References to fans in books

Particularly in the last two books, I noticed that JK made several oblique references to the fan community. For instance, in HBP she used the Internet abbreviation DADA, and in DH she used Ron to voice the Internet speculation that Dumbledore was still alive. Has anyone else noticed any other things like this, or do you all think I am seeing things that don't exist?

The only thing that comes to mind is that scene in the forest when Harry told Ron that he thought of Hermione as a sister and he thought Ron had always know it. Pretty much cancelled out all the H/H shipping.

At the end of DH when Peeves is singing something about Voldemort being destroyed he actually says "Voldy".

All of the speculation about Remus having a twin Romulus which she discounted early on...then in Potterwatch she gave a nod for the thought (which she called great at the time) by making Remus' nickname Romulus.

Rita Skeeter writes a 900-page book in 4 weeks. Something we've always wanted for JKR to do.

Re: References to fans in books

How about the term 'The Marauders' I always thought it was a fan term because prior to HBP I don't recall it used in canon, but then she uses it in HBP.

And also 'Hermy'. Haha cute nick that some fans use for Hermione.

When I first read DADA in HBP I took no note of it. Goes to show how much of a fan I am to know such abbreviations. Later when I read it however, I thought just how cool Jo was in writing DADA. It was like a little nugget hidden in the book for serious fans.

And I also liked how she wrote Slughorn mistaking Ron for Rupert. Cute

And I also liked how before the films came out people didn't know how to pronouce Hermione's name so she slipped it into GoF.
Jo rocks!

Aside from having Remus and Tonk get married and have a baby, which was really probably the plan for some time, she further discounted the Remus/Sirius shippers by showing us Sirius' room, covered in half naked women.

Also, Teddy being a metamorphmagus struck me as a little shout-out to the fandom's love of "multi-colored werewolf pups" which she has said is a very funny idea.

While I am sure she had this planned for a long time I see PotterWatch as a shout out to the multiple AMAZING podcast in the HP fandom. Also Dwalish's first name is John and I really do not think that is just a coincidence.

Re: References to fans in books

According to www.mugglenet.com:

Quote:
McDonald, Natalie - In Goblet of Fire (American hardcover edition, pg. 180), a girl named Natalie McDonald was sorted into Gryffindor House. She was a real girl who was suffering from a terminal illness. She wrote J.K. Rowling a letter. J.K. Rowling wrote back to Natalie and her letter included an outline of Goblet of Fire so if Natalie died, she would know how the book went. Unfortunately, the letter was too late. In memory of Natalie McDonald, J.K. Rowling included her name in Goblet of Fire.
I know it doesn't directly relate to the forums and those fans but...when I read it I started crying.

Yeah, I read that too once, and got all sad, but it really was so wonderful of Jo to do.

I also noticed the Rupert thing, when Slughorn kept forgetting Ron's name. The first time I read HBP, when I got to that part, it was like, 11:00 at night, but I laughed really loud at it, then freaked since I thought I woke everyone up.

Also, the line in DH about "Of course this is happening in your head, but wy on earth shoud that mean it is not real?" I think in a way it is to herself and to all of us.

Plus, she dedicated the book to her fans, at least in part.

That actually stems from PoA when she introduces the marauder's map and then reveals that it was written by Harry's dad and his friends.

I noticed the multicolored pup thing too, that was pretty funny. I thought she might actually do it, but the metamorphmagus was better for Teddy, lol.

I doubt the Remus/Sirius shippers will be affected. The Draco/Harry shippers knew from book 1 that was never going to happen and it didn't seem to slow them down one bit. Fans just write whatever they want, ignoring or dispensing with whatever doesn't fit into their ideologies.

Same for the Harry/Hermione shippers. The fate of poor Ginny in those stories...

Re: References to fans in books

In Deathly Hallows, I couldn't believe the passage about Norbert the dragon actually being a female named Norberta. I died laughing when I read that!

There is a poster here on CoS named Norbertha - a wonderful friend/adopted daughter of mine! She isn't around much anymore because she recently had a baby, little Magnus, and we had talked about her pregnancy and motherhood here and on Harry Potter Network.

She used to have a popular thread called "I Was Bullied and Got Over It and So Should Severus Snape." (The I.W.B.A.G.O.I.A.S.S.S.S.) It was a long-running thread about Snape's therapist, Dr. Hankie, and his progress in dealing with his problems. She also wrote a more serious essay on Bullying in the books with myself and Subtle Science - Here.

I asked her what she thought of "Norberta" being a Mommy, and she said she felt as if JKR was writing just for her! I agree!

That is EXACTLY what I thought when I read that quote in the book. I was like... JK Rowling is speaking out to her fans through Dumbledore. She has said she is more like Hermione, so it would be too obvious if Hermione said something that referenced the fans.

Also, the dedication is a BIG way of thanking the fans and speaking to the fans... I loved it.

Re: References to fans in books

You know what I thought was quite special? When in DH she did her dedication. Where she split it into seven parts and the final part said "and to you, if you have stuck with Harry until the very end." It actually reduced me to tears. Infact, I've got tears in my eyes right now. I thought it was such a nice gesture. I can't explain how it made me feel, or why...

I thought this was great when she did this, i was thinking ive heard his nickname before and realised it was HP fans which called him it.

Also the thanks she gives before the start of the book to the harry potter fans who have stayed with harry to the end.

ps. I noticed something not in the book but in the OotP film when harry and everyone are in the hogs head and we see the barman (Aberforth) shooing goats away lol

Re: References to fans in books

I remember hearing about a theory that Harry would kill Voldemort with the Sword of Gryffindor. In the chapter The Will of Albus Dumbledore, Jo makes what seems to be a referrence to those kinds of theories. When Scrimgeour asks if Dumbledore possibly thought that the Heir of Slytherin could only be killed by the Sword of Gryffindor, Harry asks if anyone's ever tried sticking a sword in Voldemort, and suggests that maybe they should get some people on that instead of wasting time stripping down Deluminators.
