Re: Foul Language in DH

Foul language is one thing, but what about the full-frontal nudity in the Dursley's kitchen?

Re: Foul Language in DH

I was much more bothered by the censored swearing than the actual swearing, especially "arse." And the swearing has been waiting to happen since the fifth book. They really aren't children's books anymore. I have to say, I was delighted when Molly swore, as it was basically the perfect situation for the first swear word in the series.

People are saying that there was a second time, what was that?

A few years ago, i would've cared, but not now, anyways, I would swear too in the circumstances, and I usually don't swear. Also, the trio is older

Well, I definitely think the language was needed, and I really don't think that her choice of words in those circumstances was foul. The movies have taken it upon themselves to include words that weren't included in the books in the first place, and I don't think any less of them because of it. If the words were being tossed around carelessly, then maybe it would have bothered me.

Arse wasn't censored.

Were they completley naked? I mean, they had underwear on, didn't they?

Ron's "*******" and Molly's "*****" were noticeable. Obviously, JKR thought they were necessary. Perhaps if I had smaller children, I would be concerned about their use. However, my kid are all older and to be honest, I hear far worse from them on a regular basis and not just when their lives are in peril.

It comes with age perhaps, letting the curse words fly.. In any case, Molly's words to Bellatrix were fitting for the situation, and I can't imagine a reader who didn't feel the same way about Bellatrix.

Re: Foul Language in DH

I don't have much of an issue with the swearing and almost-swears. All of them fit the plot and "feel" of the book well, so that's OK. And I think that most children have already heard most of it themselves, so it isn't like they're being exposed to new words. The only fear I have is younger kids is that they may think it's "OK" to use the words if JK used them, but parents should be able to smooth that out.

I didn't see anything wrong with the swearing. It is war and appropriate! I hear worse things come out the mouths of much younger children in daily life!!!!

"...they all began stripping off with impunity, clearly much more at ease with showing his body than they would have been their own."

Bloomsbury p.49

The change of clothes is for the benefit of those whose clothes are too big or small for their Harry body. So those whose clothes are too small would obviously have to ditch their underwear.

Re: Foul Language in DH

Hahahaha, when I read that scene about them stripping off with no care, I just started laughing because I pictured six naked Harry's while the real one just stared them down. Then Ron talking about the tattoo was just funny.

Also, I noticed how Ron wasn't afraid to make comments about Merlin's saggy left..umm, well yeah you got it. That was uncharacteristic (kinda, but not really) of Ron. Then we have Molly calling Bellatrix a..umm..female dog, , which was kind of funny and odd in the same way.

I like how this book was more adult than any of the others. It was, for the most part, funny.

Re: Foul Language in DH

I didn't think the swearing was all that bad, since I tend to swear a lot myself. The swears they used where fairly bland, and I didn't consider stuff like "Merlin's..." whatever to be swears. I only considered *itch by Molly and *astard by Ron a swear.

Re: Foul Language in DH

Like I said before, I'm all for letting it all out but I do think Jo was pushing it to the edge with this one knowing lots of young children are reading this book. I'm sure my mother back up in Chicago will blow her top when she gets to the Mrs. Weasley/Bellatrix scene.

it has at least some purpose:they are growing older and becoming more and more frustrated at the war. people lose control of their words when their emotions are soaring

Re: Foul Language in DH

The foul language seemed too forced. like she was trying to prove how "grown up" the book/characters are, especially since there wasn't nearly as much foul language in the previous books. It just seemed to come out of nowhere.

Re: Foul Language in DH

Although I didn't mind the swearing myself, I kindof felt that it was not needed. I guess I felt that she wrote 6 books with out it essentially why use so much now.
