There should be something like that in the actual link to the table -- the top of the page in LJ where the entries are all listed..

Favorite: 15, love the overall idea and execution of the image!

Voting off: 8, I just do not understand at all where the map comes into play with this.

Re: Non-HP LIMS: VOTING OPEN!

Wow, these are amazing!

1: I love this icon! I would have liked the pin to have a bit more contrast with the background, but the shadow and edging are really fantastic.

2: I really like the boat that floats across, but I'm not to crazy about the background.

3: I love this one, too. It looks like a great section from an old map.

4: I'm sorry, but I can't tell what that is.

5: This is another great icon. The image, background, text, and coloring just seem to go together very nicely.

6: This is a very pretty icon. I like the boats and the text and font, but I'm not crazy about the odd splashes of color at the bottom.

7: I love this one, too! Just using black and white with a small section of a map and an animated ship is really cool. I love the details in the ship itself.

8: I'm sorry but I'm not sure what this is, either, and I can't read the text. Of course it might be just an effect that you are supposed to see text but not be able to read it so in that case just ignore what I said.

9: This is a nice icon. I like the picture but think the text should be a bit more crisp.

10: This is a nice icon. The images work well together and the coloring is nice.

11: I love this one, too! It's a nice section of a map that works well in the space of an icon and the ship is real nice - and the animation is cool.

12: This is a very nice one, too. I really like the border around the ship with latitute and longitude lines behind it and the text underneath - font and all - is really nice. It goes together well.

13: This one is very pretty. I like the text and font that goes with the images.

14: The background and foreground look really nice together. I like the text, but the second font is a bit hard to read.

15: This is a nice image and the background and upper right corner pattern go really well with it. I like the fonts, too - they seem to go with it as well.

favorites: 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, and 12

voting off: 4 (Sorry!)

Re: Non-HP LIMS: VOTING OPEN!

Wow, we all have really great imaginations to come up with all these different icons from a bunch of maps. to everyone even if you get voted off! You will not be voted off for a lack of imagination, I can tell you that!

1. The pin and the border is a distraction. I like the brightness of the colors in the map.

4. It's hard to focus on what I'm looking at in the image. It's bright and I do like the color used, but it's hard to tell what I'm looking at.

5. Great idea. I like the text.

7. Great animation. I like that it is not straight. It really looks like the ship is sailing across the map. It's not too busy.

9. The text is kind of hard to read. The images used, though, are good. I like them. I like this icon, except for the text. Either lose the text or make it a little darker so it is more readable.

12. It's very simple to look at. I like that in an icon. Everything blends well together and looks like it's been there since the beginning. It really is "Oceanus."

Favs: 5, 7, & 12

8: I think it has potential and the colors mesh well together but it doesn't say history to me. I admire that you took a chance though and in another circumstance it might have worked well

Re: Non-HP LIMS: VOTING OPEN!

my vote goes to #1. sorry...
1. the idea of the pin is interesting, but i would like to see a more realistic pin there. i like the smooth pink tones on the land, but the coloring in the see is odd. it's too bright and it clashes with the rest of the image. i would suggest to treat the see separately toning down the brightness and the saturation.

faves: 14, 13, 8, 6.

i think Alice meant the actual specifications for the challenge. i too had to go back in the thread to be sure about what was asked. i was confused because many people said some icons were not about the maps....

Navigating Your Way

Ah, ok.

Honestly, I had planned for days to make this a text icon -- it took a while to get all the quotes together. When I saw the GC and LIMS topics go up, I was half thrilled (you know me and text icons... we're like *this* ) and half despairing, thinking of all the work I put into it, and wondering how many people would be upset about it.

But I am allowing images in this one, as long as the 5-word minimum is there... see? Much more user-friendly than I could have been...

I'm terribly upset about it. How could you do this, Kim?

Just kidding! I think it's cool. Your's is different because we are allowed images as long as they aren't the focus. In that other one they aren't allowed images at all, I don't think.

Oh, I have a question. Do we have to acknowledge the speaker of the quote in our banner if we do not use the entire quote?

8. It's very well made, I just don't see where navigation comes to play. Also, the textures are rather unclear and i don't really get the string things coming from the girl's hands.

You don't have to include the speaker if you don't want to -- since I am not requiring it for my classes, at least

11. I think there was some good potential for animated icons given the map material. But this one fell short, in my opinion. Compositionally it didn't work for me to have the ship squashed into the corner (though I give it credit for finding a navigable passage). Additionally in contrast to the other two animated icons, the ship wasn't very well integrated into the background.

VOTING RESULTS, WEEK ONE
PLUS WEEK TWO TOPIC

Today we say goodbye to the maker of the following icon:

WEEK 2 TOPIC
Banner Week for Space Travel
In honor of the Endeavour's successful launch, this week's topic is a special one (you can see the launches from my house).
SIZE: Banner
TECHNIQUE/RESTRICTIONS: You will use one of the quotes I have linked, and you must use at least 5 consecutive words from one of them. Attribution of the speaker does not count towards your 5 consecutive word minimum. You may use images if you wish, as long as the text is the focus, and it is legible (no tiny text in which the quote is next to impossible to read). Animation is ok, and so is image use.

Quotes on Space Travel:

  • What fiction could match - in drama or suspense - man's first walk on the Moon? -- Leonard Nimoy, Mr. Spock of "Star Trek."
  • And now 'tis man who dares assault the sky...And as we come to claim our promised place, aim only to repay the good you gave, And warm with human love the chill of space." -- Prof. Thomas G. Bergin, Yale University (From a poem titled "Space Prober," the first poem to be launched into orbit about the Earth.)
  • ...space is for everybody. It's not just for a few people in science or math, or for a select group of astronauts. That's our new frontier out there, and it's everybody's business to know about space. -- Christa McAuliffe, December 6, 1985
  • Some day people will travel to Mars. It will be a long trip, but fun. This will be a big step for mankind. We would be able to find out if there was life on this planet. It probably will look like a red desert. -- J. Stephen Hartsfield, Seventh Grader, 1984
  • The Earth is a cradle of the mind, but we cannot live forever in a cradle. -- Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky, Father of Russian Astronautics, 1896
  • And then, the Earth being small, mankind will migrate into space, and will cross the airless Saharas which separate planet from planet and sun from sun. The Earth will become a Holy Land which will be visited by pilgrims from all the quarters of the Universe. Finally, men will master the forces of Nature; they will become themselves architects of systems, manufacturers of worlds. -- Winwood Reade, THE MARTYRDOM OF MAN, 1872
  • Ships and sails proper for the heavenly air should be fashioned. Then there will also be people, who do not shrink from the dreary vastness of space. -- Johannes Kepler, letter to Galileo Galilei, 1609
  • Before another century is done it will be hard for people to imagine a time when humanity was confined to one world, and it will seem to them incredible that there was ever anybody who doubted the value of space and wanted to turn his or her back on the Universe. -- Isaac Asimov, 1979.
  • But does Man have any 'right' to spread through the universe? Man is what he is, a wild animal with the will to survive, and (so far) the ability, against all competition. Unless one accepts that, anything one says about morals, war, politics, you name it, is nonsense. Correct morals arise from knowing what man is, not what do-gooders and well-meaning old Aunt Nellies would like him to be. The Universe will let us know - later - whether or not Man has any "right" to expand through it. -- Robert A. Heinlein, 'Starship Troopers,' 1960.
  • Homo sapiens. What an inventive, invincible species. It's only a few million years since they crawled up out of the mud and learned to walk. Puny, defenceless bipeds. They've survived flood, famine and plague. They've survived cosmic wars and holocausts. And now, here they are, out among the stars, waiting to begin a new life. Ready to outsit eternity. They're indomitable. -- Fourth Doctor, Dr. Who, "The Ark in Space"
  • Man must rise above the Earth—to the top of the atmosphere and beyond—for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives. -- Socrates
  • It will free man from the remaining chains, the chains of gravity which still tie him to this planet. It will open to him the gates of heaven. -- Wernher von Braun, on the importance of space travel, 10 February 1958.
  • For the wise man looks into space and he knows there is no limited dimensions. -- Lao-Tzu
  • Anyone who has spent any time in space will love it for the rest of their lives. I achieved my childhood dream of the sky. -- Valentina Tereshkova (Валенти́на Влади́мировна Терешко́ва).
  • "It is good to renew one's wonder," said the philosopher. "Space travel has again made children of us all." -- Ray Bradbury, The Martian Chronicles
  • Virgin Galactic’s sub-orbital space trips promise to be the most intense and wonderful experiences that passengers have ever had. Astronauts of the past 45 years have all returned to earth struggling to convey the enormity of what they have discovered and with their perceptions clearly changed. To be able to extend that privilege to people from all walks of life has been a long held ambition at Virgin. To date more than 200 tickets have already been sold! -- Excerpt from Park Avenue Space Travel's webpage: http://www.galacticjourneys.com/?gcl...FSEeDQoduFOlYw
  • It's a glorious mission, with historical significance. It's the highest honour for we astronauts to travel into space as representatives of the motherland." -- Zhai Zhigang, Chinese Astronaut

Entries are due to me by owl no later than Sat. Nov. 22 GMT -4. (I like to have them by 9pm my time and I am US Eastern ). If you are not participating in Week 2, you MUST send me your intention to Get Out Of NHP LIMS Free by using your pass.

No -- as long as you have 5 consecutive words from a quote there, you can make it about anything, and as long as the words are legible. If you choose images that aren't related to space travel, it's ok, because some people might not use any images at all if they wish, and that shouldn't be counted against them.

Re: Non-HP LIMS: New Topic Up

So, I'm not voted off? I can't believe that. My icon was #2. I got some negative feedback on the background. The background is from the same map as the boat. I didn't add anything that wasn't already in the map. I just cleaned it up.

Re: Non-HP LIMS: New Topic Up

So that's me out.
In post-trial defense of myself I must say that the rules did say that "The focus of the icon does not necessarily need to be about history or about maps."
It was far from fabulous but I really enjoyed making it. The entire cut out of the girl is made from one of the maps--even the skirt/leg/shoe separation as is the side bit. Like I said before, I've never done anything quite like it, and it did look clearer before I made it icon-sized, but that's how it goes.
Good luck to everyone!

I really did like your icon -- but I never vote in my contest. You are a fantastic icon maker -- the banner to the contest proves it ! Come back for the challenge round -- promise me that!

As Kim stated, the topic was stated as follows:
Quote:
Technique/Restrictions: You must use one of the following images in a visible way in your icon -- some of the images are highly stylized already -- your job is to take something that has lots of texture and/or color and use it in an icon. The focus of the icon does not necessarily need to be about history or about maps, however. As long as there is some visible evidence of one of the images I have provided in your icon, it's ok. You may use text or animation if you wish, color or greyscale. Any additional images are fine, too, just so long as the images taken from the map are clearly in evidence.

Well if I had known that the girl was made out of the maps, I would have probably not voted for it, but I just didn't find it that apparent. Knowing it now, I say you did a great job.

Mine was 9. I was frankly surprised not to be voted out when I saw it in comparison to the others.

i'm not upset at all! it's just a huge coincidence! and yes, you were very kind to allow images
when you said it was about Space Travel i got really worried. i'm not a fan of the topic. but the quotes are great! i'm sure i'll find something to work with

i don't believe it! kala_way is out? i'm so sorry...
your icon was one of my faves. it really was! you can check, it's on my list

mine was the angel, #5:

thanks for the critics.
i also went with a non map-related topic. which was allowed.
