Re: Gaeilge

So, to contribute in a tiny way to the celebrating of St Paddy's day at this place,
here is an old Gaelic song called "An Cailín Gaelach". Below are the lyrics and the
recorded melody in voice. I wish i had other example of this song to give you, other
than my own singing (which at this time was recorded in primitive field conditions--away from studio now),
but that's what's available so hope you bear with it

An Cailín Gaelach

B'áite lion féin bheith ar thaobh mala shléibhe
is cailín gaelach a bheith i mo chomhair.
Bheinn dá bréagadh is ag teannadh léi
'gus dár lion féin 'riú, gur deas ár ndóigh.

Ag éirí dom féin ar maidin an lae ghil
is mé ag gabháil fán choill chraobhaí is mé ag seoladh bó,
tharla dom an spéirbhean in suí ar an léana
is a fallaing léi is í lán de chnónn.

D'fhiafair mé díthe go ciúin is go céillí:
'An nglacfaidh tú póg uaim, a stór mo chroí?'
D'fhoscail sí a béilín is labhair sí Béarla
is é dúirt sí: 'Pray sir and let me be.'

Is maith an airí ar na buaibh á santú
agus bheinn á seoladh amuigh sa lá;
is agus bainne iad, 'theacht an tsamhraidh,
is is mar gheall ar bhólacht a phóstar mná.

hear (an outline of) the song here: An Cailín Gaelach

* * *

cheers!

Comhghairdeachais leat as sin, princessjaffa, tá cuid tabhachtach den scrudu taobh thiar duit anois.

Aontaim leat faoin scrudu cáinte- má tá daoine chun an Ghaeilge a fheiceail mar teanga beo, teanga don chumarsaid, caithfear nios mó béim a bheith ar an chumarsáid in áit ar an bhfiliocht agus pros. Tá siadsan tabhachtach freisin, is cuid den teanga agus den gcultur iad, ach b'fhéidir go mbeadh sé nios fearr da mbeadh dánta agus scéalta/leabhair nua-aimseartha ar an gcuraclam freisin, in áit an méid sin rudai ón ochtu/naoiu aois déag.

Hi, dswendigo! Fáilte go CoS.

Cómhghairdeachais leat as déanamh an Ardteist! An bhfuil sé criochnaithe agat anois?
(Have you tried Ctrl + Alt + letter to get the fada? Doesn't work with i or u though -goes to italics or underline).

Re: Gaeilge

A Gaeilge thread - Brilliant!!!!

I was at the Gaeltach in Connemara this summer and totally fell in love with the language, so it will be really nice to have somewhere to keep it up!
( I'm not fluent just yet so if I do make a few mistakes, sorry in advance!)

Is aoibheann liom an teanga seo.Tá sé go hiontach!
Táim nua chun COS. Thosáigh mé ag léamh HP nuair a bhi mé seacht mbliana d'aois. An leabhar is fearr i GOF nó DH agus an scannán is fearr i POA.

Also, to get the accent or fáda just press Alt Gr and the letter you want.

Fáilte go CoS, Maria!
Don't worry about any mistakes, just enjoy, any Gaeilgeoiri will get what you're saying anyway, and your Gaeilge looks fine to me.

Ni raibh mé riamh i gConamara, ach taitnionn Corca Dhuibhne agus Iarrthar Chorcai go mór liom. (Agus an teanga, ar ndóigh.)

An leabhar HP is fearr liom ná PoA agus an scannán is fearr liom ná OotP, ceapaim. Táim ag tnuth go mór le mo email ó Pottermore anois. An raibh tu in ann cláraigh leis nó an mbeidh tu ag fanacht go dti Deireadh Fómhair?

Re: Gaeilge

I am so jealous. About all I know are what's on signs (Oifig an Phoist, etc.) and a few greetings.

Is there a good place to start if I want to learn more of my ancestral language?

Fáilte! Cad é mar atá tú?

Is é Deathly Hallows nó Goblet of Fire an leabhar is fearr liom fosta ach is é Deathly Hallows part 2 an scannán is fearr liom.

Cad é do bharúil ó Pottermore?

I haven't spoke Irish in ages. Good to see this thread resurrected though

Well done on starting to learn a new language, ccs! There are quite a few websites that have audio and lessons or details of lessons.

http://www.gaeilge.ie/
is the website of Foras na Gaeilge/The Irish Institute, and gives details of self-taught courses, and links to a lot of useful websites, like http://www.abair.tcd.ie//
, which allows you to type in a phrase, and it will be synthesised for playback. (abair = say/speak)

http://www.daltai.com/home.htm - this one has a lot of information, lots of audio under different headings, and gives details of Irish language courses internationally. (daltai = pupil/learner)

http://talkirish.com/
provides an online course, with an annual subscription fee of €20.

I'll check out some of the others before I post them here.

And of course, there's this thread if you've any questions or want to practise. Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat - best of luck.

Ní fuair mé an ríomhphoist fós. Déanaim seiceáil ar mo ríomhphoist ró-mhinic le cúpla seachtain anois.
Cén teach ina bhfuil tú ar Pottermore? Táim ag tnúth go mór leis an eolas nua!

Thank you so much, FD! I've wanted to learn Irish all my life. Maybe I can get my cousin to do this with me. We both have a fascination with our family roots.

Maith go leor! Tá mé ag Chapter 15: The Forbidden Forest anois. Tá eagla orm á criochnú, níl mé ag iarraidh fanacht le Chamber of Secrets go foill
B'fhéidir go mbeidh a chríochnóidh mé an tseachtain seo, nuair a léigh mé an leabhar arís agus na rudaí a aimsiú.

Is é Ravenclaw an teach is fearr
An mhaith leat Potions?
