We know he was imprisoned, according to the Potterwatch episode the trio hears:
DH, Ch. 22"Well, as regular listeners will know, several of the more outspoken supporters of Harry Potter have now been imprisoned, including Xenophilius Lovegood, erstwhile editor of The Quibbler -" said Lupin.

"At least he's still alive!" muttered Ron.

We can also assume he was released and is doing well after the war, according to the 2007 Bloomsbury Chat:
J.K. Rowling and the Live Chat, Bloomsbury.com, July 30, 2007Katie Mosher: How is the quibbler doing these days

J.K. Rowling: Pretty well, actually. It has returned to its usual condition of advanced lunacy, and is appreciated for its unintentional humour.

Re: Little Questions Answered v.21

Myrtle gave a tragic sob, rose up in the air, turned over, and dived
headfirst into the toilet, splashing water all over them and vanishing
from sight, although from the direction of her muffled sobs, she had
come to rest somewhere in the U-bend.

The Chamber of Secrets - The Chamber of Secrets

Myrtle was a ghost, how was she able to splash water all over the bathroom, when she dived into the toilet? Should'nt she have gone in without a splash? Is there anything about ghosts in HP that say they can disrupt things in the living world?

Was Myrtle or other ghosts able to push people or lift objects too? Any Thoughts?

I wonder if the manor of her death caused her to have more contact with the real world than other ghosts ? She was the only one we know of that was killed by the basilisk . Perhaps that is what gives her the ability to splash water around .

Re: Little Questions Answered v.21

Could be. Though the Books don't give her any special abilities. IIRC The only physical reaction to the living by a ghost is the feeling of icy coldness if the ghost either touched or passed through a person.

Re: Little Questions Answered v.21

I don't recall any other ghosts moving objects in the books, though Nearly Headless Nick, when petrified, was able to be moved by a fan. And, as The_Green_Woods says, the feeling of coldness when a human touches a ghost. But JKR gave us this on Pottermore:

Pottermore, GhostsGhosts can pass through solid objects without causing damage to themselves or the material, but create disturbances in water, fire and air. The temperature drops in the immediate vicinity of a ghost, an effect intensified if many congregate in the same place. Their appearance can also turn flames blue. Should part or all of a ghost pass through a living creature, the latter will experience a freezing sensation as though they have been plunged into ice-cold water.

This explanation makes sense to me, as ghosts appear to be concentrated forms of energy, a bit like the classic "elements" of fire, air, and water.

And in regard to poltergeists:
Pottermore, PeevesThe name 'poltergeist' is German in origin, and roughly translates as 'noisy ghost', although it is not, strictly speaking, a ghost at all. The poltergeist is an invisible entity that moves objects, slams doors and creates other audible, kinetic disturbances. It has been reported in many cultures and there is a strong association with the places where young people, especially adolescents, are living.

She said as much on her old website, too:
Jkrowling.com, F.A.Q.Peeves chews gum, how can he when he is a ghost? (Nearly Headless Nick can't eat).

Peeves isn't a ghost; he was never a living person. He is an indestructible spirit of chaos, and solid enough to unscrew chandeliers, throw walking sticks and, yes, chew gum.

Some fun old threads on the subject:
Is Moaning Myrtle a normal ghost?
Moaning Myrtle and water

Re: Little Questions Answered v.21

Thank MrSleepyHead. I had not read the Pottermore notes. Ghosts seem to turn the temperature down, whenever they manipulate an element, it looks like. The closer the contact, the colder the feeling would be.

Just curious (since I haven't been around for a while)...has Jo ever named any of "the fifty" (aside from Tonks and Lupin, etc) who died in the Battle of Hogwarts?

I don't think so. If she had, we'd know for sure whether Lavender lived or died.

Yes, his death is in the book. IgoRetla is asking about a list of people in addition to the ones we know.

Hermione did not know Voldy's real name was Tom Riddle...do you think it was not mentioned in a History of magic, or did she simply overlook it? .It seems weird she did not know, taking into consideration she knew a lot of other stuff.

Most people did not know that Riddle became Voldemort. In chapter 18, "Dobby's Reward", Dumbledore says so when Harry, Ron & the Weasleys are in his office after Harry gives the diary to Dumbledore:
Quote:
He turned around to the Weasleys, who were looking utterly bewildered.

"Very few people know that Lord Voldemort was once called Tom Riddle. I taught him myself fifty years ago, at Hogwarts."

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff...

Re: Little Questions Answered v.21

Actually I wonder if Voldemort and the Death Eaters are even mentioned in History of Magic?

I think in the book published at the time the trio was at school the answer would be no. This is based on Hermione saying over and over that she had read the book . She never quotes anything from the book about Voldemort or his death eaters or the outcome of wizard war 1.
I think that in any post Wizard war 2 [Harry's years at Hogwarts] edition it would have a chapter covering everything that was public knowledge about the war.

Re: Little Questions Answered v.21

Neither Voldemort nor Harry were in A History of Magic. After Hermione tells Harry about Godric's Hollow in DH:
DH, Ch. 16, Godric's Hollow, Page 319, US, HB"You and your parents aren't mentioned," Hermione said, closing the book," because Professor Bagshot doesn't cover anything later than the end of the nineteenth century."

But we could glean that before DH, too. From Hermione's introduction in SS:
SS, Ch. 6, The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, Page 106, US, PB"Harry Potter," said Harry.

"Are you really?" said Hermione. "I know all about you, of course - I got a few extra books for background reading, and you're in Modern Magical History and The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth Century.

We know from Harry's shopping list that A History of Magic was a required text for first year students (SS, Ch. 5, p. 66). Since Hermione mentioned only extra books for background reading from which she learned all about Harry (and, likely, Voldemort), it would have been unlikely that A History of Magic included Voldemort's fall to Harry, and possibly Voldemort at all. But Hermione's comment in DH clarifies that nothing about Voldemort would have been covered.

Makes me wonder, though, why Hermione didn't look towards A History of Magic to find Nicolas Flamel during the trio's search in SS. It seems unlikely Flamel wouldn't be included in the comprehensive history text pre-nineteenth century, though perhaps it predated her consideration (1300s/early 1400s, though we know she did consider events in the 14th century [Wizard's Council in the 14th century headed by Burdock Muldoon (Fantastic Beasts)]). Given Hermione's commitment of her books to memory, though, perhaps it wasn't there, or else the trio was overly fixated on recent events.
