Maybe you were thinking of "estudioso"? That can be masculine or feminine, correct?

Re: Spanish

I'm doing a project for Spanish, and I was wondering if this sentence makes sense.

Mi abuelo tenía tres hijos, pero un hijo morió.

Yes, it makes sense. The only thing that I would slightly edit is the second part "pero un hijo murio" ... You can say "pero uno murió", which is literally "but one died" because we already know that you are talking about the "hijos". That way, it isn't too redundant..

PS: It is "murió", instead of "morió".

In addition to what GinnyisGenius said, I would actually say "pero uno se murió." To make it reflexive implies that the child had no fault in the dying.

¡Hola!

It depends in the country where the people are talking. In many Spanish-speaking countries, they use the form "Uds." (Ustedes) to refer to more than one person. Traditionally in Spain Uds. is the formal form, and vosotoros is what one uses with people that one know or that are of the same age. In other countries (especially in Latin America) they use Uds. for all groups that have more than one person. Probably the person that translated this passage was from Latin America.

I hope I answered your question!

I understand that. I studied in northern Spain for a couple of months so I am used to Castillian, too, but here in the States most Spanish teachers teach "Mexican Spanish" because it is so much more "useful."

¿En qué parte de España, si puedo preguntar? ¡Puede ser que conozca el sitio!

Where in Spain, may I ask? It could be I know the place!

"Estudioso" es un participio; es una forma verbal que funciona como un adjetivo. Por tanto, tiene género y se usa una forma para el masculino (estudioso) y otra para el femenino (estudiosa).

"Estudioso" is a participle, a verb form that works like an adjective. Therefore, it has got gender, and there's a form for the masculine (estudioso) and another for the feminine (estudiosa).

Re: Spanish

Ok, I haven't posted here in forever...and my Spanish has not at all improved since then. But my dad learned Spanish when he was in 2nd grade (years and years and years ago!) and he is convinced that he still know it, but I'm not sure he does sometimes.

He sometimes jokingly calls me something along the lines of Pendeja (sorry if it's spelled wrong, I tried to sound it out.), which he says means stupid girl. It sounds like "pen-day-ha" when he says it. I always thought the word for stupid was estupido or something Is he right?

Actually, it's quite a profane word, the equivalent of the A word or the B word. I hope you know what I mean, if not I can owl it to you. My friends and I use it as a joke, but I wouldn't advise using the word around strangers, or as meaning "stupid."

Re: Spanish

I know what words you mean. (unless you're referring to a not-so-common A and B words?) I'll have to tell my dad he's been insulting me all this time! LOL

¡Sí, he estudiado La Rioja en uno de mis clases en España! También la discutimos cuando leímos un cuento en una clase de la universidad.
Fuimos a Madrid con el programa pero no pudimos ver mucho de la ciudad. Solamente fuimos a La Reina Sofia y El Prado.
¿Todo está bien con mi español?

Yes, I have studied La Rioja in one of my classes in Spain! Also we discussed it when we read a story in a university class.
I went to Madrid with the program, but we did not see much of the city. We only went to the Reina Sofia and the Prado.
Everything ok with my Spanish?
