Re: Hebrew

This is a great thread. I never was Bar Mitzvah'ed, but I made an attempt to teach myself Hebrew about 40 years ago (literally) along with a Mormon friend who was interested. Actually, he did better than I did. Oh, well!! Now I'm a Jewish librarian at a Roman Catholic school. How's that for a mixture?

Re: Hebrew

One of my favorite songs is in Hebrew. I don't remember who sang it (it was a woman) and it's called Ba'a Eleichem?

Greeney, you're right. Hakol besseder is "is everything alright?".

Re: Hebrew

shalom lekulam, ani Becky, a non-Jewish American who likes learning other languages and recently became interested in Hebrew because I randomly found Gadi Elbaz's "Halayla ze Hazman" on Youtube and fell in love with the music. (I especially liked how Gadi was like "achad shtaim shalooooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh (אחת שתיים שלוווווווווווווווווווווווווווווווווווווווווווווווו ווווש)" every time he sang it in the song )

Re: Hebrew

Do we really have to transliterate everything? It's a pain in the neck. Especially since there isn't any really good way to transliterate the Chet, Chaf, and 'ayin. If I type in Hebrew, can all of you read it?

I didn't recall that Ofra Haza recorded Yerushalaim Shel Zahav. She had a beautiful voice.

Re: Hebrew

Now it's time for something different: Harry Potter related items in their Hebrew words!

A Broomstick is called Matate' (sounds as it's written)

A Spell is called either Kishoof or Kessem

A Potion is called Shiqui (Pronounced she-ku-ee)

Is that interesting or is that interesting?!

Re: Hebrew

O.k, everybody. As some of you mat know, yesterday was Purim. So today you'll learn how to say things that relate to Purim:

Mask is Masecha (pronounced ma-se'-cha)

Rattle is Ra'ashan

Scroll (as in the Scroll of Ester) is Megila

Sounds good, right?

This is why I hate transliterations. Tzarachti means "I screamed". It's spelled: tzade, resh, chet, tav, yod. The word you wanted to use is ;" hitstarachti " which is spelled: hey, tzade, tav, resh, chaf, tav, yod.

I've underlined the root letter that makes the difference. Most Hebrew words have three root letters. The rest of the letters are modifying prefixes and suffixes. " Hitztarachti " is a reflexive verb which means " I had to go". The root letters: Tzade, resh, chaf, mean "need".
