Re: Foul Language in DH

I only say two swear words which considering the situation I acctually thought were very well placed and encouraged the characters to kick some desrving death eater a**.

One was when Mrs. Weasley said to Bellatrix "Stay away from my daughter, you B****!!"
and when Neville said to Voldemort's asked to join him.
"yeah sure when H*** freezes over."

Re: Foul Language in DH

I think it was acceptable and they were all used in ways that were acceptable...I mean they were used in ways that they would be used normally.

Merlin's Pants made me laugh though

And "what in the name of Merlin's saggy left..." was funny too

Neville wasn't swearing when he said that, he was using H*ll as a place name...

And it's not considered a swearword in the UK.

Re: Foul Language in DH

I know...I really don't understand why it is a swear word in other places, except if it's seen as blasphemous. He was just using it as the place name, not a swear word

Re: Foul Language in DH

i actually would of liked a bit more profanity in the books.

after all, teenage kids under a lot of stress would be much more likely to let an f word or 2 slip then take the time to say o sugar plums.

could of been interesting to include the stronger words in the adult edition of the books, and give them somthing other than the artwork to differenciate between child and adult versions. also the adult version could contain much more sexual tension between the now much older and understanding teens

off the top of my head there were only 2 strong references.

once b word for some 1 who is fatherless b******d
the female dog b word b****

all others were "and ron cursed under his breath" type references

Re: Foul Language in DH

I don't think so with the adult and children's versions, because it would mean a lot more work for the publishers...and I do think that it is good that the books are exactly the same, it's just the cover that is different

H'ear', h'ear'! I think it's largely a cultural thing, getting shocked by swearing. It didn't feel gratuitious, which is when swearing annoys me- it's just the way I'd expect teenagers to talk, and it's much like how I once talked, so it's easy to relate to really.

Y'know... everyone talks about Molly's line, which was great, but I still liked Ron's better...

(To paraphrase)
"And that's the second time we've saved your life you two-faced *******!" , right after hittin' Draco.

Re: Foul Language in DH

I wouldn't exactly call it foul; that seems a little over the top. I think the swearing used in the book didn't detract from the story in any way whatsoever. When it was used, it was to emphasize the point and make the book that much better. Really, the swearing was minimal in comparison to many other things you might see or read.

I thought the swearing in the book was fitting, the kids are older, times are darker, therefore their mouths are fouler.
thats exactly what i thought.

Frankly, I think it's pretty awesome of Jo to be able to limit the amount of swearing and to mention/reference it so tastefully - if I were writing these books I'd have just thrown a bunch of curse words in there, but it's certainly better writing to reference them. Not to mention I think it makes it a bit cleaner for children and gives an added layer of meaning for teenagers and adults.

I thought Mrs.Weasley have full right in saying what she said, and the boy's. The swearing made it more real. Nice one J.K

Re: Foul Language in DH

The only thing I found shocking about the swearing was who said it. I couldn't believe Mrs. Weasley called Bellatrix a b****, but I thought it was appropriate. What mother wouldn't be screaming things like that to the person who murdered her son? I actually smiled and cheered her on!

And Ron's line when he punched Draco was classic. I loved it, but not as much as Mrs. Weasley's!

Just like the (more or less) same line in Aliens.

Substitute Molly for Ripley, Ginny for Newt and Bellatrix for the Alien Queen.

Hehe, I'm so glad I wasn't the only one with that image. So perfect.

I didn't even notice the swearing until I saw B*TCH in capital letters, and I thought about it and realized the language had been a little more mature. It just fit in so neatly that I didn't notice it; it's about time that they could say what they meant. And the little innuendos throughout the book had me laughing. :P

Really, the only person who's going to complain about it is Laura Mallory.....oh wait.....she doesn't read the books. Nevermind, carry on. :P

Re: Foul Language in DH

I hate it when people are so offended over swearing.

I thought there was very little cursing and it was appropriate where there was cursing.

Mrs. Weasley's line is unforgetable, hilarious, and brilliant. I love Jk!

Re: Foul Language in DH

My honest oppinion is that there should have been swearing throught all the books. NOT ALOT. but some. I meen growing up when you were 11 didnt it slip sometimes? I always thought ron would slip a couple times. When Mrs. Weasley called bella a B**** i started laughing and I actually said kinda loudly "Go Mrs. Weasley."

All the swearing fit into the book. It all helped get the point across. That it was really a difficult time for all of them.

Re: Foul Language in DH

I wasn't affected at all by the swearing: I just glanced right over it, but of course, as mentioned countless times before, I definitely agree that Molly's expletive in her line at Bellatrix was unforgettable.

"NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU B****!"...classic! I too cheered Molly when she shouted that at Bellatrix. If they don't have Julie Walters do that in Movie 7, I'll be so disappointed.

Re: Foul Language in DH

I agree with most people on here: it makes sense, they are seventeen years old, and they swear in situations like those. It almost wouldn't make sense if they didn't. Besides, they are under a lot of stress, and in a war situation. I think most people would swear in those places. Molly's line, too, was somewhat necessary to get the point across, and these aren't books for five year olds, anymore. Most people are use to it, and it wasn't really bad, in those places, anyways.

Re: Foul Language in DH

I don't mind the swearing, it all makes it more realistic to have it put down exactly who said what. Although, I also found it hilarious in earlier books when ron would be descirbed as 'saying something he'd never dare say in front of Mrs Weasley.' So funny.
More to the point I think, the films have been saying words like 'bloody' since PS.
