I think it's just a sort of noise that only they can understand.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

They seem to project thoughts into their victims, and draw out the victims own thoughts. Telepathy? Or, maybe just dementorese......

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

I don't even think that the dementors really speak at all. They may just communicate like animals do. Just through their thoughts and actions. They might just also project their thoughts into their victims, and not really speak or communicate with each other at all.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

I have googled dementors, looked in the lexicon and other sources and I can find nowhere where that it says that dementors were once humans. I believe that in LOTR a wraith was once a man, but this seems to not be the case with dementors.

They DO say that they have a seemingly human shape, but that is where the similarities end. I like to think the dementors communicate in a telepathic way, they don't really have mouths, it's pretty much a hole where the mouth should be that they use to perform their "kiss". (But how can you "kiss" without a mouth, you ask? I don't have a clue, that's just how they are, I guess...)

Im sure they can understand different languages, but just can't speak.

Hmmm... Interesting question.

I think that they can understand English, but would speak through their minds, or else use a creepy, rattly voice.

perhaps they just understand the emotions that they feel from their victims. They were attracted to the quidditch game because of the strong emotions there, they came out to feed on it.

I agree with this. I think they use emotions and maybe even communicate with each other in some nonverbal way, like mind reading.

Not really on the topic of this thread, I know. But I had a thought that the dementors came into the stands right after Harry noticed Sirius in the stands. Coincidence? Or maybe they just were there for the high emotions. Who knows?

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

I'm not sure how they talk to people, although the mind invasion theory is a good possibility. I bet among themselves they have a sort of collective consciousness. After all, have we ever heard of a lone dementor acting on its own? It may seem that way in PoA, but the descriptions imply that there were multiple dementors checking out the train. Never once have we seen them act by themselves.

It's an interesting question. I guess they just grew to understand English?

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

Perhaps Fudge talked and the Dementors wrote out the letters in the air using magic. ESP just seems too far-fetched for something which uses "magic" to even make the prisoners suffer.

In the OotP book, for example, we see in the beginning that Dudley is not "telepathically" harmed, but rather, the Dementor had to physically suck his being out. This was the same case with Sirius Black.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

It's obvious---they speak dementia!!!

Truthfully, I'd guess a form of mental telepathy.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

I agree with everyone here that they understand but don't speak English. I'm sure if Fudge was actually communicating with them, it was done through written communication or some other magical technique we don't quite understand.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

I think that being around English speaking people for so long, they would pick up on the language, but not speak it. Just understand.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

I imagine they communicate with each other and humans telepathically, and without words.

Are non-humans like Centaurs and Merpeople affected by Dementors?

I agree that they may communicate telepathically, or through just reading the human's mind or something.

However, maybe the dementors have no need to speak. I think they would be able to understand a message someone was trying to convey to them by sensing the feelings that person is having, not necessarily by the words they are speaking. Because dementors can suck happiness and life out of people, they seem to operate on the 'sensory' or 'spiritual' level. They may use their aura to communicate, and really have no need for words.

I wouldn't really like words coming out of their terrible mouths anyhow
