So is there anyone else who are from Finland or are just able to speak finnish?

During the years I've been able to recognize less than twenty (or so I think) active members from Finland. Usually they don't stay active for long.

Your keyboard doesn't by any chance have a key with ¨ ? I use that key to produce ü.

Mä is talk language. As written it is minä. As olen is in first person singularis you can leave it out. For studying I would recommend another tempus.

Then you could have:
(Minä)olen kotoisin Bulgariasta, mutta [don't repeat 'minä here] olen opiskellut neljä kuukautta Jyväskylässä.

Btw. Opiskelin goes with one l only.

That's close to Estonian here. Mina olen = I am, but one usually says Ma olen only or, in talk language, leaves it out sometimes. *provides information nobody needs*

Funny story my friend actually experienced when she went into Czech Rebublic... her teacher said that people find it hard language to learn because they have what seven cases for nouns. Others where horrified, but she yelled yay. People were looking at her like she was insane and she had to explain that we have around fifteen cases for nouns, so the count dropped around 50%. Then they understood.

Tervehdys kaikille. Asuin Suomessa seitsemän vuotta, muutimme sinne kun olin vain kaksi vuotta vanha enkä muista melkein mitään sitä ennen. Veljeni syntyi jo Suomessa, ja ehdin käydä (maailman parasta) päiväkotia ja sitten vielä kolme vuotta koulua ennen kun muutimme Ruotsiin. Nyt suomen kieli alkaa valitettavasti unohtua kun ei ole mahdollisuutta käyttää sitä. Toivottavasti saan vähän harjoittelua täällä.

Basically what I said above is that I'm here but not very active. About Finnish and Estonian they are very close to each other but I can't really undestand it.. Especially spoken Estonian is waaay out there. In my experience Estonian people understand Finnish much better than we do them. :P

Hi! I hope this is the right place to post this, and that this forum has any Finns (or others) who can answer my questions. You see, I read a cartoon in an old Norwegian Donald Duck comic, written and drawn by the awesome Don Rosa. His cartoons are often based on facts or legends from the real world, and this time it was The Quest for Kalevala. Then, I found a few words and names I was curious about, so:

- What does Tuoni mean?

- What is Sampo?

- I've heard about Kalevala before, I know that Tolkien got a few ideas for Silmarillion from the Kalevala poem, and I'm interested in reading it. Do you know if it exists any translations (preferably in Norwegian, but English is okay too) of Kalevala?

- Who is Iku-Turso?

Tuoni and Iku-Turso might be invented, I have no idea because I haven't read the whole cartoon, only the middle bit. ("To be continued in the next issue" Unfortunately, I didn't have the issue with the first or the last part of the story. )Also, if you know anywhere I could read the whole cartoon on the internet, I would be very, very greateful.

I've no clue about Finnish (but we have a few Finns here so maybe one of them will see your posts later), but I'm almost sure Kalevala was translated in many languages. I read the Estonian version of it in German once (Estonia uses the almost same myth) and know that this one is translated in many languages.

Perhaps check out for John Martin Crawford (English translator) or directly for Elias Lönnrot (the one who collected the Finnish poems).

Tuoni is the god of the underworld (Tuonela).
Sampo was a magical thing, but what exactly is maybe unclear.
Iki- Turso is a sea monster.
