Re: Orchestra

Ah I miss orchestra... I was in it from 5th to 9th, playing cello. It wasn't really that great to actually play the cello (but more fun than other instruments), but it was really fun for the socialization, because you join a small group of people for a long time and get to know them.

My Favorite Songs for Cello:
-Into the Storm
-Pier Gynt Suite
-Russian Sailor's Dance
-Habanera
-Danse Macabre (...spelling)
-something sahara... it was all plucking and went G-D-D-G-D repeat D-A-A-D-A... muy muy dificil.

Least Favorite:
-Pachelbel's Canon in D (of course... it's obligatory!)

Re: Orchestra

In the middle school orchestras here, and in a lot of the high schools, the students don't know how to tune their own instruments! When I was taught violin that was the first thing I learned. Anyway, I taught my grandson to play viola and he can certainly tune his own instrument! When I am at rehearsals to play piano I have a line to tune instruments. The director is at one end of the room and I am at the other and we get it done in no time. But we shouldn't have to be getting it done at all.

Walk out to your seat, turn to the audience and bow. Then turn to the orchestra. The orchestra will be all tuned up and all you have to do is play an A and let them play their open strings. Then sit down. Out comes the conductor and away you go!

Re: Orchestra

Last year, my orchestra teacher kind of had like a single lesson to teach everyone another orchestra instrument. it was really really fun. It was kind of annoying to stop using violin fingers (since for cello, your hands sort of span out from your hand, and on violin, they sort of go forward, not sure if i'm making any sense, but oh well), but really cool all the same. cellos only got to try bass though, since there weren't enough violins.

You're lucky, around here no one really thinks much of orchestra except the people in it. We know we're cooler than band geeks though yay violas!!

Re: Orchestra

As some of you already know, I play the piano for our public school orchestras when there is a part to be had, if not, I write one. Anyway, you also know that I taught my grandson to play viola last year so he could come into orchestra and be up with all the seventh graders who had already had one year of it.

So far so good. However, he hates to play alone in front of anyone else and his orchestra teacher jokingly said that 'he makes his own vibrato from sheer terror.' He may play a piece perfectly but get him alone in front of an audience... oh my. He will do well in all the concerts and festivals that we have to play as an orchestra but I am worried about him auditioning for All-City Orchestra. I think they have to play Brandenburg No. 5 so I will work on it with him and I can also play the keyboard part with him. Here's hoping for a good result!

I was in my school orchestra for my last two years of secondary (high) school, playing Flute, and I LOVED it, so so much. I really miss it now.

Re: Orchestra

I've played clarinet for seven years, but I've only been in an orchestra for the past two. I'm a total orch dork and our T-shirts from last year have a dophin and a trainer holding a fish in one hand and a sheet of music in the other. The top reads "Will learn rhythm for food". The sad thing is that we will

HEY EVERYONE!

I'm Jalen. I play viola in two orchestras. Love love love! I am the biggest orch-dork you'll ever meet.

I had no idea there was a COS board like this one

Re: Orchestra

We played in a 'By Invitation Only' national competition in Williamsburg, VA today. We won first place for our level. Afterward we took the kids to Busch Gardens for the day. It seems that there were orchestra/band/chorus competitions all over the area so the park was chock full of musicians. It was really neat to be around so many different music lovers. I talked to one lady who had come with her daughter from Connecticutt to Norfolk State University and then their chorus came all the way to Williamsburg to go to Busch. The awards ceremony for all these competitions was held at Busch.

One of the children commented to my grandson that I was the 'nice old lady who played the piano.' I told him, "How dare they call me nice!"

Re: Orchestra

I went to Disney World this past weekend with a high school orchestra (my 7th grade grandson who plays viola also participated) to play a concert and to take part in a workshop on playing music soundtracks for films. We did Beauty and the Beast. It was hotter than Hades and I really didn't care for any of it until we got to Epcot for the workshop. Epcot rocks. I would like to say the trip was uneventful but so many things went wrong, least of all the bus catching on fire and being put out by a convenient deluge of rain (Look! There goes Noah and the Ark!), that it got to be funny. I mean what could happen next, what with armadillos, head lice on a student, fire alarms (two), kids trying to get into Disney in their pajamas, attractions closed because of lightning strikes, me ending up in first aid with heat exhaustion.....?

I had three cats on the bed with me last night. They were so glad to have me home. Today they followed me around the house. I had a long rehearsal today with the middle school orchestra and we had some visitors. When I asked if this was the first time they had played a piece, the visitors cracked up. Well, they sounded awful to me. I was seeing the music for the first time and I did fine.
