Welcome to CoS Graphics Contest

General Rules:
changed in November 7th, 2008!!!

General Rules The following rules apply to all sections of the graphics contest: Each week a number of challenges will be presented. You may enter as many challenges as you wish. All graphics must be your own original work. You may use pre-bases though. All graphics must abide CoS Forums family friendly rules. Violation of these rules will be reported promptly. Images may be any shape provided they are within the Size Guidelines (see below). You may include brushes, textures, text, etc., unless otherwise told. You may animate, unless otherwise told.

Theme Challenges:

The Theme Challenges include three categories, based on their size (see Size Guideline):
- Theme Avatar
- Theme Signature
- Theme Banner

• The same rules apply to all three categories, the only difference is the size of the image.
• There will be different subjects for each category.
• You may make one entry for each category.
• The winner of each category will be able to suggest the subject for the next week. When you post an entry for a Theme Challenge, please write what subject you would like to use for that category if your entry is voted the winner.
• If the winner fails to provide a subject for the next week, the maintainers will choose.

NEW Base Challenge:

The Base Challenge involves making a graphic using the image provided as a starting point. The size of the graphics is avatar, unless otherwise stated.

• You must use the image that is provided.
• The image may need to be cropped and/or resized.
  
• You may make one icon. Text may be used, but is not required.
• You may not use any other images besides those already in the graphic.
  
• The winner of the Base Challenge will be able to choose a base that will be used in the future. The winner will have one week to choose a good quality Harry Potter related picture and send it via owl to one of the maintainers.
• If the winner fails to provide a base, or if the chosen base doesn't fit the standards, the maintainers will choose.

NEW Text Challenge:
The Text Challenge involves making a graphic based on a quote from the Harry Potter novels. The size of the graphic is avatar, unless otherwise stated.

• The graphic must contain at least 3 consecutive words from the provided quote.
• You may only use words that are a part of the quote.
  
• You may make one icon. Images may be used but are not required.
• You may not shorten words, and you may not combine words already in the quote to make a different word that is not provided in the initial quote.
  
• The winner of the Text Challenge will be able to choose a quote that will be used in the future. The winner will have one week to choose a quote from the Harry Potter books and send it via owl to one of the maintainers. The quotation should be at least 2 sentences long, and no longer than 5 sentences.
• If the winner fails to provide a quote, or if the chosen quote doesn't fit the standards, the maintainers will choose.

NEW EXTRA CHALLENGE:

Each week we will promote some kind of graphic element or concept (like 'text', 'humor' or 'odd coloring'). It will be an 'extra challenge' that incorporates all the challenges of the week.

• There's no need to participate.
• To join the extra challenge, you'll have to use the chosen element/concept of the week in one or more of your entries.
• No graphics will be made especially for this challenge. The graphic element/concept should be applied to one or more of the existing challenges.
• In the end of the week, during the usual voting, people will choose among all the entries, the graphic they think used the technique in the best way.
• The winner of the Extra Challenge will get a special prize banner

Size Gudelines Avatars: Width: 75 to 125 pixels Height: 75 to 125 pixels Signatures: Width: 200 to 300 pixels Height: 200 to 300 pixels Banners: Width: 200 to 300 pixels Height: 100 to 150 pixels

Submissions start Saturday midnight GMT, and go until Friday midnight GMT. (see F.A.Q. for information on timezones conversion) A notice will be posted in this thread when submissions open or close. You may change your entries while submissions are being accepted. Entries submitted or changed after submissions are closed will not be counted.

Voting:

Voting starts on Friday midnight GMT, and goes until Saturday midnight GMT (see F.A.Q. for information on timezones conversion) All the entries for each challenge will be displayed in a single table. Links for those tables will be posted when voting begins. A notice will be posted in this thread when voting begins or ends. Vote for the overall best icon (look at quality most) in each category. Do not vote for yourself or get other people to vote for you.

Timezone Conversions:        To find out the local time for when the entries are closed for you, you may use the Time Zone Converter. To use it, uncheck the “Use current date/time” box, then put in the time and date for the GMT time, such as the GMT time for the close of submissions. Then select your time zone from the list on the right hand side, and then click on the “Convert” button. This will tell you what the GMT time will be in your own local time. We welcome graphics makers of any skill level.    Where can I find pictures to use in my graphics?:        This post on Live Journal by Evita82 has a list of lots of sites that provide Harry Potter images. If you have any difficulty in finding an specific image, you can ask in the thread. We'll do our best to help.

Btw you guys,I use PS CS3 Extended, but the text wont work? I can use a size 72 font but the text will all come out to be small text. I tried resetting the tool and everything but no luck. Can anyone help?

I'm going to try dipping my toes in the graphics contest. Trying to figure out Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.

I tried to put some text in with PSE7, but couldn't figure it out. I wanted to put something like, "I have an idea" or at least "An idea" or something like that in there (whatever would fit and be readable), but I couldn't get it to show. Barely managed this cropping and resizing. EDIT: Hey, I managed to use Photobucket to get my text on the avatar.

If I manage to complete something else, I'll edit it in here.

Any and all advice/critique is welcome.
