Jodi Picoult
Charlotte Bronte

I'm adding some more authors to this list

Shashi Tharoor - A brilliant writer, be it fiction or non-fiction. His keen observations and witty style of writing is a treat!
M.J. Akbar - Excellent writer of non-fiction. Writes it in a way that makes the tale as fascinating and moving as fiction.
Alex Von Tunzelmann - Sure, most of the now infamous part of her book Indian Summers was speculative, but I thoroughly enjoy her narrative, especially her ability to correlate events in history that nobody would have thought made sense together.
Nayantara Sahgal - Deceptively simple style of writing. Though I've read only one book of hers, I adore her writing and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.
I cannot believe I haven't added Jhumpa Lahiri to my list. She's an incredible author and definitely one of my all-time favourite authors!

Jawaharlal Nehru, as an author too, is excellent

Re: Favourite author

I think my list should be edited, it's been well over a year since I posted it first. Here it is, in no particular order except Tolkien is my number one:

- J.R.R. Tolkien
- J. K. Rowling
- Douglas Adams
- Eoin Colfer
- Jo Nesbų
- Neil Gaiman
- Jasper Fforde
- Robert Jordan
- Astrid Lindgren
- Roald Dahl
- Anne-Cath. Vestly

Of course, this list will change as I discover new authors, and decide some weren't as good as I thought they were. Tolkien will always be there, though.

I'd have to say that the number one spot goes to Sarah Waters. After i read Affinity I knew that I had to write.
I have to add another: Jane Austen. Now that I've read Sense & Sensibility I can say she is definitely one of my favorites. She writes the way I think but much better.

ETA: Add Suzanne Collins to the list

Jane Austen used her wit and observational skills, and so so so much more to write some of the best books ever written. Completely agree, haha.

I want to put Melina Marchetta out there, I enjoy her books immensely.
And of course, J.K Rowling, for being the author who turned me into a bookworm (for obvious reason).

Re: Favourite author

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. They're just sooo made of win.
And for non-fiction, probably music historian Jon Savage. His book about punk rock and the Pistols is incredible.

Re: Favourite author

J.K. Rowling and Jodi Picoult stand out at the moment. I hate books that are so predictable and these two authors always have huge plot twists and unsuspecting surprises.

Re: Favourite author

No Particular order:

Micheal Gear, but only without his wife
Charles De Lint, one of the fathers of modern urban fantasy and still pretty darn good.
Neil Gaiman, because of the Sandman and a lot of other things.
Jared Daimond Non fiction but what he says matters.
SM Stirling
Patrick Rothfuss
Edward Abby, It would be so much more wonderful if we had more, Doc Sarvus', Bonnie Azzbugs, Seldom Seen Smith's and especially George Haydukes running the world.
Frank Herbert
Robert Heinlein
John Ajvide Lindqvist--For writing a Vampire book that in no way, shape or form could ever be mistaken for Twilight.

I wonder what it is you like about her? I have read all her books and honestly I cannot stand them at all. Her writing is so...insipid, IMO. And she name-drops like hell.

There's also a bit of Did Not Do The Research in her books.

I enjoy Tolstoy, Austen, the Bronte sisters, Dostoyevsky, Ian McEwan, Douglas Adams, F. Bordewijk, W.F. Hermans, Bulgakov, Nabokov, Philip Pullman, Lewis Carroll and JKR of course all though I wouldn't say she is one of my favourites.

I also like Ovid, and I've read him in Latin.

Re: Favourite author

I'll have to say:

J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis, Philip Pullman, Lemony Snicket and Ellen Hopkins.

These are the ones where I enjoy nearly all of their works.

As for other authors, I have many favorite books by a wide array of authors, but I wouldn't say they're my favorite authors simply because I didn't enjoy their other books.
