spiderwick chronicles
I search and didn't find similar topic.
What do you guys thought of this movie? Do you hate it or liked it? I seen it not expecting anything and it turned out to be a good movie. I enjoyed it way better then ootp. I haven't read the books it based on, so I had no idea what it was going to be about other then it was fantacy gener movie. freddie highmore did good job playing both twins I thought. Its also holding up good in the box office, and got good reviews. Not having any other family movie out there helps I'm sure. First good movie for 2008 for me. |

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I haven't seen it yet, but I'm intending on watching it. I've read random bits of the series and have enjoyed what I read. Also, I love Freddie Highmore - he's a great little actor and I think from past performances he should be good in this one

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I havent seen it yet, nor have I read the books. I'm really curious into what it is about though because we have the toys at McD's and they are very curious and puzzling.
I want to go see it just to make sense of what these strange toys are about

Re: spiderwick chronicles
gipro that sounds like that Simpsons episode where all the corporate executives organise the toys all that before they think of what the movie will be about.

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I read the books. IMO they're a rip-off of quite a few fantasy books. The movie looked very cheesy, and even though Mugglenet is turning into a Spiderwick fansite I'm not planning on seeing the movies.

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I'll probably hire them out when they're released on DVD, but since I haven't read the books and I wasn't that impresseed with the trailers there is no way I'm paying $15 at the cinema.

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I went to the Cinema to watch it, only knowing that it was a fantasy that contained werd creatures, but it turned out to be tone of the best childrens films i had seen.

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I really enjoyed this film, I didn't expect to like it so much but all the family went to the cinema for Easter and this was the one we chose. It's not particularly original, but what films are nowadays? I liked all the kids, which is unusual for me and I just loved the flower fairy thingies

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I saw the movie, and it was better than I expected. Even my twenty-year-old brother liked it. Freddie Highmore does a great job. For those of you who haven't seen it, I suggest you give it a try; I think it's actually pretty good.
My favorite line is Spoiler: show

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I went the other day to see it as it was cold and snowing and there wasn't much else to do. I didn't think that much of it, it was watchable but I wouldn't see it again in a hurry! My two little cousins seemed to like it a lot though so maybe it's more for younger children. I thought the bit where they ride on the griffin was copying Harry Potter a bit though

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I`m not too sure about this, but a few years ago now I read an interview with an author saying he`d written a series for children andit contained monsters such as hippogriffs, boggarts and goblins, and i`ve a feeling it was the author of the Spiderwick Chronicles. Back then I thought the guy had a real nerve to not just rip HP off, but to even use the same mystical creatures! I doubt i`ll read the books or even bother with the films. It smacks of cash in, to me.

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I kind of liked it. I reminded me of Bridge to Terribithia in some ways because they find a magical world full of strange creatures. I thought the movie was really close to the book as well. The thing I thought was strange though was when Arthur Spiderwick was hugging his daughter. His daughter was probally older than he was! I thought was great though that they got to be reunited.

Re: spiderwick chronicles
I missed the movie in theaters but saw it on DVD--the next day, I returned my rented DVD and bought my own copy. I really liked the movie--Freddie Highmore does an amazing acting job playing twins. Even though they're the same person, Jared and Simon have different speaking styles, very different personalities, and a different look about them--this is no "parent trap" type twin portrayal where the twins really do seem to meld into two halves of the whole. Simon and Jared are very distinctive, and that's a credit to Highmore's acting. The twins' sister Mallory, played by Sarah Bolger, is a strong character that girls can relate to and be happy she's no shrinking violet who needs to be saved by her brothers. The actors do a good job of both the 'ooh and ahh' acting when the magical stuff is revealed and the "real world" acting showing the family's interactions, dramas, etc. The main plot of the movie is not, after all, that they discover this magical world--it's about the healing of two families, the Spiderwyck family and the Grace family, who had both been through significant trauma. The movie's use of magical creatures is interesting, although it doesn't explain why, if there's a malevolent ogre out there, he doesn't come into town and rip things up there--the reason, reading between the lines, is the regulation of the magical world by those fairies that took Spiderwyck prevents Mulgarath from acting, which is why he wants to get the book and learn how to destroy those fairies so he is no longer restrained. I don't know if that's made clear enough in the movie, though. I've never read the books, so I can't talk about how faithful or not the film is to the stories, but overall, I thought it was a well-made, excellently acted, enjoyable film.
