Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
Patience, my dears. I was giving people a chance to get their stuff in, but I'm going to just go ahead with what I have. Table up ASAP...
![]() ROUND 3, WEEK 1 VOTING WEEK 1: Bernoulli's Principle Bernoulli's Principle explains the phenomenon that allows wings to produce lift and, as a result, lets things fly. Quote: "The most common explanation goes like this: Air travels faster over the more curvaceous top surface of the wing than the flatter bottom surface. The quicker a fluid (like air) moves, the less pressure it exerts, a phenomenon known as Bernoulli's principle, which is named after its discoverer, Daniel Bernoulli, an 18th-century Swiss mathematician. Thus, the slower moving air below the wing exerts more pressure on the wing than the faster moving air above it. This produces a net upward force called lift, which pushes the aircraft upward and balances the downward pull of gravity." -- Staying Aloft: What Does Keep Them Up There? -- excerpt from the New York Times Size: Icon (max. size 125 x 125px) Technique/Restrictions: You must illustrate Bernoulli's Principle without using animation. Everything else is ok. You don't have to make a textbook-style illustration like this: http://www.hiflykites.co.za/kite-onl...inciples-3.gif -- Just show me an example of Bernoulli's Principle at work. ![]() LINK TO TABLE Vote for the TWO images you think are least effective/that you like least. Give constructive criticism, please, especially for those two icons. Also, PLEASE REMEMBER that this isn't science class -- it's a graphics contest. As long as the icon maker seems to have made an attempt to illustrate Bernoulli's Principle (and you can assume they have, since they are on the table , score them NOT on their grasp of the concept but on the quality of their work. New topic up ASAP. Good Luck! Next Week's Topic Last edited by Kimagine; April 6th, 2009 at 1:02 am. |

Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
these are awesome!
ok to the voting. 1) I like the use of depth, the airstreams behind the plane are a very nice touch 2) I didn't know they made kites like that. I like the B&W backround with the color font and kite, makes it pop, very nice. 3) I love the brightness of the icon, and lovely font, but I don't understand the pink tinge in the middle there. 4)I love the bird and how its in motion, it justs looks like its about to take off. and I love the incorperated colors of the bird into the backround. 5)I like the play on the american pastime and the colors, I just think there is a bit too much text. It kind of draws the eye away from the ball nd what's it doing. 6)I love this one. The red parachute against the rocks and the solitary figure against the water works very nicely. the only thing I see wrong is possibly too much tint in the sky. 7) I like that the text doesn't detract from the image, you just kind of notice it after the image, the hint of color in the smoke is very well done, and the graininess, is a tad dark, but it works with the image. 8) Like #4, I like that's the eagle is in motion, and the fade is so well done. 9) I think that you took the challenge litererally, and that's cool but compare to the others, it looks like it came out of a science book from high school. 10) I like the contrast of the black bird and the white font, the font is a bit overpowering but still really nice. 11)I like the image, but I don't understand the streching of the balloon. 12) Is this one of the ways that the principle is suppose to work in? I didn't know that. I like the text and the backround, the face on the bottle( i think there's a face) is too distracting. 13) Flawless. no words. 14) I like the historic feel of it, very nice, the font though is a little to historic. but maybe if it was smaller in might have worked. 15) I like the image and the B&W image contrasted with that tiny bit of color in the flash you used in one of the layers. 16) The saturtration and brightness of the image are done very well. I don't reall see anything wrong with this. 17) The pink is a nice contrast to the black figures, but the kite is so small that you have no idea what it is at first glance. Vote off: 9, 17 sorry ![]()

Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
I was away this weekend and thought I'd come back to find I was voted out. Well, that looks like not the case. I really don't have the patience to go through all the images so I'll do five images.
3. I like the idea. I love the girl running with the kite and the cartoony feel it has, not sure if that's what you see or not. I don't really like the placement of the text nor the color as it seems oversharp. 6. I like the red of the parachute against the greenish blue of the sky and sea. It's a nice simple looking icon. It's serene, to me. There's this blue line at the top that takes away from the icon. 9. Looks like the diagram of a paper airplane. It's different and a very literal interpretation of the theme. It's simple yet not. I like that. 11. Love the image. Love the reflection of the balloon in the water. Like the colors. I just don't understand the stretching of the balloon. 17. Doesn't show Bernoulli's Legacy. It's a nice color pink with the black images, but it doesn't express the text. There's a little tiny something in the air, but the focus isn't on that. It's more on the pink and the text. I like the text and the white background for the text, but the icon doesn't do anything. Favs: 6 & 9 Vote off: 3 & 17

ugh! i was down to #17 and then i accidentally hit a button so i lost the whole thing
so i'm just going to explain my favs and my votes9: this is a little too textbook for me, i think it just explains the principle rather than explaining it in an artistic way. 12: i love the victorian feel, the colouring is exquisite, amazing job! 16: love everything about it! the picture, the colouring, everything is really great, nice job ![]() 17: this icon is very harsh on the eyes, the contrast is a little too much. is the thing in the sky a bird? so... voting off: #9 + 17 favs: #12 + 16

Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
1. This is cute. A bit plain and maybe a tad disjointed with each element, but cute
![]() 2. The ship is a kite? The ship is very pretty, and the background is nice though better if it were brighter. The font doesn’t really do it justice. It looks almost corporate. 3. This one’s fun I like the bright colors! Very well balanced and lit. One of my faves4. I like the coloring on this and it’s a good crop. Tad plain though. 5. I had to look up what Bernoulli ball is, but I still don’t quite know what the picture is, airflow I guess, going sideways. I like the coloring a lot. I’m not wild about the font or why it would be an “all-american pastime”?? 6. The blue looks a bit strange (too yellow?) I like the shot of red though. 7. It almost has an antiquey look and I don’t know if that really works here but I love both the crop and the image. The text looks a bit like an afterthought, you probably didn’t want to interrupt the picture though. 8. I almost did something similar to this, it’s a hard look to make clean. I like the scratchy background bits (bird?), but the smudge on the main image is a bit much IMO, maybe if it only followed? I would have pulled the crop back even more so it’s not so centered. In general I do like it that’s why I’m being picky ![]() 9. Interesting, but looks just out of a textbook, nothing “pretty” about it ya know? 10. I love the silhouette of the bird, the background looks a bit odd, more like a swirling curse than the sky The text is interesting, I appreciate that it’s nice and bold!11. I like the bright colors. It looks like the left side of the balloon is messed up (was that on purpose?). Simple but pretty ![]() 12. I love the colors and the background, and that’s a perfect font! I didn’t know the atomizer was related to this. One of my faves ![]() 13. I adore the colors in this and the feel of movement. Very subtle and lovely! 14. It’s a nice image with a lot of potential, but the border and the text don’t really add anything to it. 15. Nice crop and interesting lighting and coloring. 16. I like the picture a lot! I don’t really know what the line across the top is, looks like a coloring layer accidentally got pulled down. Beautiful job otherwise. 17. I like the silhouette and the bright pink certainly stands out. Voting: 2 and 14 Faves: 3, 12, 13, 16 ![]()

Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
some really creative entries:
01 - nice use of tiny text 02 - good choice of text but the font and text size take away from your image 03 - this looks fun but the pink blob is out of place imho 04 - had to look a couple times to make out the image a bit blurry 05 - nice use of gradient 06 - the image selection is great, but the image has too much green i, personally wd've filtered some of the green 07 - this remindes me of the image of dancing leprechauns at the world quidditch playoffs the text looks kinda stuck in there somewhere 08 - did you layer the background of the sketch and the foreground of the eagle or did it come that way? the eagle is a tad blurry even w/my glasses on. 09 - too busy with text and doesn't seem to have much creativity, guess seeing the original image might help 10 - nicely done 11 - i like the distortion affect here very nice use of color as well, but since a hot air balloon uses hot air, does bernoulli's law really figure into it's flight capability? 12 - i went and looked up ~the atomizer and was impressed to see it was using b's principle to operate 13 - considering the darkness of the sillouhette of the bird, the texture/coloring is too dark 14 - the text is unnecessary here very nice image selection 15 - this is also a nice image selection 16 - the starkness of the kite is very affective 17 - the kite is hard to make out but very different and original voting off: 04, 02 faves: 10, 06, 11 ttfn |

Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
1. I like the airstream behind the plane and the colors are good, but im not too fond of the unreadable text.
2. I kind of like how the boat pops but maybe it pops a bit too much and is slightly too bright. 3. 2 and 3 totally go together. I like hte basic feel of it. It might be slightly too saturated, but the background is really pretty. I don't get the pink in the middle, but it's pretty anyways.4. I LOVE this icon. the background is so pretty and goes so well with the bird. I really like the slightly blurred wings too, really gives it good movement. 5. I like how it looks, but i have absolutely no idea what it's supposed to be . I like how the colors look and the moon, but i don't really like the line thingies around the moon6. Too oversaturated but the parachute really pops. 7. Great effect, but it's a bit pixelated 8. The blur is pretty good but maybe the background is a bit undersaturated. 9. a bit too textbook and a little pixelated. 10. If the effect used on the bird in 13 was used here and the word fly wasn't so bright, it would be a bit better, but at first glance, it was one of the best. 11. Good general effect, absolutely love the colors used, but the stretched balloon is kind of weird (btw, about balloon, just a general question, but technically, does that illustrate the principle because balloons have to do with air density instead of pressure) 12. I like the general feel but have no idea how this has to do with Bernouhoweveryouspellhisname's principle 13. DEFINITELY my favorite. Absolutely beautiful. I love how it isn't just solid black and the bird works so well with the background 14. The border is a bit distracting but other than that it's ok 15. there isn't enough contrast. There should be lights and darks but the brightness is a bit overpowering. 16. way too oversaturated. The boy in the picture looks like he has a bad sunburn . Maybe a bit too bright too, but the colors used are pretty good.17. The image is a bit too flat and too bright (in terms of color). the lines are too harsh as well. voting off: 9, 17 favs: 4, 13

Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
1. Very simple and nice. I don't think the text brush was needed, but it doesn't hurt.
2. Nice idea. The image isn't very clear, kinda pixelated. 3. Very nice image! I think the pink in the middle was not needed, but still very nice! 4. Nice idea, just a little too simple for my liking. 5. I like the image, but the fact that I do not know what is going on makes it hard to appreciate. 6. The idea is nice, as is the parachute itself; however it would have been nicer if the sky and/or the water was more blue instead of the green color it is. 7. I think this would have done better if there were colors instead of the gray, black and brown. Also the font selection isn't the best, and appears pixelated. 8. I think the image would have been nicer without the drawing of the wing placed on top of it actually, but it's still nice. 9. It would have been nicer to see a real life example rather than a textbook one, a little boring. 10. I really like this. Can't think of anything negative to say. 11. Very nice 12. I like it, not an obvious choice at all for this topic, but I guess that's what makes it original. 13. The background is too dark for me. 14. A nice font would have worked better than such a square, normal font. Also the border really isn't needed. 15. I love this one, although I think it could do with definied colors rather than gray. 16. While others said it is too saturated, I love the effect! 17. I think this is a very interesting approach, very simple, yet still nice. Favorites: 11 & 16 Voting Off: 7 & 14

Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
Great use of the principle.
1. This one so reminds me of an old superman cartoon, I love that look. The writing is a bit too small to read, although I am beginning to doubt I have 20/20 vision anymore, so don't take my word for that. .2. I totally dig this one. It immediately grabbed my eye - I didn't read the words on this one at first and I thought it was a flying ship, which is altogether cool - but I suppose it is a kite (still a flying ship kite). Anyway, great use of color and very nice cloud arrangement in the background. 3. I like this. I am starting to get into the saturated deal - and here there is an added effect as well, posterized? Something, anyway, I really like it. I like the coloring as well. I would have likely not used the pink - and maybe left the word out altogether, because the picture is kick on its own. But that is a preference call and overall I dig this one a lot. 4. Love the background sky on this one - great job. I like the bird too, is he wearing a hat? LOL. The fact that he is landing or taking off shows the principle very well. And I like the feathering effect on his wing, good job. 5. Zee curve ball...well I like this idea a lot. I feel the colors are a little bit muted, rendering the photo a bit muted as well. I think a little more contrast, perhaps highlighting the white a bit more in the red white and blue theme would help bring out the photo a bit more. The lettering is nice. 6. Very nice. Nice background and the saturated red looks good against it - the red on the mountain is pretty cool too. 7. I like this one, a great representation of the principle. The background color perhaps could have been a bit darker to help contrast the planes - and it is a bit pixellated. But the arrangement is sweet. 8. This is interesting. I like the bird and the wind effect that shows the principle - although it blurs the bird a bit over much at the beak. I am not so into the drawing about him. Nonetheless, I like it overall and I think the background color chosen makes for a perfect contrast. 9. Nice job at showing the principle. I think perhaps more vibrant colors would have been good, even though the book-effect is nice - but just because it is also serving as a graphic. Nice job on the writing and for what I think you were going for, ya did a great job. 10. This is very nice. I like the dark bird on the subtly colored background and the lettering works great. The design on the background is sweet. 11. I like the coloring and also the reflection. The sky looks like a windy sunset flight, nice display of the principle, good job. 12. This one is unique in the group - it is cool someone went for the atomizer. I like the old fashion look of the bottle, although I feel like the background could be a bit darker. But I like it, nice job. 13. This is splendor - the bird is cool against that kick background that releases into sparkles, nice job. 14. Haha...nice selection. The principle at its basics. I think the black and white captured the times excellently and the lettering too is perfect in that regard. I like it. 15. This is hilarious. Those two little legs sticking out cracked me up. I like the flipped out subtle coloring on the B/W, nice job there, like the reflection of a rainbow or glint that burst thru the b/w. Like #14, Cloudy day, lots of wind, good job on the principle. 16. This is sweet, I really like the idea and the colors chosen - I am liking saturation more and more these days. I think it gets a little too bright to the right, but not significantly - and it does highlight the child. Overall, sweet job. 17. I like this idea a lot. His legacy is seen everytime we see a parent and child running about with their kites. It is very simple and I think that is cool, and of course that never means it was also easy to make. I think the kite could have been bigger, and maybe with a bit of color, that might have allowed the photo to retain its simplicity but been a bit more dynamic. Voting: 5 and 17. I like things about both of them a lot though.

Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
1) Love the use of a cartoony image
It's a very cute icon. The tiny text bothers me a bit though. I dont think it fits too well into the overall image and throws the icon off balance a bit. I think the icon would have been just fine without the text. 2) Lovely bright colors The text is good, I like the bright colors that are tied into the sails. I like how you tried not to overdo the background and left it simple3) Excellent work! I love the bright colors, the spot of the fuchsia that contrasted nicely to the bright blue background. 4) Great stock icon! I like how you can see the motion of the bird's wing but it still looks very polished. 5)It was a little hard to see the baseball at first because of the gradient but I really like the image once I figured out what it was. I think that this icon would have been more effective in color or black and white. Gradients often, I feel, distract from the icon. Still, overall good work ![]() 6) I like the image, I think it's cropped well. I think the water however is too great along with the cliff face. I would have maybe adjusted the coloring a bit to incorporate some warmer tones and balance it out a bit. I like the simplicity though! 7) I like the subtle coloring and the framing of the icon The text is nice and out of the way but I would take some time to explore different fonts that aren't so pixelated. 8) Ooh cool effect and kudos for trying something daring I really like this one. 9) lol! Very literal take on the challenge. I would have perhaps named the principle being described but overall I have not complaints For what it is, it's well made. 10) Psychedelic! I love the of the bird and the cropping. The glowy text is really nice but I dont think the background pops enough. Too much gray in my opinion. 11) I love the coloring and the cropping but the blur on the outside of the balloon really bothers me. 12) Someone must have done their homework because Im still a little confuzzeled as to how this applies to the principle but I trust you Very well made and polished finish13) I love the coloring! Only complaint is the stars or whatever they are on the top of the icon, I would have smudged them smooth ![]() 14) Beautiful image and cropping! The border is a bit distracting and the text/font doesn't fit really but overall it's a nice icon. 15) I like the subtle coloring and the soft matted look of this icon. 16) Lovely lovely lovely, nothing more I can say ![]() 17) I really like the idea! The coloring though reminds me of pepto bismol. Voting for: 11,5 Im sorry! Really I think everyone did great this week ![]()

Re: Non-HP LIMS: ROUND THREE HAS BEGUN!!!
Oh wow.... such an amazing table, and I don't have time to comment on all of them!
![]() OK.... Votes: 5, 17 5: nice gradient in the background, but I can't really decipher the image at all. I also think that the caption could perhaps have been designed a bit better (different font? font mix? 'pastime' not simple centred?) 17 great colour effect, and I like the idea! But I think somewhere in the process the picture lost too much definition and is too difficult to decipher - the kite is just a black speck, and the edge of the white zone is pixellated. Favourites: 9 is very simple (and I am not sure I'd like it as an avatar) but it made me chucke about its straighforward school-book-ness. 4 like the colours and the whole combination here 8 this is the one that (IMHO) fulfills the task best (apart from 9 perhaps ) .... and it looks pretty good while doing so.

No time for long comments unfortunately
Votes: 5 - The image is a little hard to make out. Also, I'm not fond of the color scheme. 7 - The image is rather blurry as is the text. Though the image is a creative one. Favorite: 1 - I love the coloring and just the whole thing in general.

Sorry to see you two go! I really liked 17.
This was mine: ![]() Yes, atomizers do demonstrate Bernoulli's principle! Anyway, I'm pleased with it overall. It was difficult finding an image that would be good to use in an icon, so when I came across this, I jumped at the chance to use it.
