Create your own language!

Has anyone else had a go at making their own language? I'm doing it at the moment, and I was interested in hearing if anyone else has. If you have, what bits did you find hard? How did you go about it?

Re: Create your own language!

I've come up with a technique that makes the words pretty easy. but the grammer is hard. I've been testing it by coming up with phrases to translate. I try to apply the rules I have got so far, and if I come across something that doesn't fit what I already have, I make a new rule for it.

Re: Create your own language!

Eh. Well the word inventing isn't hard per se, but moreso just tedious and slightly annoying, though I am getting in the hang of doing it more often. I try not to make too many words in one day, or else I'll be at risk of them all sounding the same. What kind of grammar does your language have?

Re: Create your own language!

It's based on word groups, with a word and then prefix words that do things like change the tense, etc.

...When I was 13. I don't remember much about it, but it sounded vaguely eastern European and I had an entire vocab list and basic sentence structure.

Not sure about languages, but some people (such as siblings and close friends) often develop their own codes.

Wow! A shame that you don't remember it, it sounds pretty good!

My friends and I have made up a language based on little images on our first year in High School

Oh yeah! A friend of mine created a code once that involved every letter being spelled out phonetically. So to write out the word "cat," for instance, you would write "seeaytee."

I made up a code some years ago wherein each letter of the alphabet was missing one or two parts. So if I were to write "the quick brown fox," it would look something like this:

I waffled a bit on the letter B. I completely forgot what it was supposed to look like.

Looks like some ancient alphabet, Iggy!

Re: Create your own language!

It reminds me a little of the runic alphabet.

We have attempted to do that too, but it is too complicated

Re: Create your own language!

Here's a handy resource. A list of the 500 most common words in english. apparently, these words are enough to let you have a conversation in most day to day situations.

I've found that I don't even need a lot of these words in the language I am creating. Words like pronouns (he, she, it, they etc) have been replaced by just too words in my language. I use jehtay proper nouns (including words for family members like mother), and I use rahtay for any other noun (like cat, hammer, truck). I have also combined any pronoun referring to oneself (me, I, myself) to rah, and pronouns for some else (you, either an individual or a group) is si. And to say "you and me," one would say rahsi.

Still, if you are creating a vocabulary for your own language, it's good to know what words to concentrate on.

Hee, hee, sister soul. I did the same... only it sounded vaguely western European.

Re: Create your own language!

Tiberius, what's your language called? And could you post a short passage in your language with an English translation underneath? It sounds really interesting.

Re: Create your own language!

it's called Layinti. Here's an example...

To say "The little boy sat in the chair" is:

rortay torthikah rahjay jorthitay kijaymeh kahmay jehrahmeh nehror rortay torthay

A literal translation would be:

The child that is male sat on the chair.

A more literal translation is possible, but it would be very clumsy English.

Re: Create your own language!

I tried one just last year, it was loosely based on Japanese (with a syllabary rather than an alphabet), but I got bored making a list of words and quit.

For those that are interested, can I recommend "The Language Construction Kit" at www.zompist.com/kit.html?

Re: Create your own language!

I've tried to create languages in the past, but usually got really bored with them. When I was really little, though, a friend of mine created a written language and my group of friends all got really good at writing in it.
