Re: Best little-used characters?

All of the characters mentioned seem good. . . I'm currently re-reading the series and I am quite curious about something. . . I'm noticing that in the beginings of the books, at the sorting, JK gives many of the first years names before telling what house they're in. Why does she mention their names if they aren't going to be mentioned again? Any thoughts?

I really liked Dean also. I loved the fact that he was there in the end, I just wish that Rowling would have given him a bigger part in the fighting a such. He had more to lose than most, knowing he couldn't prove his parentage.

Well, Weasley's Wizard Wheezes is a family business, so I think it's appropriate that Ron helped George out.

Anyway...

I really wanted to find out more about the first Order of the Phoenix. We get such hints about them when Moody whips out his photo, but we never get to hear about them as characters. Judging from the Order we know and love, they must have been close during the first war too, so I would have liked to read a bit about those relationships.

In that same vein, I've lately been wishing we'd seen some more of James Potter. I mean, we hear a lot about him, but everytime we actually see him, minus in the forest, he's kind of a jerk. I don't think he was really that way, but there's not much indicating the opposite.

Re: Best little-used characters?

I always found it a bit odd that Justin Finch-Fletchly never really pops up again. We see him obviously in CoS but not really after that, if at all. I always enjoyed his character. I also wish we could have seen more of Ernie too who was highly amusing.

Stan Shunpike was another one of my favorites. I always loved his little appearances in the books, especially the minor one in GoF.

Of course Oliver Wood too. I really wish we had seen him a bit more in the later books. He does make a brief appearance in GoF at the World Cup, but I still wish there had been more.

Also with Charlie, it was always a bit weird to me that he was essentially the first outside hogwarts member of the Weasley family we were really introduced to. Of course we did see Mrs. Weasley and Ginny early in the book, but we didn't really get to know them. Charlie however has a specific purpose and we do learn more about him than we know about Mr. or Mrs Weasley, Ginny or Bill. And yet, we rarely see him again. How odd.

Re: Best little-used characters?

My favorite little-used characters would have to be Oliver Wood and Lee Jordan. I liked Oliver because his Quidditch obsession was hilarious, especially when he told Harry to get the snitch or die trying. Lee Jordan's commentary was hilarious. (Except I think I love Luna's a bit more.) And I was so happy when I heard him on Potterwatch! The good thing about Oliver and Lee is that they both came back to Hogwarts to fight the Death Eaters.

I also like Dean and Seamus, if they count as little-used characters. I couldn't help but smile when Seamus hugged Dean in the RoR after not seeing him for a long time.

Re: Best little-used characters?

I like Seamus as a minor character, mainly for his role in OotP. He was somebody that Harry knew well and liked, yet he was deceived by Fudge and the Ministry. It made Harry's fight much more personal, because someone he considered a friend was on the opposite side.

I also like the giant squid. Even though it has absolutely no significance to the story line, it is very mysterious, which I like. It lives in the lake, everybody knows it lives there, yet very few have ever seen it. I also liked (I think it was in GoF) when Dennis falls in the lake and responds with excitement rather than fear when he learns about the giant squid shortly afterwards.

Re: Best little-used characters?

Dean Thomas, Lee Jordan, and Oliver Wood. I don't know why. Wood was always kind of comical when it came to Quidditch, and Lee was always pretty hilarious as commentator (not as much as Luna though lol). I don't know why I like Dean. I think it's cause of his story and how much could have been added about him that Jo had to cut out.
On a side note, I wonder how Lee felt when Fred asked Angelina to the Yule Ball, cause it always seemed like Lee liked her.

Colin Creevy! That kid was so darn cute but annoying! haha! I don't know why, but had to mention that poor kid.

Re: Best little-used characters?

Colin Creevey, definitely, brave little tyke! And his brother Dennis, whom I keep asking about in other threads (where was he all year in DH, did he stay and fight like his brother, what became of him?)

More people from Houses other than Gryffindor and Slytherin (Hannah Abbott, Susan Bones, Ernie McMillan, etc.) - Oh and Justin. For some reason, I like Justin Finch-Fetchley.

Harry's Quidditch team-mates, and yes, Lee Jordan.

Madam Hooch (a great Flying teacher and Quidditch referee), Madam Rosmerta, Augusta Longbottom (what happened to her during and after the Hogwarts Battles?). Oh and what became of Rita Skeeter after writing her best-seller "The Life and Lies.."? Not a likeable character but certainly a colorful one.

I'd have liked to know a but more about Gellert Grindenwald too. Especially now, after the interview where Jo said that he and Dumbledore were an "item" - but even without that, he's an interesting character.

And FAWKES! I want to know where Fawkes went after Dumbledore died. I was hoping to see him appear again in DH and heal a few wounds.

In the question and answer session in New York on friday night, Jo said that Hannah and Neville married. Hannah runs the Leaky Cauldron and they live above it.
There's a thread about it here: Neville and Hannah?

Re: Best little-used characters?

I agree with the Oliver Wood. He needed to be in the sereis more. Harry looked up to him as a coach and someone to live up to, and it woudl have been nice for him to have a bigger part in the books once he left Hogwarts. Maybe a letter every one in a while.

Oliver Wood! I love how Quidditch-obsessed he was, and with the little mentions we got of him after he left Hogwarts made me hope we might see him again.
I was very pleased when he returned for the Final Battle, but I have no idea how he found out about the Battle.

That would've been awesome. Just to find out a bit about the first generation of the Order, maybe a bit of backstary, would have been cool.

Re: Best little-used characters?

I definately agree with the people saying Lee Jordan. He was always one of the characters who seemed to be on the edge of the story, always threatening to come through. Also Peeves, to find out some sort of backstory as to why he is at Hogwarts and why the teachers cannot get rid of him, even though he does seem to do as they say at some points within the series.

I would have liked to have learned more about Dedalus Diggle. We hear about him in the first chapter of the first book, I was sure that he'd have more to do, or at least more mention than he had. I always enjoy reading about him and his fireworks

I completely agree. Pre-DH I held onto the hope that Dedalus Diggle was the Order member we'd find out about (of course, I was completely wrong and my hopes were all made in vain). He's such a fun loving character, and I love all mentions of him

I forgot Oliver Wood in my earlier post. He knows what is important in life. (sports)

Re: Best little-used characters?

I really enjoyed Dean Thomas and Lee Jordon was probably out there making people laugh behind the scenes were just weren't privvy to it

I really also would have liked to see more Angelina she was such a strong character to have around and to not hear much of her later was a disappointment.
