Edgar Allan Poe

What do you guys think of his stuff? We've just started our Poe unit in Language. I'm excited to read his stuff. He had a rough past didn't he? Knew and loved, like 3 or 4 people who died of the same disease.

We read The Tell-Tale Heart the other day. Next we're going to read The Black Cat.

Anyways, just wondering what you guys and girls thought of his work.

Re: Edgar Allan Poe

I discovered Poe in middle school and loved him, both the creepy short stories and his poetry.

In seventh grade, my mom read "The Tell-Tale Heart" to me and firneds I had over at a quasi-Hallowe'enm party. Great stuff. I also really like "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Cask of Amontillado".

I liked "The Raven" so much that I memorized it - still remember most of it some 20 years later. I also really like "Annabel Lee" (sort of creepy) and "The Bells" just for the way it sounds when it is read aloud, the rythm is really amazing.

So yeah, love Poe.

I remember "The Pit and the Pendulum' as being both fascinating and gory. I loved Poe when I was in middle school, too. The Raven was easy to memorize because it was so interesting and it rhymed.

I really love "The Raven" although that is mainly because of the Simpsons halloween version of it.

Haha, we haven't read "The Raven" or "Pit and the Pendulum" yet. We're not reading "The Fall of the House of Usher", because apparently it's too difficult. But we just finished "The Murder's or the Rue Morgue". Pretty good once it was explained

I love Edgar Allan Poe! Usually, I'm a very happy-go-lucky girl, but his stuff is one of my most wonderful exceptions! I love the way he writes and everything he writes about. He's one of my favorites.

Re: Edgar Allan Poe

I loved his story "The Cask of Amantillado" -- it was well written and the ending was good. Rather tragic as well, in a way.

I know. Everyone he cared about died from TB, yet he oddly enough never got it himself despite it being highly contagious. He also had the weirdest death. No one knows what happened to him. He disappeared for a few days and then he was found on the street in clothes that weren't his mumbling to himself. Then he died a few hours later....

I really like "The Raven." It is such a creepy and depressing story, but I think the symbolism is brilliant.

Yea, that's rather weird -- I remember hearing something awhile back on some show that said that he may have died from Rabies... I guess we'll never know what he really died from. In the end he was somewhat of a tragic figure .

Re: Edgar Allan Poe

I got a bit disappointed with The Murders in the Rue Morgue (for detective stories, I prefer Sherlock Holmes rather than Auguste Dupin), but liked The Gold Bug a lot, and got quite fascinated by his horror stories. For me, the creepiest of all is The Masque of the Red Death. I've always wondered whether the Phantom's disguise in the mask ball of The Phantom of the Opera wasn't inspired in this story. I never tried The Raven, but for what you say, I see I must do it as soon as I find it in the library.

I don't care for "The Black Cat" either, though I like most of his other stories. I found it too depressing, though. I have too much of a soft spot for animals, especially cats.

Does anyone else feel that, in a few stories, the ending doesn't seem to really follow from the rest of the story? For instance, in "The Fall of the House of Usher," it's clear that something weird was going to happen, but how the ending is connected to the events of the story is kind of up to speculation, at least from how I saw it. And I don't completely understand what occured in the ending of "Berenice."

However, I like a lot of his stories quite a bit. My favorites are "The Oblong Box" and "The Cask of Armontillado" (though I found the latter a bit random, too).

Re: Edgar Allan Poe

I love Edgar Allan Poe.... I discovered his work when I was in the seventh grade, my teacher recommended him for me and thought it would boost my reading. It really helped. My senior year I bought "The Complete Tales and Poems" by Edgar Allan Poe. Everyone thought I was weird because I like his works, I'm not sure why.... My favorites include: "The Tell-Tale Heart", "Pit and the Pendulum", "The Black Cat", "The Raven", "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", and finally "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket". His simply fabuluous!

Re: Edgar Allan Poe

I havent read him for a while now, but I do recall loving his stories. I agree Holmes is loads better than Dupin , but the rest of his works are awesome. I like" The Fall of the Usher house" , that tale has always given me the creeps ,but I love it. Also " The Golden Bug" I think its real good.

I dont like "The Raven" I know this is like a sin, but I simply dont.

Re: Edgar Allan Poe

I love Edgar Allen Poe. I just finished reading a multitude of his stories in my World Lit class. I really love his style of writing. Some of my favorites include The Cask of Amantillado and The Masque of the Red Death. I thought the latter was one of his creepiest stories. I was not impressed as much with The Murders in the Rue Morgue. I prefer Poe's classic gory stories to this one.

Re: Edgar Allan Poe

I love Poe as well. He has some great stories, but his poems (especially The Raven and Annabel Lee) are the reason I love him. The patterns of rhyme and the rhythm of his language are just so stunning--he's a master.

It gives me the creeps too, one of the main reasons I love it. Youre right, it is a sin!

Re: Edgar Allan Poe

I'm a Poe fan I actually own 3 books full of poems and stories.

The Raven is by far my favorite of all his work, and I actually have part of it memorized. I used to take the smallest of my Poe books to work with me and memorize lines while I worked (Hi, I'm a nerd).

Re: Edgar Allan Poe

I think there was a point in my life where I memorized the first couple paragraphs of "The Tell-Tale Heart" and about half of "The Raven." I probably still remember it all.
