Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
I like both, but I know I love Harry Potter more... I think it might be because I can relate to HP characters more than LoTR characters.

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
Now if I liked Lord of the Rings better than Harry Potter would I really be on here right now?

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
well, the difference is that in Harry Potter you can relate to every character. And you can realte each person in your life with those characters, but in LOTR, simply you can't. So that's the big difference, I guess.

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
LOTR is much deeper and richer, but not nearly as relateable these days as HP is. 'The ring bearer has fulfilled his quest' brings tears (almost) to my eyes, while Harry killing Riddle makes me cheer (and almost cry too)
I find LOTR to be just as much a page-turner as HP, but it does get quite dry in places while HP really doesn't. I put LOTR <= HP <= Narnia for enjoyability reading, Narnia > LOTR > HP for depth/meaning and overall This is most likely based on reading Narnia as a kid, LOTR as a teen, and HP only recently. |

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
I would have to agree with previous statments and say that it is unfair to compare the two against one another. They are meant for very different audiences. Both authors did a wonderful job writing these sequels, yet they are very different from one another. Better to not be compared. The producers of the movies for the both of them were phenominal as well.
kudos to j.k. rowling and J.R.R.

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
Personally, I love them both. However, I can so not be bothered to read the books of Lord of the Rings. They are far too complex for my tiny little mind!
I have always wondered why people put them in the same catagory. As far as I can tell, they are two very different stories. Lord of the Rings is not a focused on magic, whereas Harry Potter is totally based on it. But if I had to chose, it would be Harry all the way! |

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
It's like the age old question; which came first, the chicken or the egg? In a sense, Lord of the Rings made books like Harry Potter possible. Lord of the Rings was the greatest hero quest of the modern literary world. You could say that most of what came after was a pale imitation. Most. I would think that Tolkien would rather have liked Harry Potter very much, as do I. Harry will always be one of my favorite heros, but my heart will forever rest in the land of the Valar.

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
HP definitly ! The beginning of LotR...Oh boy! XD 15 pages to describe a forest ! Okay , it's deeper but I got bored fast and when I arrived to the second part of first book...They didn't stop speaking and so I didn't understand things !...But I prefer LotR films to HPs ^^
Lady' : "Patient you must be... _Yes , Master !" Huh ? Does it exist ?! XD

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
Lord of the Rings, for me. While the book is confusing, and drags on a lot, it's such a good story. Forgive me for saying this, but sometimes Harry Potter feels recycled. One book has a similar formula to the next.
Okay, I couldn't read all of either, but I enjoyed the story in Lord of the Rings more. Also, look at the films. I felt LotR was more varied and those films had a greater impact on me. Mind you, the 5th Harry Potter film rocked! |

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
Harry Potter is easier to read the LOTR. I think that tolken wrote such long books because he wanted to finish them in three and not have any after the third. He wasn't going to write LOTR, but after the success of The Hobbit, the public demand was so great for him to write LOTR. Absolutely the movies for LOTR have been much better then the books, but they have stuck closer to the books then HP movies have. I have enjoyed both series, but HP is the one that I would read again, not LOTR, once is enough.

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
I read Lord of the Rings long before Harry Potter. Though I'm glad Harry Potter came around because if I was a "Ringer" the rest of my life I would cry.
Lord of the Rings is great and all. I love the world and the characters but Tokliens wirting style is...how do I put this? To informational? I mean the man spent more time discribing a tree then telling the actual story. I have no problem with the books but to read them is a task onto itself. I've only read the trilogy twice and couldnt get through it a third time. Though the Hobbit is the only thing I can find myself reading over and over again. As for Harry Potter...well Ive re read the series before every book release and each book twice ontop of that.(Except for COS, it's the worse book of the seven) The Potter books flow much better then Rings and isnt filled with every little bit of information, which I feel always takes away from the actual story. Movie wise...I'd have to go with neither. Lord of the Rings was great and all but I agree with Tolkien when he said it could never be made into a movie. Same goes for Potter. After the 3rd movie I just gave up all hope and dont even relate them to the books anymore. Though OOTP was amaztastical! Harry Potter > Lord of the Rings |

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
I like them both. They have simliar characters (Gandalf and Dumbledore) and both heroes need to destory something. After reading DH, I still say they are equal on the reading scale.

Re: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
Never seen any of the LOTR movies but I must say my dad and brother went to see the very one "Fellowship of the Ring" and couldn't stop ranting about it. So I decided to see what the big deal was about the movie, and I heard it was based of a book some author wrote and headed off to the nearest library and rented a copy of it. Anyways, the point is after I read a few hours worth of the book, I didn't like. It's not my kind of book.
Now as for Harry Potter, I don't even need to choose. First time I read The Philosopher's Stone, I was hooked and since then I've been a faithful fan who loves to read a new book each time it cames out and am eager to see what adventure awaits The Trio. As for seeing the Harry Potter movies, they're the best. I mean each time I read any of the six books(I'm just not ready to read Deadly Hallows), as any of you might just do, I imagine in my mind what that particular part that I've just read might look like. Well, in the movies you can actually see the part being acted out . Plus I ltruly think that the actors and actresses in each of the 5 movies, are porttraying their characters very well. |
