Well as far as I can tell, based on the context in which the "Don't get caught" rule has been cited on the show every time, it's about the execution: take all precautions when planning and executing the kill so as not to get caught. Prevent such a situation from arising. I don't think Harry ever mentioned what happens if it does arise.

But didn't dark passenger!Harry try to persuade Dexter to kill Lumen for the very reason that she saw him? It would have been right according to the code or at least that's how I understood it. Of course, Dexter interprets the code differently every time. He couldn't bring himself to kill Lumen because she was a victim not unlike himself and she was innocent. But Quinn and Liddy actively followed him around and especially Liddy tried to get him arrested to further his own interests. The sympathy factor for these two is understandably non-existent.

I understand that, but I don't think the Code ever considered the sympathy factor. The rule that only murderers are fair game was introduced by Harry in order to reign Dexter's murderous instinct - Harry said something to this effect himself. So randomly introducing presence or lack of compassion as a factor seems forced to me. Or not properly built up. But maybe that's a part of the whole "Dexter getting a soul" thing that's been going on in this season that I can't follow properly anyway.

This is also assuming Dexter went to the van to kill Quinn, not just knock him out and stash him somewhere to figure out what was going on first.

I thought he initially went to the van to see what the guy knew but when he saw it was liddy and he tried to capture him the situation changed a bit.

Yeah, but he wears his kill clothes to go to people's houses to investigate whether or not they're kill worthy too. Those aren't exclusively his "kill" clothes. They're his dark passenger clothes, you could say.

I didn't get the creeps or really much of a hit of interesting possibility off Astor. They badly need Lumen back next season, otherwise the biggest "step forward" will be the romance between Deb and Quinn. Even though he's had some positive and almost believable moments, that coupling is just stomach-turning, particularly considering they burned off Anton without so much as a second thought in season 4.

In case you missed the news, they're actually divorcing and there have been rumours that Michael and Julia had something going on...

I was disappointed with Lumen leaving, but I can see why. Her character served it's purpose- Dexter found that people won't turn away when they find out what he is.

I have a very strong feeling that next season Deb will find out about Dexter. She's come so close so many times and now after the 'vigilante' and how she let them go, I think she'll be more open to it and whilst she might not accept him, she'll be a good sister and protect his secret. Especially because Quinn knows (well, suspects) as well. And Quinn owes Dexter now because of the blood work that cleared him with Liddy.

I also think they will start pursing the 'Astor is disturbed' story line too. Astor is now a teenager, so it's not as wrong as it could have been. In the books both Astor and Cody have dark leanings (I'm only partially through the books though so I don't know how it all shakes down), so having Astor figure out what Dexter is and wanting to learn could be a good story line.

Dexter does need a permanent love interest though- he was so good with Rita and then Lumen fit him perfectly. He needs to find someone who is part Rita, part Lumen.

I think he really needs Lumen personally. I still can't get my head around the fact that we're supposed to embrace the Deb/Quinn thing as the most positive permanent result of this season. I mean other than Biney this has the tang of her worst choice in men (even with all that time the spent trying to make Quinn sympathetic). I was never a fan of the Lundy romance, but it's leaps and bounds above this...and Anton (probably her most stable relationship) got burned off because they were in love with the chemistry between the characters of Deb and Lundy (and the actors who played them) and it provided possibility for more intrigue and personal complications.

I'm not sure about an Astor storyline. I haven't seen enough to be convinced that it would work (maybe I'm skeptical of the actress).

LOVEEEEE this show! Probably one of the best I watch other than House. The second season was pretty intense with Lila and Doax.

2nd season is still my all time favorite season, they did such a great job, you were constantly wondering if dexter really was going to get caught, but then said he's dexter he cant get caught, but it looks like he might get caught.... nail biter!

They're on hiatus right now. New season supposed to start in the fall (as best I can determine).

Yea that seasons usually run from about mid to late september through about the end of november/beginng of december.

Apparently you have not read the books. If you did, you would know that there are VERY few similarities that connect the two. The characters names are the same, but the way they are portryed and even the events (murders) in the stories are different from the ones shown in the TV series.

I personally prefer the TV series better. It was easier to follow.
