What language do the Dementors speak?

While re-reading Prisoner of Azkaban, I got to the part when Harry overhears Mr. and Mrs. Weasley arguing in the Leaky Cauldron. Mr. Weasley says that Fudge had "talked" with the prison guards ( the Dementors). I thought the Dementors didn't speak, just made a rattling sound. So, how do they communicate or does Fudge speak their "language?" Do Dementors speak?

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

Maybe Fudge played cherades with the Dementors? xD

Hm, well, apparently Lupin talked to a Dementor, and it seemed to understand (or did it?), but it didn't talk back, and he had to use the patronus charm to remove the Dementor from the compartment. Hmm... when we eventually saw what's under the hood, it didn't look like that gaping, shapeless hole for its mouth would have been much use for speech. Maybe Dementors really can't talk, but use their mind-invasion skills to communicate instead? Or maybe they'd just mime

Hmm.. interesting question. I have no idea. They seem to understand people, but I can't really imagine a Dementor speaking.

I would imagine English, since thats the mother tongue of the British prisoners. I would also think that France and Germany would have there own prisons.

I think Dementors understand english, but the don't speak. If the do communicate with eachother it is through the mind, but they dont communicate with humans.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

In interactions with humans, I imagine they probably understand english/frech/whatever language they are taught to understand, but they themselves cannot speak it (probably because they can't. They're described as having large holes for mouths....but no tongues or anything to say words). Among themselves, it's probably instinct or telephathic.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

The dementors, as creatures that appear both ethereal and material, and creatures that feed on feelings must have a connection to the psyche, and therefore probably communicate through thought: ESP. Fudge probably spoke, but they read his thoughts.

They may not speak directly to the person, but acknowledge by bowing their heads or some eerie nod that demonstrates that they understand the commands.

It makes sense, Rigdoctorbri. I guess they can communicate through feelings. I just thought that there was a language associated with their sounds and I figured that Fudge could speak it. Did you ever wonder how Dementors can actually run a prison? Can you picture them preparing food for the prisoners?

They may be the guards, but I don't think they are the only ones running things. Since LV's return, they have abandoned their posts, others are doing the guarding. I am quite sure that they only keep the prisoners in line, and don't do laundry.

Did you ever wonder how many prisoners are held in Azkaban? Besides the Death Eaters ( who fled) and poor Stan Shunpike, who else is there?

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

I imagine quite a few. Clearly, there are many shady characters in the Wizard World, who live on the fringes of the law (e.g. Mundungus). There are various reasons one can get in, and apparently only two ways out; death or pardon.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

Perhaps it's sort of like mentally speaking to them. Perhaps, Dementor's can actually talk, but through the mind and that's their only way of communication. I don't think that they run Azkaban, since there has to be some sort of Warden there. perhaps Fudge, at the time, was with the Warden, or whoever is actually in charge of the prison, with Dementor's in comany. Just a thought.

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

Yes, I was wondering whether there were any elves running the place as well; cooking and cleaning. Anyway, how do you suppose the Ministry kept the Dementors under their control? Now that they have joined Voldemort, how can they be brought under control again?

Re: What language do the Dementors speak?

The dementors can be fought, and enough wizards could overpower them, even en masse. They were working for LV until he fell because he could offer them more widespread use of their abilities. When he left town, the dementors got a great job at the prison where they could pull every happy thought out of everyone in the joint, and occasionally suck a soul or two. Now that LV is back in business, they are checking out of the Motel 6 and moving into the Hotel Volde...

Volde speaks their language, and their language is discord.

I could see the dementors speaking English, but only if they spoke it in a very hissing sort of way. Among themselves, I think that they speak in hisses.

They don't speak. I think they just understand English.

I think they speak in sort of a hissing, slow English. They are variations of people, are they not? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Dementors understand English and other languages, just don't speak it. Like Owls.
