Grappig; ik ben ook een beetje een taalpurist. Maar dan ook weer niet.
Ik geef om taal, en zowel de Nederlandse als de Engelse kan ik vrij perfekt schrijven en spreken. Dat doe ik dan ook, vind ik belangrijk. Ik probeer mijzelf altijd heel nauwkeurig te verwoorden, zeg maar. Het is toch een soort visitekaartje, en daarom vind ik straattaal, sms-taal en al die dingen meer een beetje vervelend en om eerlijk te zijn, een beetje beneden mijn waardigheid. Je kan je mening zoveel meer elan geven door het niet alleen korrekt maar ook mooi aangekleed te presenteren.

Dat de Nederlandse taal ooit zal vergaan, dát kan me dan weer geen ene zak schelen. De wereld wordt wereldser, alles wordt internationaal, interkultureel, en straks zijn we weer allemaal mens. Allemaal "aardling", in plaats van Nederlander of Belg (of erger nog, Nederlander, Vlaming of Waal) of Marokkaan of Rus of Amerikaan. Zo hoort het ook. Nationaliteiten, dat verdeelt ons alleen maar. En de verdwijning van talen, ook "de onze", dat is maar een klein offer. (Overigens spreek ik geen Esperanto. :P)
Bovendien vind ik Nederlands dus echt gewoon naar. Niet alleen moeilijk en hier en daar ronduit onlogisch, maar gewoon bot, boers, onvriendelijk, onelegant. Bah. Nare taal. Maar toch hou ook ik er wel een beetje van. Het blijft je moerstaal, en hoewel ik me inmiddels waarschijnlijk nog wel iets eloquenter kan verwoorden in het Engels, blijft Nederlands toch de taal waarin mijn gevoelens het meest intens, het meest gemeend in kunnen worden geuit.
Tegenstrijdig hieraan heb ik nogal eens de neiging uit te schieten in mijn Nederlands-traditionalisme door Anglicismen etc. zo Nederlands mogelijk te spellen ("diskussie", "ekskuses" en "mijn inboks tsjekken")

Tja, ik kan mijn taalpurisme aan de ene kant en mijn taal-defaitisme (in de oude zin van het woord) ook niet helemaal met elkaar rijmen. Gevoelskwestie.

Hello! I'm trying to learn Dutch at the moment, as my boyfriend is Dutch. I've been with him four years so I think I should try a bit harder really, but I'm terrible at learning new languages...

I can remember all the words, but not the order they're meant to go into


EDIT: Oh, and, as an English person, I think Dutch looks slightly Germanic, but also, I see the similarities to some English words. I find the G's and R's quite difficult.

Dat is wel zo'n beetje de bedoeling, maar we hebben niet zoveel gegadigden voor het leren van Nederlands. Niet echt een verrasing

Dus is het meer een ontmoetingsplek voor de Nederlanders on site geworden.

Maar iedereen die Nederlands wil leren is welkom

Slecht, die namen voelen altijd zo raar aan. Daarom lees ik eigenlijk altijd de engelse boeken. Aan de andere kant, tis maar wat je gewend bent. Sommige namen klinken ook zo raar....

Jaa ik vind het ook maar raar, vooral als ik dan de films kijk, dan moet ik soms zelfs nog nadenken wie dat ook al weer was. Ik heb namelijk de Engelse boeken niet, ik zou ook niet weten hoe ik er aan moet komen, in het kleine stadje waar ik woon hebben ze ze nergens te koop, en wil ik ze bij de bieb lenen moet ik ook naar een andere stad. Ik heb deel 1-4 voor het eerst in het Nederlands gelezen en de delen 5-7 allemaal in het Engels. De Nederlandse haalde ik dan later in de bieb. Dus ja, van deel 1-4 ken ik de Nederlandse termen redelijk goed, maar van de latere delen wordt het toch wat lastig...

Ik vind ze meestal wel goed gevonden. Ze geven de boeken soms wel een beetje een kinderlijkere uitstraling, maar hij weet de termen wel het juiste 'gevoel' mee te geven. Zwerkbal klinkt voor een Nederlander toch magischer dan 'Quidditch' - of neem bijv. 'Glamorgana' - dat klinkt toch beter dan 'Veela' in 't Nederlands.
Vooral ook omdat Wiebe niet alleen iets raars verzint maar ook er ook gewoon woordgrapjes in stopt ( Little Hangleton - Havermout en Great Hangleton - Musley, dat is gewoon humor). Of hij maakt het herkenbaarder voor een Nederlander - sophorous bean (wat in de Draught of Living Death gaat) naar 'sodejusboon' - klinkt bijna hetzelfde, maar is wel herkenbaarder. (en heeft ook nog de connectie naar 'juice' of jus).

Natuurlijk, sommige dingen vind ik gewoon niet passen (Heer Pechtol voor Sir Luckless?) en lang niet alles is goed, maar ik vind het persoonlijk beter dan een Nederlands boek vol met Engelse (klinkende) woorden. Overigens lees ik dus wel liever de Engelse boeken, maar met het Nederlands is ook niets mis...

I think that they are usually quite original. Sometimes they give the books a more 'childish' tone but he does succeed in giving the word the correct feeling. Or he adjusts the words to make them more understandable to a Dutch person - he translates 'sophorous bean' (the bean that's put into the Draught of the Living Death) to 'sodejusboon' (a Dutch word to express astonishment) - it sounds alike but it is easier to 'recognize'. (it also has a connection with the word 'juice' or 'jus' (gravy).))

Of course, some things just don't fit (Heer Pechtol (the Dutch minister for Education and Culture is names mr. PechtolD - I don't think it's a coincidence...) for Sir Luckless) and not everything is perfect, but I still think that it's better than a Dutch book filled with English (sounding) words. By the way, I do prefer to read the book in English, but there is nothing wrong with the Dutch ones - though the translations DO get worse as the series progresses. They shouldn've have set him a deadline! Look at the Japanese books, as far as I know, the translator isn't set a deadline and that translation is better most other Eastern language versions...
