Re: Swedish / Svenska

Hej!

I'm going on holiday to Sweden next year and I've been having a look at a phrase-book we've got. I think I know enough to get by, and I understand the pronunciation.

I have one question, though: in some phrases with "you" in them, the translation says "ni/du" - in what circumstances would I use each of them?

Tack!

Re: Swedish / Svenska

ni is you in plural and du is singular... basically ni could be the polite form of the singular as well but nobody really talks like that...

Re: Swedish / Svenska

So if I wanted to ask "do you speak French" (I don't really know enough Swedish to have a proper conversation, but would feel really arrogant asking someone to speak my language - English - when I'm in their country. If they speak French then we'd both be speaking a second language; we'd be on common ground) would I say "Talar du Fransk?"?

Tack!

talar du franskA...

and most people in sweden speak english really really well so I don't think you'd have to ask if they speak french...

Re: Swedish / Svenska

Hejsan! Jag kommer från Finland och mitt modersål är finska men jag har lärt mig svenska fem år nu så jag kan lite svenska. Jag tar studenten på våren så mer svenskträning för mig.

Okay maybe I'll stop now cause my brain is locked right now. I'm sure all the prepositions are completely wrong but I find them the most difficult thing to learn in Swedish. The grammar itself is fairly simple, at least when compared to other languages.. But yeah, I guess it's a useful language to know in Scandinavia although it's rather pointless cause nearly everybody in Scandinavia are fluent in English. But we have to take it so there's nothing I can do about that.

Not so. Everything was OK, except that something is missing in the last part after 'våren'.

Bettiina, the only thing that sounds a bit out place to me is

The verb "lära sig" corresponds to "learn" in English, so what you said would be "I have learned Swedish", meaning that you've finished the process and now know the language. I don't think that's really what you meant, right? I'd say "jag har studerat svenska" or "jag har läst svenska". And don't forget the preposition - "jag har läst svenska i fem år".
And I'm not sure if you can really say "på våren". The more common expression would be "till våren" or "under våren".

Så trevligt, jag ska också ta studenten i år, fast i Sverige. När börjar man läsa svenska i Finland? Är det i högstadiet? Jag kom aldrig vidare än årskurs fyra i Finland, sedan flyttade vi till Stockholm.

Re: Swedish / Svenska

Right. I judged it only from the point of understandability.

Um, I can read a little bit of what you guys are writing here. But not all of it! Norwegian is easier to understand than Swedish though! (I'm Dutch btw)

This is a "tongue twister" in Danish. Are there any funny sayings in Swedish that are hard to say?
