Re: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape v3

When I first heard that AR was to be cast as Snape, I couldn't think of anyone more perfect for the role. The only thing that I thought would be a problem, was the age factor. But as it has panned out, all the actors that play his contemporarys are older than the characters they are portraying.

I don't think they would dare make that scene too gory, as I think they will want to get it past the censors for a younger audience than for Sweeny Todd.

I think Alec Hopkins mentioned during an interview, that AR spent some considerable time with him, discussing Snape and his mannerisms before he filmed SWM. Which, was very kind and generous of him, so I am sure he will do the same if another actor is brought in to play a young Snape.

Yes, the costume is just right IMO. To me it is all those buttons that give the costume feeling of repression.

It was really nice of him to take the time to do that.

Yep, plus the long sleeves with just his fingers showing, the high neck collar. It all adds to the impression (layers and repressed feelings) of the character, imo.

Yeah- I imagine that had to do with our lack of a basic timetable or a definitive timetable at that time- as to how the books would pan out and how old everyone was. It makes sense to us now, and you're also right that with them allb eing roughly the same age, even if older than originall expected, it still fits pretty well. And I have to say that he genuinely looks way younger than he is in the films, it's amazing. I know he doesn't exactly look 60-whatever anyway, but I would put him in his forties in the HP films- which is close enough to keep me happy.

Also true. I just hope they keep it in mind. After all, the last book isn't family friendly in some ways. It's so dark, so repressive, so cruel in places. The tossing aside of human life is bad enough- and they'll have to tone down that Charity Burbage scene anyway (if they use it at all), so I guess they will be careful enough, .

Couldn't agree more. And the darkness of it suits the character perfectly.

Re: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape v3

I cannot believe I havent commented here before!

Of all the actors playing the characters, if anyone got it spot-on, it is Alan Rickman!

And thats as good a compliment as I can give

He played Snape perfectly, is amongst the reasons I like Snape ( I finally confessed!) and he did a great job in all the films that I cannot imagine anyone else playing Snape. I'm looking forward to the HBP and DH films because I know Alan Rickman's going to give an amazing performance, as usual! Way to go, Alan

Yes I agree. They'd have to tone it down if they have it- just the way they toned down the Wormtail cutting his arm scene in GoF.

You bet Annie! I loved his costumes- they were just right and suited his character to a tee.

And besides, the thing I'm most looking forward to is "Look At Me!!". Alan Rickman will more than pull it off in style!!

Totally agree! I'm really hoping the director will let Alan Rickman act the scene fully there.

Yes, all that black and with just a little bit of white collar and cuffs showing, hinting that underneath he is really a good guy. That is of course, if you go with the old fashioned colour code of white representing good, just like in the old cowboy films.

Ah... that should be so good if like Annie said, he is left to do it his way.

And it really will have to be his way and nobody else's. I'll have waited eight movies to see that line, I want it to come good for me!!!

It will have to be Snape- quiet, lost, alone and above all, regretful. Perhaps. I haven't fully decided yet what I want.

Now that I think about it I can't imagine Snape lost, quiet or regretful. What if he's more aggressive like how he talked to Harry in OoP? It could go both ways and remember, JKR said he loathed Harry right until the end.

JKR also later said Severus and Harry found a kind of peace together in the end.

Perhaps an intentness? That Harry for once looks at the facts in the memories concerning Severus, sees the truth and understands. He is also using up the last of his strength there.

Re: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape v3

oh gosh I want to hear that too but I think I want to see the memories like the line "Always" had better be in the movie.

He is soo perfect and has been building up to the moment when he reveals all anyways.

Oh yeah!! I hope they have it fully Alan Rickman would do a great job, if they left it to him.

Here's the actual quote from "The Prince's Tale"

"I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter's son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter-"

"But this is touching, Severus," said Dumbledore seriously. "Have you grown to care for the boy, after all?"

"For him?" shouted Snape.'Expecto Patronum!'

From the tip of his wand burst the silver doe: she landed on the office floor, bounded once across the office and soared out of the window. Dumbledore watched her fly away, and as her silvery glow faded, he turned back to Snape, and his eyes were full of tears.

"After all this time?"

"Always," said Snape
.

IMO, "The Prince's Tale" and the last bit of "The Elder Wand" have the potential to be the best scenes in DH, infact the best scenes in the entire HP Film series! Rickman sure will do an awesome job.

Here's quoting from the book for the "Look...at..me" line. I love the way JKR's written it. Its so powerful and emotional and sets up a great platform for Rickman in the movies.

"Take... it..Take...it.."

[....]

"Look...at...me" he whispered.

The green eyes found the black, but after a second something in the depths of the dark pair seemed to vanish, leaving them fixed, blank and empty. The hand holding Harry thudded to the floor and Snape moved no more.

Oh, gosh yes, absolutely, me too! I am rather worried though, that much of 'The Princes Tale' may be cut out of the film. Although, that particular scene does establish that it was Snape's patronus that visited Harry in the forest. Fingers crossed!

As Rickman has known about Snape's love for Lily right from the start, I imagine he has been building up to this moment. He has had a long time to consider it, so, yeah, I think he will do a fantastic job.

Re: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape v3

Small interview with Alan Rickman:

Q. Do children recognize you as Harry Potter's Severus Snape?

A. Not really, because I'm generally not walking around wearing a black wig.

Q. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" comes out in July, and later in the year, you'll begin filming the series' final installment, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." How do you feel knowing that the end is in sight?

A. It means that I'll be able to do more theater as an actor. I couldn't really because I never know what my commitment could be.

Q. Would you ever do another film, knowing it could be six sequels?

A. Only if I was provided with a wheelchair and an oxygen tank.
