I finally read it, and to be completely honest, it was a bit disappointing. The way everyone was ranting about it, I was expecting better. It was that funny either, elvendork waSnt that creative.

Yea I can understand where you are coming from on that. It could have been better, but still it's better than nothing and it was fun to read .

Haha, that made me laugh. I'm not the biggest James and Sirius fans, but JK is a really witty writer so she could write about almost ANYTHING potter related and I'd read it. Something about Harry, Ron & Hermy post-voldy to detox that terrible epilogue might have been nicer, though.

Yea it would be nice. But I didn't consider the epilogue to be terrible... it wasn't as good as the rest of book 7, but it wasn't that bad overall .

Re: Rowling pens Potter prequel to benefit charity

In the poll I voted for:

Awesome!!!
Elvendork... brilliant!
I want to know why Sirius and James were being chased!
I want that T-shirt!
I WANT THE REST OF THE PREQUEL!!!!! (that she's not writing)
Other - post in thread.

The other was because there wasn't an option like, "Sirius and James! SQUEEE!" or "I want a layabout boyfriend!"

Naturally I'd pop in this thread as soon as I read the prequel. Actually, I read the Mugglenet post about it appearing at 10 pm incorrectly; I thought it said 11 pm. When I saw that it was at 10 pm I went crazy knowing that I wasted 30 min. doing nothing.

As a fangirl of James and Sirius, I'd be thrilled if she wrote it!

There's a piece of fanart I saw that has this situation.

That's what I thought as well. I thought the Order would want to be inconspicuous about their membership with the Order, but I guess that wasn't the case with James and Sirius. I always thought that James and Sirius were the people that would wear their hearts on their sleeves, and this doesn't surprise me that they wore shirts that had a golden phoenix on it. (Assuming, of course, that the bird does symbolize the phoenix.) I imagine that James and Sirius were proud to be members of the Order and were willing to let others know that, regardless of the danger they would have been due to that.

Amen! A lot of people have pointed out that the Marauders lived life to the fullest and enjoyed every minute of it, and this prequel further deepens my belief in that. The prequel showed that despite the amount of danger they were in, they didn't fail to make the best of it. They could still find humor in such a dangerous situation. Could my love for them grow any more than it already has?

I agree. Her story was designed to fill only both sides of a card. She couldn't have written anything that was really deep or something with an intense plot. She had a limited amount of words to write, so she wrote something light hearted and fun. I enjoyed it anyway, so I have no problem with it.

It bothers me that both boys seem to consider this a game or a joke. There is little to no gravity in their dialogue.
Just because they were making jokes does not, IMO, mean that they didn't grasp the seriousness of the situation they were in. Everyone responds to situations in a different way, and with James and Sirius, they had humor. Fred and George did the same when they were fighting against the Death Eaters in the Battle at Hogwarts. When the trio were in danger from being killed by Fiend Fyre, Ron made a joke when he yelled, "IF WE DIE FOR THEM, HARRY, I'LL KILL YOU!" I don't think it means they didn't mature or that they weren't intelligent enough to understand that they were inches from death. It just means that they responded to serious situations through humor, which I don't think is bad. After all, they do say that laughter is the best medicine.

Oooh a poll! Well, although I did love it, I would prefer it if JKR wrote this story or even just this little snippet of what was on that piece of card and wrote it properly. That would be awesome, because I couldn't really get into it with the way it was written. But I know that it's very doubtful that she would ever do that .

Not that much, no. But I did escape being a fashion conscience teenager during the 70's!

Unfortunately, that didn't save me from all the elementary school pictures - but my mother made me wear those clothes because it was picture day! *shudder*

Truly frightening. I have a picture of my parents where my father is wearing the most horrid shirt - huge collar, bright colors, hideous pattern, and I don't even wanna know what the material was!

I do have this mental image now. Deathly Hallows. August, 1997. #12 Grimmauld Place. After inspecting the bikini posters and finding Lily's letter and the torn photograph, Harry investigates the wardrobe and finds Sirius' complete Saturday Night Fever ensemble!

Poor Harry. I think he had enough to deal with without seeing that!

Well, that depends on the image though. The policeman also thought it was probably an emblem for a rock band so it doesn't sound like it was a picture of a bird - like photograph - so much as a drawing. So it could have been something like this -

or even one of these -

It would be incredibly humorous if the golden bird was, indeed, a Snidget (made to seem larger on the T-shirt). I could easily see James and Sirius wear something emblazoned with something so cute, simply to bolster their own arrogance. Perhaps the back read, "Save the Snidgets"?
That would be funny! And I could see James and Sirius doing something like that. I still think it was supposed to be a phoenix though.

That's what the "other" option is for.

Well, that didn't take long! But that is exactly what I was thinking too!

Exactly.

As I said before, the change in their attitude when the three men on broomsticks show up is telling. They were being lighthearted and joking around, but instantly went on the alert - they were prepared. And they protected the innocent muggles so they didn't get hurt or killed. That was cool. There's nothing wrong with joking around as long as you keep your focus.

My only thought when I read it was, "Wow, Jo wrote a fanfiction!" lol, though I guess if she writes it, then it's technically not fanfiction but that's still what it felt like.

It was all right. Interesting, but not enough there to tell what was really happening. *shrug* Nice but not over the moon about it pretty well summed up my feeling on it.

Re: Rowling pens Potter prequel to benefit charity

I was always in love with Sirius and James, but after reading the prequel, my love for them has grown so exponentially. Everything about them- the motorbike, the matching T-shirts, the witty jokes, the thirst for danger, the good looks makes me want to scream. I am literally dying to know more about James and Sirius. I really hope writing this 800 word excerpt convinces JK Rowling to write more about them.

I initially felt that way about the Epilogue.

Which eventually I became reconciled to. I quite like it now.

It always had some redeeming features, of course. (See sig. )

Since I'm always writing snippets of things, I found it easy to get into those 800 words. It was such a vividly written little ficlet.

Ha, she says she's never going to write a prequel. Says she. Go on, Jo: "Unfinished Tales of Potterverse", you know you want to.

I have a theory that in a few years, Jo will get so sad about leaving Potter behind that she'll write this prequel out for fun, you know. And then some hurricane or whatever will strike, as per usual, and charities will be desperately needing money, and Jo will think "Well, there's a good cause in great need and I've got this finished Harry Potter book that would make millions of dollars, no doubt. What to do?" And in a fit of pure genius she'll put two and two together and get it published and we'll all rejoice and the world will be merry once more.

Can you tell I'm desperate at this point? I NEED MORE HP. =(

I agree. I don't think the problem was ever with the epilogue itself. The problem was with the previous chapter because it cut off too abruptly. A few more pages or even another chapter before the epilogue to wrap things up a bit better would have been good.

I really enjoyed that.

She does come across as someone who really wants to write more about it all. I think it is possible that she will eventually give in to the urge. I hope this idea nags at her until she absolutely has to write it all out.

But, you know, I would love something like "Unfinished Tales of the Potterverse" as well. A collection of short stories - missing moments from the series, short stories about the previous generation and the future generation - that would be very good as well. It doesn't necessarily have to be a complete novel following one story. Short stories about certain characters would be just as satisfying for me.

So I'll gladly join in the peer pressure. Come on Jo! You know you want to.

The Order has T-shirts. I laughed so hard at that.

So did anyone get why they ran away at the end...? I guess we're not supposed to? They obviously weren't in that much of a hurry or they wouldn't have had time to yell cheeky things at the policemen.

I picked 'Other - explain in thread', and therefore would like to ask why there is no option 'I don't like it'? Because I don't, plain and simple.
