Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

Honestly, I felt the Tonks' death was the most unnecessary in the novel. I saw the reasoning for each of the other mid major characters to die, but her death just really seems to serve little purpose. Even as a comparison to Harry, having little Teddy Lupin growing up w/o his parents doesn't equate because he still has Andromeda, Harry, and eventually Ginny. I think the point could have been made w/o killing Tonks.

I imagine that she was one of the two who got killed off when presumably Hagrid got the reprieve.

I think the death of both of them was overall a good touch, now ted banks will grow up to become the new harry potter (orphan)

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

I'm glad that at least Tonks and Remus got to go together. I think it was necessary that some major characters had to die in the final battle. It gives Harry a compelling reason to face death and stop Voldemort. We all knew a lot of characters were going to die. I think she was a logical choice, as well as Remus. First, he's Harry's last connection to the Mauraders and now that's severed. Tonks was a much-loved, but overall non-integral character.

I kind of tear up at the thought of Tonks rushing out into battle to find Lupin, perhaps finding him dead and then exploding in grief and getting killed herself. Or perhaps they fought side-by-side, like Harry and Sirius in the OotP movie, and died together. I'm glad it wasn't detailed precisely, because the reader gets to fill in with their own version of events.

That and it kind of emphasizes the whole orphan thing JKR has going on. Continued into the next generation sorta, only with an obvious happy ending.

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

It was entirely unneeded. It would have been so much better if only Lupin had died and Tonks raised Ted, though sadly, alone. The same effect would have been generated.

In the most literal sense of the prase, overkill.

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

I just though it'd be nice if we can see a lot more of her. All I remember of the scene that she we directly in were that she showed up, look for Lupin, asked DD's brother (can't remember the name on the top of my head), and the next thing we know, she's lying dead next to Lupin. It'd be nice if we can read the survivors recounting how bravely those who died fought the DEs.

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

I think it was a bit unnecessary. I mean really Teddy is now the orphan child on their side. There is always an orphan. He does have his grandmother and Harry but Tonks just dying and without us knowing how she and Remus died is kind of unsatisfying. I mean major character had to die but still I would of liked a bit more.

I quite liked the lack of time given to the deaths. It made it feel more like a real battle, not everyone in war has a 'glorious' Sirius esque death witnessed by everyone etc, made sense and added realism.

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

I posted this is Lupin Death thread and thought It need to be posted here as well.
One of the main things I wanted to see in this book was Lupin amd Tonks getting married and NOT dying. I cried so much. I tried to not believe, especially the way we found out, just so mater of factly. Leaving a son behind. That is so hard for me since I have a son. I could not imagine leaving him behind.

It was indeed unnecessary- and it hurt. I felt sadness but even more indignation. Tonks Death was reeeally a way too much.

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

I was pretty traumatised by it! It seemed so out of the blue. But the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. They died in a battle that, if victorious, would've secured a safe magical future for Teddy. What a sacrifice, much like James and Lily. And as someone mentioned, not all deaths in war are as glorious as Sirius'.

It was needless and painful. Lupin and Tonks deserved better.

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

It frustrated me because I felt it would have been more her duty to stay with and protect the baby when he was so young. When she came to Hogwarts, all she wanted to know was where Lupin was, not where could she help the most.

Of course, on the other hand, I can also understand she might feel like helping to stop Voldemort was the best and only way to protect the baby, but still, it frustrated me.

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

I'm torn about this death, honestly. Tonks was so utterly sad and messed up in HBP when Lupin rejected her, I'm half happy for her to be able to die with Remus, because I'm not sure that Tonks could have gone on without Remus. Also, she was an auror--it makes sense that she would have been in the thick of the fight, and therefore have a high risk of getting killed. On the other hand, could she have found enough happiness and joy with Teddy to give her the strength to go on? Could she have lived for her son? I like to think so.

Actually, the one I feel most sorry for in this family is Andromeda--she lost a husband, a daughter, a son-in-law, and a sister (even if she fought against Bellatrix's side, it still had to grieve her in some small portion that her insane freaky sister couldn't be saved from the evil that consumed her).

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

Even though ive forbid myself to think that remus and tonks are dead because it makes me so sad and i feel sick every time i do, I think it was needed to show how pointless and uneccessary killing them and other innocent people was. In a real war, as we well know from the land of non-fiction, innocent people with newly-married wives/husbands and week-old-sons die just as quickly and shockingly as remus and tonks. That, i think is one of the sickening messages JK wants to put through.
It makes me so sad just thinking about them both lieing there on one of the house tables in the great hall, next to eachother, looking 'as though they were sleeping'. sob!!!

Not what i wanted to happen, but the more i think about it, it makes the plot more realistic.

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

Tonks death was senseless. It almost seems like she died just because. No better reason, just because. It would have made more sense if JKR had atleast shown Tonks and Lupin fighting side by side.

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

She always kills the Hufflepuffs. It just seemed as if JKR needed to hype up the death count, not even giving them mention at their deaths. Wormtail's death was give at least a paragraph, we glide by Remus' and Tonks'

Re: Discussion: Nymphadora Tonks's Death

I do rather echo the sentiment that it was a needless death - especially since she was given the choice to stay with her child, and because her death seemed to be merely an extension of Remus. I don't think she would have died if Remus had lived.

Tonks has never been a favourite of mine, but it seemed even more pathetic that she had to die when the Resurrection Stone shows us Remus, after death, with James, Sirius, and Lily - and Tonks gets no mention. Since JKR decided to make Lupin consider abandoning Tonks and Teddy, I think it would have made a more powerful impact had his contemplations foreshadowed what was coming in the future, and after having decided to stick with his family, he died and left Tonks a widow anyway. It would have been dolorous but at least not so unceremonious. When Tonks dies too it seems like a tragic afterthought.
