or a PNG? JPegs have a tendancy of when they compress data (your image) to lose quality

Re: Last Icon Maker Standing XI

I guess I should post a clarification and an answer to Rell's question that it is OK to have just one character in the icon as long as through text and whatever else you use in icon making that it has to do with the first meeting of the two specific characters.

Hope I was clear on that, I'm typing like a madman on my supper break here at work

Do you find that is always true? Sometimes the PNGs seem to come out with less quality for me when I upload them. It could very well be a user issue because I have only just started dealing with saving graphics, but of all of those I have saved using PNG, they have either coming looking the same, or little worse. Although one time a file did actually look better, so I am a bit confused on that point still. Does it make a difference what effects you have used, etc.?

I find that PNG's always look the same for me. If you save as a JPEG, you can set the settings so that you save as either high or low quality, which also has worked pretty well for me in the past (especially for very large graphics). The only thing I would not recommend is saving things as GIFs (unless you have to because they're animated), because GIFs almost always come out worse. Hope that helps a bit.

Re: Last Icon Maker Standing XI

To add to that, I've also found that BMP's come out for the worse. They aren't very good quality at all. I have also had the best results with PNG's and JPG's.

Yeah that is what I noted as well. I did put my JPEG settings to um...something good I read about a while back, but I forget now what it was. I think that might be why they look the same for me as well. Of course I am not sure either is at optimal setting - or even that my monitor is showing me optimal graphics. . Thanks though.

ps. my animation program (animation shop) has quality settings for GIF also - and a further optimizer and so on, and some of them come out looking very good - as good as the JPEGS at times. But I know they were horrible before I changed the settings - spots and lights and stuff, and the writing was blurred. So settings made a huge difference - again I don't remember what I did, but that I did on my own with trial and error figuring I could somehow get them to look better and it eventually worked.

Re: Last Icon Maker Standing XI

Ok I have another question. I've searched through Adobe Help and everything and figure someone here might know. I'm trying to put type on an image. It's a jpg image. Obviously the type is on a separate layer. I'm using CS3. For some reason I cant type. I click on the type tool then on my image (I've tried dragging a type box too) and no curser comes up. I'll type and then nothing shows up. It's like.. invisible type. When I select a different took my type layer will be named whatever I typed as it usually does but I still cant see any text. Any ideas? My num lock isn't on or anything.

Re: Last Icon Maker Standing XI

I don't use that program, but I know when I can't see my type and everything else seems ok, it is usually because I have the layer I am typing on buried and didn't realize it - so the type is buried beneath something else. But your program may be different.

Re: Last Icon Maker Standing XI

Try reseting your preferences. Hold the CRTL+ALT+DELETE keys down at the startup of Photoshop. . When it askes about deleting a file, click YES. Close photoshop and restart. It will take longer as the Preference file rebuilds. Hopefully the text will now appear normally.

I hope this works!

As for JPEGs vs PNGs the main reason I use PNGs is because it produces a smoother and richer colorization. JPEGs saved on my computer have a tendency to wash out colors because of compression. You should know though that it depends in what program you save JPEGs, you get different results. It seems, in my experience that saving a JPEG in Photoshop produces good quality but larger file. Paintshop Pro (the program I use) really compresses the heck out of it and lowers the quality. PNG vs JPEG is a choice you'll just have to test out and see what works the best for you.

As a rule, BMP are for one dimensional images like solid circle graphs or boxes. I would never recommend them more graphics.

You know? I think I would love a general graphics question thread Does anyone else think that would be beneficial?

Re: Last Icon Maker Standing XI

we definitely need a general graphics question thread . most people ask their friends or the contest anyways but it would still be good for it all to be in one place
