No! They would be really ruining the books if the movies were animated! I love other movies animated, like the Disney movies, but Harry Potter animated would not be good. I actually did have a dream not to long ago that when the Half-Blood prince Trailer came out it was animated. It was scary.

No Way They Are Way Better In Live Action Format , If Animated It Would Look Stupid And Silly

No way! I'm not a huge fan of animated stuff, un less you count Disney. If the movies were animated I think that people wouldn't take it that seriously and it would be silly. And it would also make it seem somewhat childish. Making the movies with real people in a live action format is much better, imo.

It'd be next to impossible to do a good love scene (Harry/Ginny) and an emotional scene (Amos crying over Cedric/Dd's funeral) not to mention that Voldemort wouldn't nearly have the same evil effect. Even if you used final fantasy type animation.
I completely agree! It would not be good and it would not have the same effect as it would in live action.

J.K. Rowling: No, the Patronus often mutates to take the image of the love of one's life (because they so often become the 'happy thought' that generates a Patronus).

I don't think the films would have been better if they were animated. My opinion is that they would have been worse..

i mean theres advantages and disadvanteges of each and they could be done very very bad and they could be pretty good i mean it would make people think they are even more for kids(i mean my friends shouted me down so bad for even mentioning the animated star wars) but it could be kinda cool(i guess im just that dorky)(even if i dont look it )

No, certain series belong animated such as if Halo the Video Game would get a movie it should be CGI. However, Harry Potter can't properly get some things across through animation, and it would just be silly.

They wouldn't be better, but I do think they might be able to fit more in and there would not have been as many time constraints. Plus we might have already had the DH movies if they were.

yes..and it would've made the expectation for the HP movies less thrilling and exciting..and we wouldn't have three movies, which are all we got left, to anticipate for in the coming years..

They would probably be better quality because it would help to eliminate some bad acting, and you can pretty much do whatever you want with animation. But, I personally would rather see a realistic portrayal.

I'm not getting why so many people are stuck on a Disney style of animation instead of a more Final Fantasy style CGI. That would look amazing and eliminate so many issues including special effects.

What can't they get across?

Re: Do you think the movies would have been better if they were animated?

No, no, no - nothing is better than the real deal there is no substitute - just as an example Star Wars has a new animation film about to come out and just from seeing the trailers it looks a little lame especially compared to the six movies.

It just hit me how ironic it is that I am saying real people are the best to act out a fictional story...lol

No... I don't mind animated movies, but Harry Potter being animated would make it seem more... childish. I like the way they've been making the movies.

Agreed. I think if they would have made them animated the target audience would have been completely different. My parents love to watch the movies although they have never read the books, they still get excited for the next one to come out. If they were animated I doubt they would have had the same interest. So the WB could have lost a huge group of people that they have now if they would have animated them.

I like them the way they are much better.

I agree too. Part of the reason that the Harry Potter books were so successful is that they didn't just appeal to younger kids, lots of adults read them. If the movies were animated, people would think they were just for younger kids because that's just the thought process that goes along with most animated movies. If it was animated it would have been hard to keep up the dark tone that the later books have. And I just wouldn't have liked to see animated HP movies as much because, well... I couldn't see them being as good as they are.

I dare say some people aren't just stuck on Disney style, but rather on a Nickelodeon style. No offense, people, but all animation isn't like Spongebob, there is some quality stuff out there aimed at adults, and I don't just mean CGI.

The topic title is kind of misleading though. I don't think animated movies would have been better, but nice.

Do I think the films would have been better animated? No.

Once the films are done, could the potterverse benifit from an animated suppliment? I think so. Look at the new Spider-man series. Seperate from the films, yet tells the same story (with more detail).

Most people think of nickekodeon or crappy saturday morning. People are stuck on styles that, in my opinion, suck. I'm truly sick of just about every "animated" movie is CGI.

What makes a cartoon look good is the charactor design... back to my example of the Spectacular Spider-man. Sean "Cheeks" Galloway did an excellent job with the design. now, it may be a bit too exaggerated for some, but it does capture Spider-man well. Do I like a cartoon more than the films? in this case, yes.

I have thought about a HP animated series before and always thought that the Makani should do the character design... but that just my opinion.

I love Makani's style. Also Hito76's.

I share a bit of your disdain for the reliance on CGI but there is very little if any work down in the traditional style done nowadays that calls forth the kind of realism that you get from the non-kiddie CGI.

The star wars designs are crappy yes, it was on adult swim but there a definite laziness to the character design, especially considering the ubject matter.

As for the Harry Potter series appealing all ages, they're being pushed as family films which is essentially a kids movie with enough "older" content to keep adults who haven't read the books from completely shutting off.

Re: Do you think the movies would have been better if they were animated?

Harry Potter is not the kinda book to have an animated movie.
While reading the book, you imagine real people and you make your own "movie" in your head.
I think an animated film would ruin it.

Re: Do you think the movies would have been better if they were animated?

I agree with most of the posters, though, that the movies would have done poorer income-wise, because, well, it's animated. Most people would be prejudiced and think it's a kids movie, and be slightly embarrassed when going to the cinema without a child (hell, I think some people already ARE embarrassed about seeing HP movies because it's HP, and yet it's live action).

Hey, I am sort of getting sick of CGI being everywhere. It's not that I don't like it (though if given a choice, my mind always visualises stuff in 2D animation), but I think it really discredits traditional animation. Now every big animated movie is CGI, and traditional animation is left to Saturday morning cartoons. Zero credibility in the average public's mind.
Sorry about the small rant, I have two friends who intend to work in 2D animation _ I used to, but I changed my mind _ and they share my opinion about animation not being taken seriously anymore.

Whatever, when I read the books, I still picture everything animated.

I agree, though Hito's style is a little too manga for my tastes, I'm kind of getting sick of seeing manga everywhere. Like CGI. Don't get me started on manga-ish CGI. I'm looking at you, Advent Children _ it sure was pretty, but the characters just looked too weird in my opinion.

Re: Do you think the movies would have been better if they were animated?

I liked the live action for this time around but I really think that an animated series would be a great idea after we have finished the current run. The moves are marketed as children's movies as it is, and animated movies have really come along way in appealing to adults too (I think Shrek and Wall-E). It would definitely be interesting to see at least the first book in animation just to see how it would be adapted. More detail could be included which is always a good thing
