Internet Explorer - Troubleshooting Thread

Having problems with IE? Ask a question in here and see if a member can give you some advice or help. Alternatively use another browser.

Thanks -- I'll go and edit my question that I had into this thread.

I've been having this problem on and off for about a month now . My PC won't shut down due to this, and the only way that I found out so far to shut it down is to press the Power button. I don't like to shut down my PC this way, due to the fact that files can get lost this way or messed up.

Is there any other way that I can remedy this problem?

Thanks .

Edit: By the way, I've run virus scans (AVG) almost every day, along with Ad-Aware scans -- and I have no viruses on my computer and I only get some cookies, that I go and remove off of Ad-Aware. So I know that the problem is not related to either of those things.

If you're using Windows XP or Vista then a System Restore back to the time before this issue occured might be a good solution for you If you go to All Programs -- Accessories -- System Tools -- System Restore and choose a date before the problem began!

This is an Internet Explorer problem? It sounds to me like you've got a process running that won't end. If that's the case, I would suggest checking the programs that run on startup, and also going into your Task Manager and, under the Processes tab, manually ending the process that is causing the problem. But be careful when ending a process, as ending a process that your operating system needs will likely cause your system to shutdown.

Hmm -- that's what I thought too. I looked it up on Microsofts' official site and that's what they said as well.

Ok, I'll do my best when doing that, and I'll double check with the computer technician that I took my computer into in order to have it checked out as well, so I'll do it correctly and not cause my system to shutdown.

Re: Internet Explorer - Troubleshooting Thread.

K, this isnt exactly a problem it's just something annoying.

The icons for my .htm files don't work. I can open them by double-clicking them, but the icons dont show the IE icon.

I HAVE TRIED: Going to folder options and changing the icon for .HTM and .HTML files. It dosen't work.

Hmm, not the best solution. I'd use this only if reformatting is the only other option. Windows Restore is unreliable and is known to cause issues. Last time I got that desperate to use it it screwed up my settings and I ended up reformatting anyway

Try changing the default program they open with from IE to word, apply and then back again. This should refresh and reload the icon.

Restoring Windows using your installation CD is never a good idea. In my experience it doesn't actually solve any problems.

System restore however has saved my skin countless times after making tweaks or changes to XP that really shouldn't have been made. I like to call it the big 'UnDo' Button in XP. It's never had any adverse effects for me...

Hmm, guess it depends on your different experiences then. I wasn't talking about using "Windows Restore". I was talking about deleting the partition and doing a completely clean install. Having always built PC's myself, I don't have restore disks, just the original XP disk.

Re: Internet Explorer - Troubleshooting Thread.

Oh the joys of Vista, you can System Restore from your installation disk.

And I'm sure there was that useless Recovery Console thing within the XP installation disk when you boot with it as if making a clean installation, never managed to find any use for it.

I've messed windows up enough times to need a clean install with XP quite a lot in my younger years, luckily I'm slightly less experimental now!

Re: Internet Explorer - Troubleshooting Thread.

This isn't a problem persay with IE, but my internet was running slowly after I was on Aol's site (music) -- I ran both a virus scan and a cookie scan and there were no viruses (thank gosh) but there were 26 cookies, just from that site alone, once I deleted them and got back on the internet and cleared my history, the internet was running normally again.

Just a friendly warning to you guys out there -- avoid Aol's site, there's something going on with it . I don't want to see this happening to anyone else either .

Re: Internet Explorer - Troubleshooting Thread.

Yeah, never install AOL software on a PC either, it's almost impossible to get rid of.

Thanks for the tip -- I was lucky enough to get rid of Aim on mine. Also, I just got rid of any Aol software off of my PC -- thank gosh, my computer was good enough to do that.

Re: Internet Explorer - Troubleshooting Thread.

Oh you'd be suprised, AOL files turn up in the most unexpected places. Once you install an AOL bit of software then you decide to uninstall it you'll still be finding AOL files here there and everywhere for years!

Check your registry. AOL likes to leave behind Keys so it knows if it's been on that PC before.

Where would that be located?

I have to strongly advise against messing with the Registry if you don't know what you're doing.

Yea, if you don't know about the registry, leave well alone. I would only suggest removing AOL registry keys if you know what you are doing without asking for help.
