They were actually trying to protect both but katniss was obviously the number one priority, however they knew if they didnt protect peeta katniss would never go with them. also they said they tried to rescue peeta but couldnt.

Like Spacecadet said, they knew that Katniss had only one goal, and it was to save Peeta. So they had to make sure he stayed alive so that she would remain a fighter, so she wouldn't give up, and so she could be rescued and become the Mockingjay.

Well I just posted this news on the "Go Ahead and Vent" thread. So you can guess how I feel about it. I feel like they're gonna dye her hair black and call it a day.

ETA: The recent interview with Gary Ross confirms it.

The actress will have black hair (because that will totally change her skin color, height, age, and body type).

I'll have to read your vent! I think her skin color is ok, because I believe her mom was from the 'merchant' class and she seemed to me to be of fair coloring (pale skin, blonde) while her dad was the dark haired coal miner. Plus they're going to want to contrast her against Peeta since she spends more time with him in the story we see than Gale.

I'm just glad they picked someone who they are touting as intelligent. I think Katniss is a strong character, and I hope they have her kick butt!

But Katniss doesn't look like her mom. She says she has the Seam look like her dad and that Gale (who is 100% Seam) could be her brother. But I see how they could justify that change in the movie. The contrast with Peeta was precisely because of her color. There is none if they look the same.

I agreed i think it requires a smart person to play katniss, and while her looks dont match those in the books, and although hair and makeup can do a lot, I think its more about acting skill here, i would rather katniss not look the part at all and act it perfectly than have her look like katniss and be terrible in the role. Yes there are certain quarks in the book, well katniss is skinny and jennifer is curvey but you forget katniss is better fed than a lot of the kids in her town because of her hunting. And i think they aired on the side of slightly older because there is a certain innate maturity in katniss that a lot of younger actresses might struggle with. Honestly though im not overly familiar with jennifer's work, but im not one to judge a book by its cover. I'll wait and see how she performs then make my mind up, i think if you set yourself up for disapproval you might just get that.

Re: The Hunger Games

Her casting alone is a disappointment. It's just so typical of Hollywood. I want to be positive about the movie, I really do, but it's impossible to just force myself to change how I feel. My faith is at about 40% right now.

Katniss is better fed but she's still not well fed. Better than absolutely horrible isn't good. She says that she's small in stature.

But anyway, I've been trying to separate this movie from THG books and hopefully it won't influence how I think of the books.

Re: The Hunger Games

I don't know too much about the actress that's been cast, I don't think I've seen anything with her in but I'm reserving judgement. It's strange, I really struggled to have a strong image of Katniss in my head when reading the books, I think my version is a bit generic so I'm more likely to be ok with somebody who isn't quite as she's described because the image in my head isn't that defined. That may just be because I need to re-read the books though I think a lot of Katniss is in her personality and the way she acts, so I'm happy having an experienced actress taking on that role because I think it could be a role to really get your teeth in to. So I'll wait and see

I think that's a good point. Because the books are written first person perspective I get more of a feeling of who Katniss is more than an image of her. Because I see what she sees I have better images of what the other characters look like in my head.

Regarding her skin color - I took it more of an outdoors-all-day kind of thing and not so much a racial thing. Maybe that's why it's not bothering me so much. Also maybe because I see the image of coal miners as pale as an underground-all-day kind of look that the 'seam' look in my head was more pale skin, dark eyes and dark hair.

I could see that being the explanation in the movie, although the book does say that the Seam look is olive and it can't be from the sun if the coal miners are Seam people.

Re: The Hunger Games

someone posted this picture yesterday of jennifer and i think this is a lot more katniss like, the dark hair definitely helps, and the makeup better defines her facial lines.
Spoiler: show

Yep, good point. We'll have to see if they cast Gale as equally pale, or if they give him the olive skin tone. I am also interested in seeing if they cast the tributes as a realistic racial mix that would reflect taking kids from all over what is left of the US. If Rue and Thresh are the only ones with dark skin, I will be surprised.

Hopefully this will be like a Harry's eye color kind of thing. Some people were REALLY bothered that he didn't have green eyes in the movie, but in the end it worked out ok.

Re: The Hunger Games

I don't know, but I just don't think that the characters' looks mattered much in the series. I mean when I think of them, I can picture Katniss alright, but what about her mother, for instance? What about Prim? We know that she's blond, but that's all we know about her looks. The descriptions are not dwelt on a lot with many characters. I really don't mind the actors' looks so long as they carry out the roles well. After all, the actors usually end up very different from what I imagined them, .

I'm starting to wonder about others, like Haymitch and Effie (does anybody get the feeling that she looks like Umbridge? ). I have almost vivid images for the two of them and I'm looking forward to see who'll play them, .

I agree i think in terms of looks the only thing i care about is that she has dark hair and a thin build other than that, i care more about her attitude in the role and how she portrays katniss, for me its all about how the role is played on this one.

Yes i thought of effie as a slightly more attractive umbridge, someone who thinks she's far more attractive than she is, not unsightly but not as gorgeous as she things she is. A lot of people say kristen chenoweth for the role, and i think she would portray it well im just think they would have to make her look less pretty.

Well I wouldn't really compare eye color with skin color (especially in terms of the history that Hollywood has when it comes to casting). Because of Jen's casting, Gale's skin tone is gonna be a problem either way.
Spoiler: show
If he's pale it will be more casting of lighter skinned people to play darker skinned roles. If he's olive, it'll be another story where the white girl chooses the good white guy over the bad/dangerous dark guy.
