The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
This thread is to discuss all aspects of Stephen Fry, whether you are a fan of him reading the Harry Potter books, his own books, his TV appearances, or just him in general. Some facts about Stephen Fry will follow:
STEPHEN FRY Born: 24th August 1957 Eyes: Blue Hair: Brown Height: 6’4" (198 cm) (God he's tall!) My favourite programme with him is QI, closely followed by Jeeves and Wooster, where he plays Jeeves, a butler, based on the novels by PG Wodehouse Oh, and you can't forget Pocoyo, he does the voiceover for that lol And the voice of the book in the film version of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy |

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
I lurve Stephen Fry - his wit is ingenious and I was so happy to see Hugh Laurie acknowledge him and their long friendship at the American Emmy Awards last year.
Hubby got the QI book at Christmas and I still haven't gotten it off him ![]() oh and did I say having heard both his versions and the US versions of the Harry Potter audio series I prefer his!!!!!

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
Stephen Fry appeared on Whose Line Is It Anyway in England many years ago. They were playing a game where you can only speak a certain number of words at a time. The Scene was Romeo and Juliet. Stephen Fry could only speak in six word sentences. Juliet threatened to kill herself and he said "I'm going to count to six!" Which is six words itself of course. then he went "One, Two, Three," she took the potion, "Oh, My God". He's a comic genius. But he was going to write an episode of Doctor who and he hasn't done it yet. Absolute Power is Brilliant.

I've only seen him in a few roles: Jeeves and Wooster, his bit in Gosford Park, but they're absolutely genius. I love this guy!

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
Stephen Fry is fantastic i love watching Q.I, especially when the other contestants make fun of him and his upbringing, like when he said something about his prep school tailors and they all jumped on it with things like "Might I suggest a cummerbund for geography?"

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
Hehe Stephen Fry and Alan Davies are like some sort of comedy duo!
Some QI quotes ![]() If ignorance is bliss, why aren't there more happy people in the world? Sean Lock: Banana plants, whatever they're called, walk. Stephen: [looking off-stage] Nurse, nurse, he's out of bed again. Welcome to QI, the show that rhymes with Stephen Fry. Alan Davies: I'm not as stupid as you think Stephen: No, you're not, you couldn't be Other Stephen Fry Quotes (may also have QI in them, I paste as I find) “An original idea. That can't be too hard. The library must be full of them.” “It is a cliche that most cliches are true, but then like most cliches, that cliche is untrue” “I think animal testing is cruel. They get nervous and get all the answers wrong." As someone who worked hard for a Labour victory in the 90s, do I regret it? Not really. It was bound to happen. And it'll happen with the next government, and the one after it. Because all governments serve us. They serve the filth. (topical for today )I don't watch television, I think it destroys the art of talking about oneself. Moving from chair to chair, from coffee machine to coffee machine is the limit of my action in most films. But I enjoy being cast in them because I love watching them. There's a piano in my house, and I play when no one's around - but as soon as anyone listens, my confidence goes and I lose my sense of rhythm. You can't reason yourself back into cheerfulness any more than you can reason yourself into an extra six inches in height. We’ve all met people who are supposedly incredibly intelligent but don’t know which way to sit on a lavatory. "A cousin of mine who was a casualty surgeon in Manhattan tells me that he and his colleagues had a one-word nickname for bikers: Donors. Rather chilling." ![]() |

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
I lurve that last one and often paraphrase it... I remember he told a story about (I believe) his auntie who was in hospital for cornea transplant and they had run out... the surgeon looked out the window and said ah its raining so we should have one in a few hours. (sorry I know I am paraphrasing but it is such a poignant anecdote about motorcyclists in the rain)

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
I loved his interview with JKR where after a few introductory remarks he said something along the lines of "And now to the important issue. Me" and talked about his reading of the books

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
But that is the thing. He pretends to be full of himself but really isn't
My Favourite Quote Ever: "A bear doesn't go to sleep thinking 'I wasn't really a very good bear today.' They are just 100% bear, whereas human beings feel we're not 100% human, that we're always letting ourselves down. We're constantly striving towards something, to some fulfilment" It basically sums up everybody's everyday lives |

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
I love Stephen Fry in "Blackadder". Since I live in the US, that's the only thing I've really seen him in. Of course, everyone on that show is brilliant.

As Lord Snot in The Young Ones he looks just like our Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
I saw his episode of Who Do You Think You Are? yesterday, and cried my eyes out. Members of his family died in concentration camps during the second world war, and watching his reaction as he read it in the documents was just heartbreaking

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
He's excellent. I adore absolutely everything he does. As a matter of fact, we're watching QI right now
![]() He even appeared in some episodes of Bones a few weeks back. He's the sole reason I started watching that show.

Re: The Stephen Fry Appreciation Thread!
I believe Stephen Fry's first TV appearance was as a contestant on University Challenge representing Cambridge. They did a celebrity version a few years back where other former contestants who had gone on to become famous competed. Stephen probably answered more questions than the rest of them put together and his team won by miles! He is a very knowledgable and well-educated man blessed with a sharp wit. He also suffers from manic depression and was brave enough to present a series about this condition recently.
Personally, I wished they'd cast Stephen Fry as Dumbledore after Richard Harris passed away. He was excellent as the headmaster in a recent adaption of Tom Brown's Schooldays, he clearly has great affection for the books, he's got the height and he's even got the crooked nose! Pop a long silver wig and beard on him plus a pair of half-moon specs, add a few wrinkles and Bob's your uncle. ![]() As far as his comic attributes go, if you get the chance to catch an old episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway featuring Stephen when they had to do a rap then take it. He's hilarious! He doesn't so much rap as ramble, throwing in only the odd line that rhymes. And for the Blackadder fans amongst I leave you with this gem from Stephen's alter ego Lord Melchett after he's had a few drinks too many: "You twist and turn like a...twisty turny thing. You're a weedy pigeon, Blackadder, and you can call me Susan if it isn't so!" ![]()
