OK, here's what you can do: really quickly, throw one together and you can post it after I put the table up, and everyone can tell you how much they hate you for being so darned clever. And then you can be all humble and stuff and say things like, "Oh no, it's not nearly as good as the table!" and we can all smack you with wet noodles.

Well.... I feel really satisfied that I could do mine on a theme I feel very strongly about (talk of changing the world!!!).... I am totally ambiguous about the visual shape of it, though. *bites nails nervously*. This could be tough....

comments:
1) This is great. I like how you worked in the text - there's a lot, but it's totally readable. The texture is nice too, and I like how the colored stripes aren't both completely horizontal. The levels and contrast are also nicely done.
2) I love the gradually blurred look, but I think that the front could be slightly sharper. The colors look amazing, and the texture is really good with the foreground. the quote is hilarious, but could be made a but clearer to read. Sorry I sound so critical, because I really like it.
3) This is a really cool idea, and I love the font. I'm not too sure about the layout, because I don't think there is enough balance between the open space and the people. I think it might have worked better if a: it was chopped a little at the top (sigs don't have to be squares) and b: if there was something of a different color to contrast.
4) The printing press is my favorite invention too! I love the layout, the style of text and the old look of it.

Because the justified text and hyphenations spoil the graphic for me, though it was a good idea.

My favourite is #4, for the convincing recreation

1)I love b&w color combos with a small addition of color. My only quibble is that it seems so left-heavy. I think you could have centered the telephone and text. Granted you wouldn't have fit in all that text but really was it all necessary anyway?

2)Very retro, but a tad blurry. A less scripty font would have worked better imho.

3) I really like this picture and the coloring is great but I am quite unclear as to which invention you are referring. The camera as in a picture is worth a thousand words or the cannon which could cost a thousand lives?

4) I really like the idea of this. However I think you would have been better off with a b&w icon with the large letters in color only. The creamy tone to the background just doesn't contrast well with the typing perhaps contributing to the blurriness I see. And then the large letters seem pixelly.

5)Oooh, lovely. I really enjoy the text and the background. I think, though, that the red of the telephone is too red. Perhaps more of a darker maroon or even better a more monochromatic ehite or brown to fit with your background.

1. Love the image overall, the color scheme is fairly obvious and in a great way, I don't like how one of them is straight and the other is not though. I love the font and the writing, I never would have thought of that, and it works greatly.
2. I like how it is blurred, but I think a different font would have been nice.
3. Too much open space at the top, also wish there was a larger variation of color.
4. Like the execution, I just wish there was more variation in the image.

1. Like: the way the colors are used as a border with a black and white phone, division of text, and image.
Dislike: too much text

2. Like: text and quote, border, big image of phone
Dislike: everything appears blurry, even text. I understand the phone should have the blurry look, but it adds it to the text and it bothers my eyes.

3. Like: text--the font used, placement of the text, idea, image, it's simple yet not simple because of the camera in the image.
Dislike: the main color used--too much of it, imo.

4. Like: idea, big block letters "G" and "P"
Dislike: too busy, hard to focus on important text

5. Like: background, fonts used, placement of image and text
Dislike: coloring of phone--doesn't look original to the phone, the definition of what a phone takes away from the icon.

1. Love this one! However, I think the text for the word "phone" could have been more elegant, and I would have chosen a different color.
2. The image is a bit blurry, but what a great quote! The font fits well.
3. I think there could have been better coloring. The image is a bit boring to me. And I don't like the quote being just "worth a thousand."
4. I think the icon looks too busy with all the text. I'm not liking the coloring much either, but I like the realistic approach.
5. Love the background, love the font, love the image! I think there could have been more contrast between the font and background, but overall good job!

Tough choice on this one.

1 - Not bad, but didn't stand out to me.
2 - I liked this one, but I didn't like the blurriness. The quote is great, but a little hard for me to read.
3 - Not real clear what the invention is or what she's taking a picture of. A pink wall? This would have been better if we had seen something worth taking a picture of in the icon: a vista, a person, something besides a wall. EDIT: I looked again and see she is taking a picture of the man and the cannon. For some reason, to me, it looked like she was facing away when I first looked. Still, it could have been clearer.
4 - Loved this one. The old font and color scheme seem to work well for me. I really like the way the words stand out yet seem part of the overall text. Very clever.
5 - I liked this one. Would have been better without the typo, but I still like it. The colors, the old phone, the font all seemed to work.

I'm sorry to see that icon maker go. I think another color choice should have been used, but I thought it sort of had a humorous element to it.

I agree with all of you. I didn't like it either, and I left it till too late. I spent a long time on a different one, but forgot to save it and lost most of my work--couldn't bear to do it again.

I really liked #1! Congrats to the remaining people for making Top 3
