I also thought of two more songs that seem to fit with the book. Both are by the Bouncing Souls.

Simple Man
Anchors Away

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

I found an almost perfect one for Severus Snape.

Picture this song being sung about Snape, protecting his identity from his friends. He wishes he could have told the Order that he was with them, but he just couldn't. All his friends think he's gone, but he's not. He feels like he won't get out alive and nothing will ever be the same. Then he says how he'll act the part well and he won't let anyone see how he's acting.

It's perfect because all this time, Dumbledore was the only one who knew Snape was loyal to the Order. He couldn't tell the rest of the Order because that would ruin their plans.

"Say This Sooner" by The Almost
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-feOdmmdFw8

Woah Oh Oh!
Woah Oh Oh Oh!
I can't believe I didn't say this sooner
I'll just believe that I was all displaced
I'll get to speaking, let you know how I feel
I'll get to judging, make you see my appeal
(Oh Oh Oh Oh!)

No one will ever see things the way I do
No one will try
All my friends think that I'm gone
But I swear, I swear I'm not...
(I swear, I swear I'm not. I swear...)

This makes me feel that I'll never be quite normal
This makes me act like I'll never get out alive (alive)
I'll get to acting, make you all believe me
I'll get to faking, show you all how to grieve
(Oh Oh Oh!)

No one will ever see things the way I do
No one will try
All my friends think that I'm gone
But I swear, I swear I'm not
I swear I'm not

In and out is where it gets back to the place it does
Make me feel like I just wanna be...
Just like its touch...

No one will ever see things the way I do
No one will try
All your friends say that you're gone
But you swear, I swear I'm not

No one will ever see things the way I do
No one will try
All my friends think that I'm gone
But I swear, I swear I'm not
I swear I'm not

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

Memories by Within Temptation. After all the sorrow and deaths in this book, this one will make you cry.

[Whisper] Memories, memories, memories
In this world you tried
Not leaving me alone behind
There's no other way
I'll pray to the gods let him stay
The memories ease the pain inside,
Now I know why

All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments
Imagine you'd be here.
All of my memories keep you near,
Your silent whispers, silent tears

Made me promise I'd try
To find my way back in this life
I hope there is a way
To give me a sign you're okay
Reminds me again it's worth it all
So I can go home

All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments
Imagine you'd be here
All of my memories keep you near
Your silent whispers, silent tears

Together in all these memories
I see your smile
All of the memories I hold dear
Darling, you know I'll love you
till the end of time

All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments,
Imagine you'd be here
All of my memories keep you near,
Your silent whispers, silent tears

All of my memories...

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

Ooh, there are alot of songs here - some I haven't heard, but I am eager to look them up =)

When Harry was walking to his death and he asked "Does it hurt?" I had to get up and walk around 'cause it totally broke down my defenses. So I go and put my zune on shuffle and what's the first song to play? "It Ends Tonight" by the All-American Rejects. I almost threw it

But yeah, even after I stopped it, the song was in my mind as I imagined Harry walking on to face Voldemort.

It Ends Tonight - The All-American Rejects

Your subtleties
They strangle me
I canít explain myself at all
And all the wants
And all the needs
All I donít want to need at all

(I imagine this as Harry's thoughts after hearing what needs to be done)

The walls start breathing
My minds unweaving
Maybe itís best you leave me alone
A weight is lifted
On this evening
I give the final blow

(Harry walking past Ginny and the others, refusing to say anything)

When darkness turns to light,
It ends tonight,
It ends tonight

(Harry's thoughts; This is when the hour is up, and what will happen, at dawn)

A falling star
Least I fall alone (reference to Harry going in there alone)
I canít explain what you canít explain
You're finding things that you didnít know
I look at you with such disdain

The walls start breathing
My minds unweaving
Maybe itís best you leave me alone
A weight is lifted
On this evening
I give the final blow

[Chorus]
When darkness turns to light
It ends tonight,
It ends tonight
Just a little insight won't make this right
Itís too late to fight
It ends tonight,
It ends tonight

(Harry's thoughts again; This is when the hour is up, and what will happen, at dawn)

Now Iím on my own side
Itís better than being on your side
Itís my fault when you're blind
It's better that I see it through your eyes

All these thoughts locked inside
Now youíre the first to know

When darkness turns to light
It ends tonight,
It ends tonight...
Just a little insight won't make this right
Itís too late to fight....It ends tonight

It ends when darkness turns to light
It ends tonight,
It ends tonight
Just a little insight won't make this right
Itís too late to fight
It ends tonight,

It ends tonight...
Tonight...
When darkness turns to light...
It ends tonight

~*~

Also Dido's "White Flag" really reminds me of Snape. I had only heard this on the radio a few weeks before, but I'm glad I went and looked it up and bought it, because I think it really fits Snape.

White Flag - Dido

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you,
Or tell you that.
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
where's the sense in that?

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were

(I imagine him saying this to Lily in death)

But I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

(Summing up Snape's mission - After he decided he wouldn't die but help protect Lily's son for her, and just never stop loving her)

I know I left too much mess and
destruction to come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "it's over"
then I'm sure that that makes sense

(His realizations after the events in SWM, and when he tried to confront her that night )

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on....

(The first time he sees her with James as his girlfriend - it burning inside of him, but he walks past like its nothing)

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

When I think of a song that fits Harry, I usually think of Blvd of Broken Dreams by Green Day, or Once In Every Lifetime by JEM.
For Ron and Hermione, I think Before It's Too Late by the Goo Goo Dolls fits pretty well, especially for when they embrace durring the battle.
And I can't really think of a song for Harry in "The Forest Again" (at least not one that I've heard) except for maybe the song "Gravity" from Wolf's Rain.

Little Wonders by Rob Thomas. I hear it and I can see Harry every time someone stands up for him or supports him and while he is battling LV at the end. Makes me cry every time I hear the song now.

Pins and Needles by Billy Talent
I don't know that Snape was walking on Pins and Needles around Lily. Maybe he was. He loved her so he wasn't trying to make her mad. But he was also trying to impress his death eater friends. So I guess whatever he did to step over the line with her, whether it was calling her a Mudblood or something else, she didn't forgive him.

Surrender by Billy Talent
This one reminds me of when Snape is trying to appologize to Lily and is threatening to sleep outside of the Portrait of the Fat Lady. She comes out and but she will not listen to him. He knows she is inside, but there is literally a brick wall between them now.
Yes! Definitely, I love both of those songs and I think you hit it on the mark right here.

Following your Billy Talent trend here, I think Red Flag is really good for the collective idea that the kids are fighting back when the adults can't seem to help, "The Kids of Tomorrow don't need today when they live in the sins of Yesterday." Sort of like the way that their education has been seconded to fighting.

Quote:
Cast off the crutch that kills the pain,
The red flag wavin' never meant the same,
the kids of tomorrow don't need today,
When they live in the sins of yesterday.

Well I've never seen us act like this,
our only hope is of minds of kids,
and they'll show us a thing or two.

Our only weapons are the guns of youth,
It's only time before they take the nukes,
and then the hunt will be on for you.

the red flag wavin never ment the same (no)
the red flag wavin never ment the same

(Chorus x2)
Cast off the crutch that kills the pain,
the red flag wavin' never meant the same,
the kids of tomorrow don't need today,
when they live in the sins of yesterday.

Like the smallest bee packs a sting,
like a punch that makes a king,
we'll attack at the crack o' dawn.

Build a ladder if there's a wall,
don't be afraid to slip and fall,
speak for yourself or they'll speak for you.

the red flag wavin never ment the same (no)
the red flag wavin never ment the same

(Chorus x2)
Cast off the crutch that kills the pain,
the red flag wavin never meant the same,
the kids of tomorrow don't need today,
when they live in the sins of yesterday.

(Music Break for 11 seconds)

Like a fire,
don't need water,
like a jury,
needs a liar,
like a riot,
don't need order,
like a madman,
needs a martyr.

We don't need them.(x8)

(Chorus x2)
Cast off the crutch that kills the pain,
the red flag wavin' never meant the same,
the kids of tomorrow don't need today,
when they live in the sins of yesterday.

(Chorus) with "We don't need them." (x8)

We don't need them
And River Below by Billy Talent has always been a Voldemort song for me "Don't think I'm insane, but you'll all know my name." Sort of an all encompassing Voldemort song

Quote:
Rejected...since day one
My name is...basstarrd son
I've been damned...so many times I've lost count
Blue collar...working man
Devises...master plan
Bi-polar...with a mental side arm

I'm sick and I'm twisted
I'm broken an' you can't fix it
Don't make me, cause I'll do it
Red button and we'll all go

Into the river below...I'm running from the inferno...
They'll think I'm insane, but you'll all know my name!
Into the river below...I'm running from the inferno...
I'll take all the blame, the front page and the fame!

Contraption...made up of
Nuts and bolts...creates the
New monster...to burn your family tree down!
Tick-tocking...times up now
Split second...the world frowns
Lonely heart...never loved nobody!

I'm sick and I'm twisted
I'm broken an' you can't fix it
Don't make me, cause I'll do it
Red button and we'll all go

Into the river below...I'm running from the inferno...
They'll think I'm insane but you'll all know my name!
Into the river below...I'm running from the inferno...
I'll take all the blame, the front page and the fame!

I'll take all the blame
The front page and the fame
INTO THE RIVER BELOW
INTO THE RIVER BELOW
INTO THE RIVER BELOW
INTO THE RIVER BELOW

Into the river below...I'm running from the inferno...
They'll think I'm insane but you'll all know my name!
Into the river below...I'm running from the inferno...
I'll take all the blame, the front page and the fame!

Yeah I'll take all the blame
The front page and the fame
But you'll all know my name
And they'll think I'm insane
But you'll all know my name
But they'll think I'm insane

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

Maybe it doesn't totally fit perfectly, but the song "Seven Years" by Saosin is interesting, almost as it's from Harry's point of view after finally vanquishing Voldemort, telling him what his mistake was, and he wants to be left alone. it could also be Harry talking about how angry he is at Dumbledore being so naive.

Taking on seven years the holy ghost had left alone
Test my arms, kick like crazy, I’ve been trying way too long.
Only push the way off to find you
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m not sure
Getting off my chest, the story ends.

I would find a way without
tell him his eyes see too clear
I would find a way without you
tell him his eyes see too clear

that mistake is gold and I know,
without you, is something that I could never do
That was why, staple the eyes and seven dates for me to
Sell machines and stare on

Seven years, you assured me that I’d be fine if I complied
only push the way off to fight you
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m not sure
Getting off my chest, the story ends.

I would find a way without
tell him his eyes see too clear
I would find a way without you
tell him his eyes see too clear

that mistake is gold and I know,
without you, is something that I could never do
That was why, stepped through the Cold and seven dates for me to
Sell machines and tear on

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

Well, I have to apologise for being very old, and I'm sure most of you will never have heard of the Moody Blues, but their lyrics to some of the tracks on 'To our Children's Children's Children' haunted me all the way through reading DH.

Something you can't hide
Says you're lonely
Hidden deep inside
Of you only
It's there for you to see
Take a look and be
Burn slowly the candle of life.

Something there outside
Says we're only
In the hands of time
Falling slowly
It's there for us to know
With love that we can go
Burn slowly the candle of life.

and then ...

the final verse of 'I never thought ...'

I never thought I'd get to be the thing
That all his other children see
... Look at me ...

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

"Heat of the Moment" by Asia reminds me of Ron and Hermione's kiss near the end of the book... haha. They just get so... caught up in the moment! And kiss!

It was the heat of the moment
Telling me what your heart meant
Heat of the moment shone in your eyes

I love it. It's a good 80s song. If you haven't heard, it, watch The 40-Year Old Virgin.

On a more serious note... the song "Cathedrals" by Jump Little Children reminds me of the book as a whole.... but especially when Harry is walking to his so-called death.

In the shadows of tall buildings
Of fallen angels on the ceilings
Oily feathers in bronze and concrete
Faded colors, pieces left incomplete
The line moves slowly past the electric fence
Across the borders between continents

In the cathedrals of New York and Rome
There is a feeling that you should just go home
And spend a lifetime finding out just where that is

In the shadows of tall buildings
The architecture is slowly peeling
Marble statues and glass dividers
Someone is watching all of the outsiders
The line moves slowly through the numbered gate
Past the mosaic of the head of state

In the cathedrals of New York and Rome
There is a feeling that you should just go home
And spend a lifetime finding out just where that is

In the shadows of tall buildings
Of open arches endlessly kneeling
Sonic landscapes echoing vistas
Someone is listening from a safe distance
The line moves slowly into a fading light
A final moment in the dead of the night

In the cathedrals of New York and Rome
There is a feeling that you should just go home
And spend a lifetime finding out just where that is

Not one hundred percent fitting, but Prayer of the Refugee by Rise Against kind of makes me think of the attitude everyone who fights against Voldemort has. I can stand my own ground, don't hold me down etc.

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

The Lord of the Rings soundtrack was stuck in my head a little bit towards the end of the book. It might be because my brother was watching the movies in the next room the whole weekend. I also had the Angels in America theme stuck in my head for a while (which is a very nice song, click here to listen).

Looking back now, I really like the way "What's Left of the Flag" by Flogging Molly goes with the book, even if it's not a perfect fit. Lyrics:

"His eyes they closed and his last breath spoke
he had seen all to be seen
A life once full, now an empty vase
Wilt the blossums on his early grave
Walk away me boy, walk away me boy
And by mornin' we'll be free
Wipe that golden tear from your mother dear
And raise what's left of the flag for me

Then the rosary beads count them one,
two, three
Fell apart as they hit the floor
In our garb of black we must pay respect
To the colour we're born to mourn
Walk away me boys, walk away me boys
And by morning we'll be free
Wipe that golden tear from your mother dear
And raise what's left of the flag for me

In his place there grew an angry festered wound
Filled with hatred and remorse
Where I'd pick and scratch till the blood it matched
The silent rage not that fills my lungs
For there are many ways to kill a man they say
With bayonet, axe, or sword
But son a bullet fired from a shapeless guise
Leaves but the shell of a Thompson gun

Walk away me boys, walk away me boys
And by morning we'll be free
Wipe that golden tear from your mother dear
And raise what's left of the flag for me

From the East out to the Western shore
Where many men and many more will fall
But no angel flies with me tonight
Till freedom reigns on all
And curse the name for which we slaved our days
Till every man shall his kingdom come
But sure as night turns day
Ends the passion play
Oh my god what have they done
With madman's rage, well they dug our graves
But the dead rise again you fools

Walk away me boys, walk away me boys
And by morning we'll be free
Wipe that golden tear from your mother dear
And raise what's left of the flag for me

Walk away me boys, walk away me boys
And by morning we'll be free
Wipe that golden tear from your mother dear
And raise what's left of the flag for me"

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

I think "Hurt" is ingenious for "the princes tale" but I prefer the Johnny Cash version, its slower and seems more like the recollection of a sad life.

I was thinking, and I also think that planet caravan, by pantera, (originally by black sabbath) would be good for when he marches to his death. Because it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and I don't think anyone's head would be on strait if they knew they were about to die.

WE SAIL THROUGH ENDLESS SKIES
STARS SHINE LIKE EYES
THE BLACK NIGHT SIGHS
THE MOON IN SILVER TREES
FALLS DOWN IN TEARS
LIGHT OF THE NIGHT
THE EARTH, A PURPLE BLAZE
OF SAPPHIRE HAZE
IN ORBIT ALWAYS

WHILE DOWN BELOW THE TREES
BATHED IN COOL BREEZE
SILVER STARLIGHT BREAKS DOWN THE NIGHT
AND SO WE PASS ON BY THE CRIMSON EYE
OF GREAT GOD MARS
AS WE TRAVEL THE UNIVERSE

Actually, "we" have, and "we" (=I) love this band . "Days of Future Passed", what an album! Lovely of you to bring the song up!

As for me - it's not quite the soundtrack to the DH, but while reading, I was jumping from Richard Wagner's "Gotterdammerung" to the soundtrack from "The Fountain" to Radiohead's "OK Computer". There was one song, however, that kept playing itself in my head during those 12 hours of non-stop reading: "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" by Counting Crows (http://youtube.com/watch?v=85McHO_9TwM). And a price of a memory is a memory of the sorrow it brings... somehow I couldn't throw these words off my head...

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

I've been checking out other people's song ideas, particularly for the Prince's Tale, because after nearly five days that part is just haunting me. Snape's tragic life and death keep circling in my head.

Anyway, I still like Metallica's Unforgiven for Snape, but I just went to youtube and listened to Johnny Cash's version of Hurt.

Wow - that song is so fitting. It made me cry. Again.

Re: Your Personal DH Soundtrack

With the whole Snape-Lily thing I really thought of "Fade to Black" by Metallica. After he loses her, that is.

When we find out about Dumbledore's past I thought of "Behind Blue Eyes"

"Master of Puppets" seems to sit well with Voldemort's character.

And "Welcome back Kotter" when Harry returns to Hogwarts. Okay...maybe I stole that from an SNL skit but I thought it was funny.
