The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

Hi everyone.

This is my first attempt at a fic in a while, especially a post DH one.

I hope everyone enjoys The Trial of Dolores Umbridge and please leave me feedback in my feedback thread, I look forward to reading your opinons.

A dumpy form, cloaked in black, stalked its way through the crowds of fur clad Muggles and ducked into a doorway which overhung with icicles as two wizards, dressed in Muggle attire, walked by,

"Potter is still looking for me. Need to find another hiding place, can't let him catch me."

She muttered to herself and went inside, slamming the door. The wizards heard and turned to find empty air. One threw back his fur hood and frowned, his brow furrowed yet a faded scar could still be seen. He removed his glasses and cleaned them vigorously as he looked about, his red headed companion staring at the house in front of him,

"We'll get her, Harry. The old toad cannot have gone far."

The wizard called Harry frowned again and looked towards the north, he spoke,

"She got away from us in Zanzibar, she can't vanish here in the only Muggle city close to Durmstrang. Professor Starislov would warn us if she turned up there, we'll catch her for sure, Ron."

Ron shook his head sadly,

"Don't beat yourself up about Zanzibar. It could've happened to the best of Aurors."

He comforted his best friend, whose stern frown turned into a smile,

"We'll hunt her down and throw her into Azkaban where she deserves to be. Better watch out, Professor Umbridge!"

The witch known as Umbridge had crawled out of an upstairs window at the back of the house and dropped down heavily onto a heap of snow in a back alley out of the sight of Muggles. Dusting down her pink robes and black cloak, she looked about furtively, closed her eyes and raised her stubby wand. In an instant she had vanished into thin air and reappeared in a valley nearby, carved out by an iceberg centuries ago. Umbridge looked up and grinned, the resulting smile stretching her toadlike features for she stood before the stone and iron gates of Durmstrang Insitiute, the massive castle loomed overhead as she knocked.

Feed me.

Re: The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

The gates opened with a creak and she swiftly stepped inside, a number of students and staff members milling around on the other side. One rather tall and handsome teacher stepped out from the crowd and bowed,

"My name is Professor Anton Starislov, Headmaster of Durmstrang, and you are?"

"Dolores Jane Umbridge, former senior under-secretary to the British Minister for Magic and Head of the Muggleborn Registration Commission."

Umbridge answered huffily as she divested herself of her cloak and streaked past him into the cold and uninviting castle, Starislov whispered a few words to a nearby student and swiftly followed her inside. He then showed her up to his office,

"Welcome to Durmstrang, Mistress Umbridge. My predecessor as Headmaster thought highly of you and your ground breaking legislation, yet you have said you are the former senior under-secretary, why is that?"

Starislov asked, one eyebrow raised as Umbridge seated herself and looked at him coldy,

"I was unjustly fired by the new Minister, Kingsley Shacklebolt, a few months ago and have been on the run from Aurors ever since. They want to charge me... me with crimes against Muggleborns!"

She spat, her face flushed with anger as she twirled her wand in her hand.

"You can stay here as long as you wish, my dear. We at Durmstrang will protect you as best we can."

Starislov said hurriedly, slightly alarmed at his guest's fury and was relieved when sombebody knocked on the office door,

"Come in, Anya. Don't be shy."

The door opened and the young witch, whom he had spoken to earlier, gingerly walked in,

"Professor, the delivery wizards are on their way to pick up the package you have stored."

"Thank you, dear. Inform them I will be on my way down shortly."

Starislov smiled and Anya withdrew,

"You are welcome to any refreshments you may require, Dolores. I won't be long."

Harry stood up from the fireplace where he had been talking to Anya and rubbed his back,

"She's there. Starislov is expecting us soon."

The fire whooshed upwards and another face could be seen in the flames,

"Hermione! What's going on?"

The newest member of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement stared up at her friend and husband as they knelt close to the fire,

"You have been ordered not to go in as you have an emotional interest in her capture. Other Aurors from the International Confederation Dark Arts Task Force are on their way."

"Who gave the order to prevent us from bringing her in, my love?"

Ron asked, all smiles to see his wife again after so long.

"Minister Shacklebolt and I was ordered to tell you."

Hermione blushed amidst the flames.

(Please feedback me, I'd really love some.)

Re: The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

"But Hermione, this is our first assignment. He can't just let the idiots from the ICW muck up like the last time they tried to bring in a Death Eater or collabrator!"

Harry spluttered, looking mutinous.

"They didn't have you helping them, Harry. Look, I've just been appointed as Interrogator for her trial and all those who suffered under Umbridge will be material witnesses, that includes you."

Hermione said quickly, mortified at her friend's distrust of the international wizarding governing body,

"The International Confederation have been very helpful in the rebuilding of Hogwarts as well as in the rounding up of Death Eaters and supporters of Voldemort. You can't be so angry towards them because they didn't get involved in both wars. It was Britain's war, not theirs."

She looked over at Ron,

"I miss you, sweetheart and please, please be safe out there. I'll see you at home. You too, Harry."

With those words, Hermione's head sunk out of sight and Harry stood up again,

"Let's go meet those ICW dunderheads anyway. I've never worked with any of them before, so lets see how they face one of the worst witches to walk the earth."

He sighed as he signalled Ron to follow him, his friend lost for words but only for a few minutes,

"Harry, are you sure you want to go against Kingsley's orders? He wanted to foster international relations by allowing the ICW get involved with the cleanup."

"You sound just like Hermione sometimes, I've wanted to get Umbridge for a very long time and I'm not letting some dumb Auror get a hold of her and letting her escape like I did."

Harry said with a frustrated tone in his voice as they finally reached the outskirts of the town. Ron remained mute until the moment they Disapparated.

(I'd really love opinions, feeeeeedddddd meeeeeee!)

Re: The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

Starislov and a few of his staff stood at the gates to Durmstrang, waiting patiently for the Aurors who would take his guest back to Britain to stand trial. Unbeknownst to him nor the staff members around him, Umbridge watched from the office window. She gave a great cry as she spotted the massive contigent of Aurors marching ever closer and leapt down from the windowsill, but not before being spotted by a Professor who cried out,

"Look, there she goes!"

Umbridge cursed the ever vigilant teachers under her breath and swiftly made her way to the door. She wrenched it open and stopped dead in her tracks,

"Potter!"

Harry stood there in the doorway with members of the ICW Dark Arts Task Force clustered behind him, a smile upon his lips yet his green eyes cold at the sight of his greatest deractor and former Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher,

"Hello Professor. What a pleasant surprise."

He walked forward, his wand raised as Umbridge backed herself into a wall,

"No! I've done nothing wrong! Tell them I've done nothing wrong!"

The old witch shrieked, her hands covering her face as Harry edged close enough to whisper in her ear,

"I must not tell lies."

These words were enough to send Umbridge into an unspeakable rage, she began to cast hexes, jinxes and curses at her tormentor. Anger seethed from every pore as Harry deflected each one,

"You may have not been a Death Eater but you served them well! If Voldemort knew you had one of his Horcruxes and passed it off as a family heirloom of your own, he would've done more worse things to your person than you or I ever will!"

He shouted, thrusting his left hand in her face. Umbridge visibly blanched at the scars etched into Harry's fist, those she had forced him to inflict upon himself as a punishment. She gave an unearthly scream,

"Crucio!"

Harry howled as the pain ripped though him, this forced the hand of the other Aurors outside and they rushed in, Ron in tow. He stunned the still screaming Umbridge as the others removed her wand and handcuffed her. In the meantime, Harry had fallen to the floor and Ron gently revived him,

"We have her."

He whispered to his friend, who smiled and fainted clean away.

Re: The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

Laughter and cries of jubilation finally brought Harry to his senses. He was propped up in a chair in the Great Hall of Durmstrang, swarms of students, staff and Aurors around him,

"Where's Umbridge!"

Harry cried with alarm, his loud voice made everyone jump. One Auror fought her way through and curtsied low. Her voice, tinged with an American accent, rang out through the Hall,

"Mr. Potter. I am Alexandria Noxia, Head of the ICW Dark Arts Task Force."

She extended a white yet callused hand to Harry, who took it warily. Alexandria laughed,

"I can understand your distrust of the Confederation and my methods in flushing out Voldemort's ilk. Trust me, our tangle in Zanzibar was necessary in lulling the fugitive into a false sense of security. My contacts were correct in assuming that you would disregard Kingsley's orders and come here.”

Harry pulled away,

“What contacts?"

Alexandria inspected him critically and then winked,

"I have my sources within your Department of Magical Law Enforcement, don't you fret, Harry. Umbridge will be delivered to London with nary a scratch on her."

Harry struggled out of the chair,

"As a member of the British Ministry of Magic Auror Office, I'm obliged to accompany you."

Ron stood up too, he had been seated nearby, watching anxiously as this turn of events unfolded. Alexandria sighed and waved her hand irritably at both young wizards,

"Alright then. We leave Durmstrang in an hour via Portkey. I have to make a quick detour to New York to report on the sucess of the mission."

Please leave me feedback.

Re: The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

An hour later, Alexandria, Harry, Ron and the other proud Aurors of the ICW Dark Arts Task Force stood in a Durmstragn courtyard, Umbridge in tow. She was still knocked out and thus was restrained and supported by Harry and Ron.
Alexandria consulted a fob watch suspended from a robe pocket and pulled out a harmonica from another,

"Touch this quickly everyone. We're in for a bumpy ride."

All pressed a finger to the instrument and Harry forced Umbridge's limp hand on it as Alexandria counted down the seconds. The harmonica turned a bright blue and a sudden flash marked their departure. An agonizing few seconds later, the whole party dropped out into the outer entrance of a massive underground complex. Wizards and witches of all nationalities headed inside after being checked out by security wizards or departed via Apparation, Portkey or through rows of fireplaces connected to the International Floo Network.

"Welcome to the International Confederation of Wizards, folks. We are directly underneath the Muggle United Nations complex in New York City."

Alexandria laughed as she beckoned them all inside. Harry and Ron gazed about in wonder and amazement, for the ICW complex was much larger than the Ministry, throngs of people walked to and fro throughout, memos flew over their heads to various destinations and, in the middle of the hall, was a sculpture depicting the signing of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, the defining law of the International Confederation.

"Just you wait there, I shouldn't be long."

The American Auror called over her shoulder as she strode away into the crowd, followed by those under her command. Both young wizards found seats nearby and sat down, but still keeping Umbridge with them,

"Blimey, Harry! Not even Hogwarts is as nice as this place."

Ron said in awe, looking everywhere at once.

"You're right, this is far grander than what we are used to back in London. Let's hope Umbridge doesn't wake up while we are still here."

Harry frowned as he steadied their captive to prevent her from falling over.

Half an hour passed before Alexandria returned on her own. Harry and Ron stood up expectedly as she walked up to them,

"Itching to leave, huh? Right then, Harry and I are leaving by Floo. Ronald, you're taking Mistress Umbridge to London via Side-along Apparation. Come with me."

The young Aurors followed Alexandria out to the the outer entrance and there she stopped in front of one fireplace out of many,

"This one is connected to your Ministry in London. I also have been ordered to testify during the trial, so I am coming with you. Harry, off you go."

Harry hesitated but stepped into the fireplace, grabbing a handful of Floo powder as he did so,

"British Ministry of Magic, London, United Kingdom."

He announced clearly and threw the powder down. Green flames engulfed him and a few minutes later, Harry stepped out into the Ministry entrance hall. Ron was already there, waiting for him and with Umbridge draped over one shoulder. Alexandria had followed close behind, walking out of the same fireplace that Harry had come out of.
A voice rang out from all the noise at their return,

"Thank Merlin you're back!"

Hermione came running up, her mane of bushy brown hair streaming behind her and members of the Magical Law Enforcement Squad following closely behind. They gently relieved Ron of a still unconcious Umbridge and he embraced his wife with a massive smile,

"Mission accomplished!"

Tell me what you think.

Re: The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

"Dolores Jane Umbridge?"

A voice barked. The witch in question jerked awake and found herself restrained to a chair. She looked around in horror at her surroundings, the trial chamber in the Department of Mysteries.

"Trial of the 16th of March into offences committed under the Muggle Protection Act, Usage of Dark Magic Act 1784, Trade Restriction Class A and the Magical Creatures Protection Act 2006 by Dolores Jane Umbridge, resident at 13 High Street, Hogsmeade, The Highlands. Interrogators: Kingsley Martin Shacklebolt, Minister for Magic; Hermione Jean Weasley, Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot; Percy Ignatius Weasley, Senior Undersecretary to the Minister. Court Scribe, Marietta Angela Edgecombe. Witnesses for the Prosecution: Harry James Potter, senior member of the Auror Office; Ronald Billus Weasley, senior member of the same; Ginevra Molly Potter, Chaser for the Holyhead Harpies; Luna Eion Lovegood, magizoologist; Neville Franklin Longbottom, Professor of Herbolgy at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, George Septimus Weasley, founder and CEO of Weasley's Wizard Wheezes and Alexandria Mary Noxia, Head of the International Confederation of Wizards Dark Arts Task Force."

The Minister announced, glaring down his nose at the accused, who shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

"The charges against the accused are as follows: That she willingly participated in the persecution of muggleborn and half-blood wizards and witches along with magical creatures, performed acts of cruelty and magical torture against students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and other undeserving members of the magical community, use of the Unforgivable Curses, use of magic with malicious intent to cause harm, consparicy, possesion of illegal magical artifacts and illegal use of magical substances. All which constitute offences under the laws cited previously. You are Dolores Jane Umbridge of number 13, High Street, Hogsmeade, the Highlands, correct?"

Kingsley growled, shuffling the papers on the podium in front of him.

"Yes."

Umbridge squeaked as she shrunk into her seat, wishing that she wasn't there. The Wizengamot watched her squirm, some members watched with delight, others with scorn.

"You were aware of the lawlessness of your actions, yet firmly believed that they were for the good of this Ministry and its constituents, both good and evil?"

"Yes!"

She squeaked again, her eyes now closed to all around her. Another now spoke,

"We've heard all that we need to hear from Dolores, Minister. Shall I call the first witness?"

Umbridge opened her eyes and gripped the armrests of the chair as Kingsley nodded his approval. Hermione then stood up, for it was she who had spoken, and raised her wand to her throat,

"Harry James Potter, you may enter and give evidence."

Her voice echoed around the chamber and the doors swung wide.

What do you think so far?

Re: The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

Harry strode through the open doors, resplendent in robes of the darkest purple edged with gold. Umbridge was hustled out of the chair by two Aurors and removed to the side of the room where she was to be kept on guard,

"How long have I been asleep for?"

She asked one of her guards, who glared at her for a moment but then gave an evil grin,

"Seven years, ducky. Seven years you've been in a magic induced sleep. Now keep your mouth shut or I'll shut it for you."

The Auror growled and Umbridge was struck dumb with fear and shock. Her mind boggled at the thought that it had taken so long to organise her trial. By now Harry had sat down and arranged his robes around him, waiting to give his evidence.

"You are Harry James Potter of Number 12. Grimmauld Place, London, correct?"

Hermione asked in a clear voice.

"Yes."

He answered steadily, gazing at his friend with a smile.

"Can you give us your version of events from the trial that took place in this very room when you were fifteen right up until your last encounter with Mistress Umbridge eight years previously?"

"I can."

Harry looked around at the accused and she blanched in fright, then he turned and began speaking,

"As many of you will know, and I'm sure some here will have been present at the time, I was charged with using magic in front of Muggles, namely my cousin Dudley Dursley, in direct violation of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy and other laws designed to prevent Muggle knowledge of our existance, but only to save my undeserving relative from wandering Dementors. The accused, Dolores Umbridge, was on the Wizengamot and, as we discovered later, she had sent the Dementors to frame me. Because,"

He raised his wand to his head and then pressed the tip to his lips. Harry took the wand away and began to speak again, this time in a breathy, female voice,

"Somebody had to act. They were all bleating about silencing you somehow - discrediting you - but I was the one who actually did something about it... only you wriggled out of that one, didn't you, Potter? Not today though, not now-"

Umbridge shrieked from behind her guards,

"Lies, all lies!"

They quicky subdued her and Hermione nodded at Harry, prompting him to go on with his story. He went on, this time in his normal voice,

"The very moment that she revealed that to me, she attempted to use the Cruciatus curse to punish me, even though it was, and still is, an offence punishable by life imprisonment in Azkaban. Yet Umbridge was creative with punishment, using blood quills and Veritaserum on hapless students, restricting many freedoms by forcing through many Inquistorial decrees, one after the other. All designed to keep both students and staff at Hogwarts down and clueless about what was going on in the world outside the castle walls, just to keep me quiet about Voldemort's return!"

Harry said this last part loudly, causing a few of the old Wizengamot elders to jump at Voldemort's name.

"This was all planned between herself and Cornelius Fudge, Minister Shacklebolt's predecessor. Fudge refused to believe me and Professor Dumbledore, the late Headmaster of Hogwarts, and was paranoid enough to think that Dumbledore wanted to overthrow him and take his place as Minister, to the point he had the Defence aganist the Dark Arts subject restricted to theoretical learning and usage. For Fudge feared that students were being raised to form a secret army to be used in a coup against his administration. He was wrong."

"Can we have a recess, Minister? There is so much other evidence to be given that it can't all be in a single day."

Hermione asked.

"Indeed, Mrs. Weasley. We shall have a 3 hour recess, the trial will resume at 6 this evening."

The Minister called out, slamming the hammer down several times.

Umbridge wants feedback on her teaching methods.

Re: The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

3 hours passed like eternity. Umbridge had been left in the courtroom, watched over by her Auror guards until the recess was up. She sat with her face in her hands, dreading what would come next.
10 minutes later, the Wizengamot began to file into their places on the benches and Harry sat himself down onto the chair.

"You came across the accused again during your hunt for Voldemort's Horcruxes, tell the court of your experiences at the time."

Hermione spoke once more, her eyes flickered over to Umbridge as she said this.

"My friends and I had to infiltrate the Ministry of the time to retrieve a Horcrux, a locket that Umbridge had bought off a seedy wizard salesman known as Mundungus Fletcher. The powers of that locket were numerous and were somewhat boosted by the fragment of soul within, it is able to make the wearer feel euphoric and happy or drag them into the depths of despair, cause them to question everything in life and make them think the worst. My friend and fellow Auror Ronald Weasley has had first hand experience of this."

He paused for a moment, remembering the horrific images that had sprung from the locket only to torture Ron before it was destroyed.

"It affected Umbridge enough for her to be able to conjure a Patronus amongst the gloom and sadness that only Dementors could bring and gave her the impetus to persecute half-bloods and Muggleborns as was required under the Voldemort/Thicknesse regime. I, under the guise of the wizard Albert Runcorn and an Invisibility cloak, stunned her during a mock trial and took the locket from around her neck. That was the last we ever saw of her, until we were put on assignment for her capture."

Kingsley nodded at the Chief Warlock and she smiled,

"Thank you, Mr. Potter. The next witness is Ronald Billius Weasley, you may enter."

Harry stood up and left the room, but not before glaring at Umbridge once more.

Re: The Trial of Dolores Umbridge.

Ron, in robes of deep blue, walked steadily through the open doors and winked at his wife as he sat down. Hermione blushed slightly as she removed a paper from the pile before her and coughed to clear her throat,

"You are Ronald Bilius Weasley of No. 6. Diagon Alley, London, correct?"

"Yes."

The grizzled Auror grinned widely.

“What can you tell us of Madame Umbridge’s actions during her time as Defence against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts and when you next came upon her?”

The look on Ron’s face faded from a smile to a worried frown as he thought back,

“I was not persecuted by her unduly, for I never gave her the chance until the D.A. was discovered. But her hatred of Harry was enough to make those who believed his words to hate Umbridge just as much. When I saw her again, eight years earlier, I was in the Polyjuice induced guise of Reginald Cattermole, whose wife Mary was on trial for being Muggleborn. Mary latched onto me, thinking I was her husband. I helped the entire Cattermole family to escape and the last I saw of the accused until now was her unconscious body slumped across the balustrade as my wife fumbled for the Locket-Horcrux.”

“Thank you, Mr. Weasley. You may go.”

Kingsley boomed.
