Martin Scorsese Films

Rate and discuss one of my favorite directors filmography. I've only seen 5 of his films, but I've already been impressed by his films and I'm open to recs.

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

Oh, this man is only superb. If you want ratings, mine go as follows. I won't write them all, but there's a few.

Taxi Driver- 10/10, absolutely stunning. One of the best films ever, I reckon.
Goodfellas-8/10, I saw it after Taxi Driver, which I felt was more impressive.
Casino- 8/10- not his best work, I always think, but it's still brilliant. It should be a testament that I consider that to be a poor rating for one of his movies! He's just of such a high standard.
Gangs of New York- 7/10. I liked this well enough- it just didn't have the Scorsese Watermark of playing games with fear on it.
The Aviator- 9/10. I loved this. He left himself behind a bit, but made a wonderful film along the way. It did what Gangs never managed to do-it sort of consolidated him as a man of many talents, in my mind at least.
No Direction Home- What more could you want? A film about Bob Dylan, by Martin Scorsese? 1000/10. Wonderfully intuitive.
The Departed- 9/10- really deserved all the awards it got. Brilliant.

I can understand some thinking Casino was just great, but not anything amazing. But I can't understand giving Goodfellas anything less than a 10/10. I am however very interested in seeing Taxi Driver and The Aviator, also The Last Temptation of Christ which strongly intrigues me.

I blind bought Taxi Driver today due to such immense praise from everyone I talk to and interact with on here, here's to hoping it lives up to my high expectations. I also have The Age of Innocence recorded on my dvr, what's the general thoughts on that?

Taxi Driver is one for the ages, that's for sure. I loved the Age of Innocence, partly because of Daniel Day Lewis, also because I'm a fan of the book. It was a departure for Scorsese, but I thought he pulled it off beautifully. You might also want to try Kundun (about the Dalai Lama), also different from his usual stuff but somehow more personal. There's also the King of Comedy (with De Niro) and the Last Waltz (probably the best concert film ever made).

I thought the Last Temptation of Christ was uneven as movie, though thought provoking as you said. But the music by Peter Gabriel is SO beautiful! It's perhaps my favorite soundtrack of all time.

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

I'm not exactly a Scorsese fan, though I admire that the same person can make films so different as Age of Innocence, Taxi Driver or The Aviator, and make all of them excellent, or almost. Well, I find The Aviator a bit annoying, but it's for the plane design thing: it bothers me a lot that DiCaprio/Hughes has a strike of inspiration and suddenly develops things I have to study for months to understand

Anyway, if you're fans of Scorsese, I think you'll enjoy this: it's a short-movie/commercial he made last year for Spanish a brand of champagne. Have fun.

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

The Age of Innocence is a very fine film, though not to everyone's taste. I'd still put in the the "top drawer" of Scorsese films, along with Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas. The (IMO) "2nd drawer" - The Departed, Casino, The Color of Money, etc. are still better than most directors could dream of achieving.

The King of Comedy is something I've been wanting to see for the past year, but just haven't remembered it whenever I went to a video store.

I'll see The Age of Innocence within the week and come back with my thoughts. I'll probably watch Taxi Driver tonight, I'm sooooooo excited.

I agree with your top drawer and second drawer (based off what I've seen), even though I've given alot of his films high ratings. I don't deny being a fanboy (already).

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

I watched Taxi Driver two nights ago, and yes, the film was as amazing as I've heard. However, I can't really settle my feelings on it, it's so different from other Scorsese's I've seen and I feel it really deserves a second viewing in order to get my thoughts in order and fully appreciate it. But yes, it lives up to the hype.

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

Just watched After Hours. Very fun, quirky and rather odd film. It's out of the norm for Scorsese, but carries some of elements and themes his other films also cover. Great performance by Dunne.

9/10

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

I've only seen 4 Scorsese films to date, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, The Aviator, and The Departed (I have Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Cape Fear, and Gangs of New York in my Netflix queue as well), but I think they're each tremendous. Taxi Driver especially floored me, particularly its last scenes (if you've seen it, you know why). Scorsese comes off in interviews - and as reflected in his movies - fiercely intelligent, and knowing precisely what he wants and how to work with his people to get it. I watched Goodfellas (finally) just a few nights ago, and it feels painstakingly authentic - obviously he really does know this world. And the music selection in that one is one of the most eclectic I've ever heard. Marty is a master.

Btw, if Goodfellas impressed you with the authentic feel to the world of the mafia, watch Mean Streets, it's the place Scorsese came right out of and it's a very gritty, authentic film capturing the feel of living on the streets of New York.

I watched The King of Comedy a few nights ago, and thought it was great. Great as a film, and I think it's a fantastic companion piece to Taxi Driver. As far as De Niro performances go, I think only his performance in Raging Bull is better. Which is saying alot.

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

Apparently Scorsese's next (after Shutter Island) is a Sinatra biopic. I assume he'll take a similar approach as he did with The Aviator, focusing on a choice time period rather than doing a "best-of" for the figure's whole life. The rumor is that the two leading contenders for ol' blue eyes are Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp. What a shock, a Scorsese and DiCaprio team-up. Frankly, I dislike both of those ideas. And that may be the first time I've said I would be against Depp playing a part, he's certainly my favorite actor.

It's looking like Sinatra will be his next film, however, I'd much rather Scorsese do Silence. The story is fantastic, he's got two excellent actors up for it (Benicio Del Toro, Daniel Day Lewis), it's a film Scorsese has been wanting to make for the past decade, and we know from several past experiences when Scorsese gets behind something he feels strongly for, he hits it out of the ballpark.

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

I may get this set for my birthday...

http://www.amazon.com/Scorsese-Colle...cmu_pg__header

I already own Goodfellas, but I can give it away or sell it, because getting four of those for that deal is so good.

It's got his debut feature film (Who's That Knocking At My Door), which is the only of the bunch I haven't seen.

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

I recently saw Taxi Driver. I hate to say it but this is the worst Scorsese film I've seen. I've seen Taxi Driver, Casino, Goodfellas, The Aviator, The Departed, and Gangs of New York. I just found Taxi Driver to be very boring, though I do like the ending. It's ambiguous, which I like.

Have any of you seen the trailer for Shutter Island? My God does it look to be fantastic and creepy as hell. I love it when Scorsese teams up with DiCaprio. It's also nice to see Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach in Watchmen) in a new movie.

Re: Martin Scorsese Films

Taxi Driver is your least favorite, really?! It's my second favorite, almost edges Raging Bull as my fave honestly.

Just updated the list after seeing Boxcar Bertha, though amateurish (though in fairness to Marty, he was clearly working on a very small budget, and I believe this was only his second feature film), you can see signs of a true master already. You can see his trademark editing style already, and plenty of the cinematography is downright impressive. Very underrated film.

Hey DML1991, why did you give The Departed a 9.5/10 instead of a 10/10?

In regards to Taxi Driver, I was bored until the end of the film. It felt longer than it really was.

I feel like it loses some of the steam that I love about the film in it's last 30 minutes. There's plenty of excellent scenes in the last 30 minutes, but I really love the kinetic energy of the editing style and pace to alot of what comes before it. It's only a minor quibble that I feel like I'm exaggerating just saying it, as like I said, there's plenty of excellent scenes during that particular segment.

I like the score you've given Casino, DML1991. That's my favorite Scorsese film out of the one's I've seen. I have Netflix now and I'll put Raging Bull on there.
