That was really the most beautiful editorial I've read since DH came out. You pulled together everything I thought about the book and the end of the series. Well done. I can't wait to see more of your analysis.

"and even the loss of the Firebolt – which bothered my heart far more than it should have, given everything else that happened –"

Me, too. I remember reading that part and saying, "Wait, what about his broom?" and having to go back and read it again.

Lady Lupin, as always, you've done a wonderful job. I was so nervous as I proceeded through the book as well, but finished completely satisfied. thanks for summing up many of the thoughts I've had floating around in my head for a month now!

Lady Lupin, that was a wonderful, wonderful response. Your perceptive insight into the new events and character developments in Deathly Hallows was, IMO, both amazingly accurate and heart-warming; definitely the best editorial I have read in a long, long time. Jo has indeed put down her wand (a comparison which I absolutely loved) - and may Harry's magic live forever.

Lady Lupin, as always, your editorial was a beautiful reflection on a magnificent piece of writing. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the end of Harry's journey. I hope you will continue to reflect on the events of this most magical world even as the nostalgia begins to set in.

I've been a loyal fan of yours, Lady Lupin, ever since you started writing for Mugglenet. Spinner's End became my favorite column ever since it was created, of course. What JKR made me feel with Deathly Hallows about Harry Potter, you made me feel with Finite Incantatem about Spinner's End. Thanks for the ride, Lady Lupin.

But I don't want to say goodbye to Harry. Not yet, anyway.

*continues living in denial*

It was an excellent excellent editorial - It ties everything together nicely, and really makes you appreciate the series as a whole.

Quote:
I am glad that Harry named his son for Snape. Though reprehensible in many ways, Snape’s contribution stands next to anyone’s in terms of bravery, self-sacrifice and skill. And it took a heart like Harry’s to be able to bury his own years of resentment and to take in and honor the Severus he had never known.
I think this was my favorite part of the book. I positively LOVED knowing Snape's story. I was not at all surprised by his love of Lily. I was . . . reassured . . . by it and by Harry's compassion, as well. The fact that he could get beyond the horrible years of "Professor" Snape and actually see his mother's friend, Severus, was . . . encouraging . . . inspiring . . . just . . . nice.

Quote:
I cite as evidence a complete absence of insults about Lily from Snape over the course of the series. . . He insults James, Sirius and Lupin at every possible opportunity in Harry’s hearing but never once has he said a word against Lily. . . it stands to reason that seeing her eyes staring out of James’ face for the past six years would have been a torment.
Reading this was like a . . . a LOT of light bulbs going off in my brain! While I never had the conscience thought of it, it was almost as if you had put my thoughts in order for me. Jo does such an incredible job at making you not realize that Snape (except for that one pensieve moment) NEVER insults Lily. The concept, I think, was lingering in the back of my head, but you put it, well, plainly. Which is to say, perfectly.

As always! Well done.

Congratulations, Lady Lupin, on your wonderful analysis of the books. I haven't always agreed with you, in the past (I always thought Hagrid would live, for example). But I can't help but agree with your conclusions to the story. It is a relief to finally be able to look over the course of the books and see what a brilliant job Jo did of bringing her story together. Your summary ties it all together beautifully.

Re: Spinner's End #26 - Finite Incantatem

Really awesome editorial, nicely summing up the series. I completely agree about Dumbledore being even more fantastic after DH, as opposed to people crying about the picture-perfect Dumbledore they admired has gotten a stain on his name. What I particularly loved was, like you said, how he chose to be the man he wanted to be, and he could perfectly handle being in a position of Authority (like being Headmaster was), but not power (which he would have had a lot more of being MoM).

Quote:
He cares so much that he ultimately finds ways to continue his guidance from beyond the Veil and even to attend to Harry at the moment of his crossing.
Was that Dumbledore? I mean, sure, it was Dumbledore, but then again was it? Consider the story about Ignotus Peverell, and how he, after many years of wearing the Cloak, finally took off his Cloak, gave it to his son and greeted Death as an old Friend. This parallells what Harry did in the Forbidden Forest, taking off his Cloak, facing Voldemort and afterwards greeting Death/Dumbledore (an Old Friend). Could it have just been Death (like a Grim Reaper) in the shape that Harry would see him? There's so much weird going on with that chapter, and a lot to get one's head around...

best harry potter editorial I have ever read. Thank you so much for that, you expressed in a beautiful and perfect way, exactly what I felt while reading and after finishing the book.

Made me all sad again ...I still haven't reread the book, I don't know why .... it was soooooo sad but I loved every word

Anyway, thanks again!

That was seriously beautiful. I cried so much throughout the book and your thoughts on it really echoed mine.

Is it ok if I post a link to this on LJ HP_essays? I am sure the peeps there need to read this.

Lady Lupin - i've been waiting for your editoral since DH came out!! thank you!!

thanks especially for your reflections on Lupin - he is my favorite as well and I had not fully accepted his death until... well, now. Your thoughts on his finally accepting love in his own life are beautiful and touching.

Re: Spinner's End #26 - Finite Incantatem

When Lupin was killed, Lady Lupin, you were the first person I thought of. And I don't even know you!

In your editorial you said something about Snape being the opposite of a hero. I have to disagree with you on that. Yes, he was focused on his feelings (so is Harry most of the time), but he undertook a dangerous task out of love for a dead woman who could never reward him, never thank him, never respond to him. He did that for 16 years and he did it well, knowing that the only recompense he was likely to get was the one he did get: death at Voldemort's command. That doesn't sound unheroic to me.

Re: Spinner's End #26 - Finite Incantatem

Lady Lupin, I always love reading your Editorials and with great expectation I started to read your newest entry on DH - the last and final book in the series. Even if I repeat what a lot of our friends here have already said about your work. It is really amazing and awesome!I think you did a fantastic job - and I would go so far and say, yours is so far the best I have seen Online on any Harry Potter website or in a newspaper, talking about the book. I especially loved how you did NOT forget to thank Jo for her extraordinary achievement in fulfilling almost all our hopes - and yet staying true to her ideas till the end! Yes, I am also sad about Lupin, Tonks,Fred, Mad-Eye ,Dobby, Hedwig, Colin and Charity's death - but as you put it so well - that is how it goes when there is war....I admit - I cried a lot during reading - but when I came to these now famous last words of Snape:
Quote:

Look...at....me...
I cried as if a friend of mine had died....but all the same, I felt so relieved that Snape was on the good side...Dumbledore's side...let's be honest, without Professor Snape, Harry would have died long before the end...even if his motive was not the selfless act -but rather out of his great love to Lily! And I think - yes - Snape was a "hero"
In my opinion that and the next chapter was one of the best written chapters in the book.
Thank you again for your beautifully written work and please stay with us - I think Jo's last work deserves to be commented on.

Re: Spinner's End #26 - Finite Incantatem

Thanks, Lady Lupin, for another excellent editorial. I now completely agree with your assessment of Dumbledore. After my first read through, I was devastated and thought Dumbledore had betrayed Harry. King's Cross alleviated most of my concerns, yet not until my second read did I fully appreciate Dumbledore's sacrifice, genius, and love for Harry.

I also agree with your take on Snape. Although I have never been a Snape fan, I was saddened by his story and life. When Snape tells Dumbledore never to reveal his feelings to Harry, I wondered why then did he himself reveal those feelings to Harry. I believe he was asking for Harry's forgiveness and understanding. One reason I will never really care for Snape though is because I feel that if Voldemort had gone after Neville's family instead of Harry's would Snape have done anything about it?

I too was quite disturbed by the loss of Harry's firebolt. And though Harry did lose most of his magical aides, he did still retain his cloak, the most important of them all, at least in this book.

I wondered why JKR shows Hermione doing most of the magic in this book. But now I realize that although Harry is powerful and a good wizard, it was not his abilities at all which helped him to defeat the most powerful wizard in the world. As you said, "It was his heart."
