Do the last words in each book have importance?

I thought the last words in each book might have some importance. Why else would JKR decide to tell us the last word was scar? Maybe they make a message or summarize the book or maybe show the plot line. What does everyone else think?

hello. ooh, first post. But yes, I was thinking this too. Not sure what message it could be though. Bit of a random assortment of words going on! heh.

I think she told us that the last word would probably be scar, because it is just cool. It all depends on the last sentence, if the last word has meaning. I think Book 7's last sentence will be great.

Re: Do the last words in each book have importance?

Well JK Rowling herself has said that the last word might change..."scar" is given to us by her because that's how she'd like to end it and it gives us, the fans, many more hours of speculating. It is an important word, but I don't think she's trying to give us some type of "secret message" or anything like that.

Do we know what the last words are in each book so we can analyse this?

Re: Do the last words in each book have importance?

The last words are:

Book 1: summer
Book 2: world
Book 3: last
Book 4: did
Book 5: wake
Book 6: Hermione
Book 7: scar?

From these, I do not think there is any "secret message" that has been hidden.

Thanks hpcraig and sticky for looking that up

Lemme just try something here: During the SUMMER Harry saves the WORLD by destroying the LAST horcrux which is in Voldemort, who he DID in, leaving Harry in St. Mungo's. When he is aWAKE HERMIONEsays to him," Harry! You're SCAR is gone!"

How's that? I think I just decoded the key to the Harry Potter series!

It's goot but i don't think there is any real significance in the last words, I'm sure JK wouldn't be sure what the last word wouldbe in every book when she first started the series.

I honestly don't believe that they have any significance as I have stated above. Just trying to have some fun. You know, that's probably how Deathly Hallows is going to go anyways.

This is great! I don't think it will happen, but very creative use of the words. Haha.

I don't know how much significance the last word of each story has, but I'm sure she just told us it because she figured we might find it interesting.

I really don't think that's going to occur, because JK wouldn't plan out the series like that, but it really is an awesome "supposed" summary of the end of book 7.

'Sirius Black is sexy, right?' Of course she was right. The best-looking, most rebellious, most dangerous of the four marauders.

I love Harry Potter and Twilight. It can happen without a war.

yeah...i dont think it will happen. But while on the topic:

I remember when I got GoF. There had been a lot of rumors about a major character dieing...I remember the first thing I did when I got the book was flip to the back and check out hte lat sentence and it made me think that Hagrid was the one that would die. i mean, since it was about a statment made by Hagrid.

Re: Do the last words in each book have importance?

I was thinking about this too, because I noticed when I finished book six that the last words were "Ron and Hermione". I thought it might be foreshadowing, and since a little beforehand they mentioned Bill and Fleur's wedding, I concluded that there was a high chance they would confess their feelings for each other around the time of the wedding. Then a while later I come online and JKR herself had confirmed that "it is Ron and Hermione".

Re: Do the last words in each book have importance?

I really don't think that the last words have anything to do with what is happening in the series. But I do think JK wrote the ending to the book so that scar would be the last word. It's too much of a coincidence.

I think that RAB is not a name, but a secret group opposed to Voldemort. Kind of like the Order of the Phoenix. If RAB is a group they would have to have a spy closed to Voldemort. Snape maybe?

I've thought about this before, and also tried first words, and also a combo of both...but didn't get anything too ...meaningful.

Re: Do the last words in each book have importance?

Book 1: summer
Book 2: world
Book 3: last
Book 4: did
Book 5: wake
Book 6: Hermione
Book 7: scar?

Let us rearrange these just as they are: Did Hermione wake last summer world scar?

I have seen the word SCAR noted as both simply S-C-A-R and S-C-A-R-? If we take these and transpose them to a sentence, with "scar?" at the end, above we get what I wrote above. Now, if we just add a few minor words to make it a complete sentence we get the following message:

Did Hermione wake last summer in a world with no scar?

Take the "?" away, and change the order and we can get something like this:

Hermione did wake last summer in a world without a scar.

What might prove important here is what the last word is in the translated versions of the books. If they all translate exactly to the above, then we might be able to make an inference about a hidden meaning. Many languages do not follow the same grammatical pattern as English, in fact most don't. They kind of sound like you are talking to Yoda. "Yes. Lost a planet he has."
