What are Nargles, anyway?

Okay, so throughout the series, Luna came up with all these crazy ideas. The Blibbering Humdinger, Crumple-Horned Snorcack, Heliopaths, etc. Heliopaths are spirits of fire, and the first two are creatures her Dad "discovered." But she always comes back to Nargles at some point.

We're never told what Nargles are, but she blames stuff on them and they appear in mistletoe. If I had to guess, I would say that they were some sort of Magical fungus or something, but seeing that Luna came up with them there's probably some hidden property.

Thoughts?

I have no idea, but I always thought they were some sort of i dont know, bug or creature. There is most likely some kind of magical property about them, but I have absolutely no idea what.

Re: What are Nargles, anyway?

I always imagined them as some sort of fly, or flea, or no-see-um - Luna describes them as buzzing around people's heads, I think, and at one point she waves her arms around her head to ward them off like a Muggle would do to shoo flies. Such small bugs could also quite easily have a nest in a ball of mistletoe.

But I like the bird connection, X_luna_x.

Re: What are Nargles, anyway?

I always got nargles and wrackspurt confused. Do Nargles fly? since i thought that was wrackspurt, buzzing around people's head and making their brains go fuzzy. I do like the bird connection, but i guess I always saw wrackspurt as that instead of nargles. Nargles i always saw as some sort of flying insect kind of thing.

It's only in the movies that Luna always comes back to Nargles. In the books, they are only mentioned the one time in the Room of Requirement when Harry and Luna are under the mistletoe.

The animal that was buzzing around people's heads that she was trying to beat off with her arms was a Wrackspurt as ignisia said.

Personally, I think that nargles are kind of like a gnat or some other small, flying bug that live in mistletoe.

Didn't she say they hid in the Mistletoe? If that is what she said, they would have to be fairly small...

Yeah, Wrackspurts are probably flies or fleas or whatever... or moths.

Nargles might be bugs too... or small birds.

Re: What are Nargles, anyway?

There was one thing that Luna could see that most other children could not ... Thestrils. One thing she believed in that others didn't: Harry. But, aside from that, Luna was more often "original" than "correct." There were great many beasties and critters that she and her dad believe in, that no other witch or wizard has ever saw.

So, when I heard the announcement that Luna grew up to be a Naturalist ...

Quote:
After leaving Hogwarts, Luna went on to become a very famous wizarding naturalist, studying new species of creatures and marrying a fellow naturalist, named Rolf, a grandson of the great Newt Scamander, and had twin boys named Lorcan and Lysander (BLC, YL).http://www.hp-lexicon.org/wizards/luna.html
I was, to say the least, puzzled.

I thought they were small bug kind of things, that could fly. I didn't ever really have a clear image in my head. I just checked Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them but there wasn't anything in there. Perhaps The Scottish Book will reveal some information

Re: What are Nargles, anyway?

I always thought of Nargles as some sort of little spirits. For instance, Luna blames spacey-headedness on them and she waves her arms around in order to get rid of them. So, if not spirits, I'd expect something else that can fly through the air (maybe bugs, like LoonyMagic said).

That's Wrackspurts, actually. According to Luna, Wrackspurts are the little bugs that fly around you and cloud up your brain. Nargles live in mistletoe. I always imagined them as some sort of bug, too.

I always pictured them as some kind of magical bug or insect that had a certain significant magical power to them.

Re: What are Nargles, anyway?

I imagined nargles more as something along the lines of doxies, fairies, or some other small, vaguely humanoid nesting critter. Visible, but good at hiding. Luna never said what they do, but they must be somewhat dangerous, as it seemed to her a sensible thing to jump away from their potential habitat. Many people seem to be getting them confused with wrackspurts, which are invisible, fly, and cause confusion. It is wrackspurts Luna attempts to ward off by flapping her arms over her head. Nargles are only mentioned in reference to the (probably infested) mistletoe in the Room of Requirement.

You mean to tell me that it's not Nargles that steal the socks out of my dryer so that I don't have a pair?

Have to disagree with you there, mate. I find the evidence for the existence of wrackspurts quite compelling. Many people seem to be affected by them, though I think logic is a better defense against them than arm-waving. Sadly, many people never discover this simple expedient.
