Re: Rate the Last Film you've seen

Hmm, well I saw quite a few movies in the past week and a half at my grandparents but most of them were quite un-memorable and/or TV only specials on Lifetime and Hallmark (cheesy and predictable **** they watch) so I'll just (as the thread states) rate the last film I saw

Identity- 8/10

Very good for what it was- A bit of a horror film, which is the 1 genre I don't typically watch...but it was also a suspenseful mystery thriller that kept me entertained and guessing till the end. Oh, and there is a pretty shocking twist, like Fight Club but with more identities

Re: Rate the Last Film you've seen

Psycho (1960 version) - A+
Simply put, the best horror film ever made. I wish filmmakers would take a look at this before making their films when making a horror film, and I don't mean to replicate it, but to look at a horror film that is actually sophisticated (unlike much of the horror **** that comes out every year), and well, has heart. You didn't get much better than Hitchcock, and still don't.

Office Space - A-
I would have given this a slightly lower grade on first viewing, but I liked it so much I rewatched it three hours later and surprisingly enjoyed it even more the second time. I'm not a fan of comedy because I find most films from the genre worse on repeat viewings, because besides a few films, the jokes are much less funny the second time around. Not the case here, everything about it is funnier the second time. Every expression, every line of dialogue, it's just pure hilarity.

GI Joe-The Rise of Cobra 6.5/10

It was pretty good, I know they changed some things. (at one point my 10 year old son pointed at the screen and whispered "that's not right!!" )

The Ugly Truth - 8/10

It was so funny! And the end was very cute, if predictable. I do love romantic comedies!

I absolutely loved the film and I thought the cast was fantastic Ellen Page especially is brilliant. So is Michael Cera

Alien Trespass - 7/10

Done in the style of those 50's sci fi classics. It was sort of a cross between The Day The Earth Stood Still and It Came From Outer Space.
Hokey but sweet. It didn't feel forced. Not a spoof, but an honest homage or style replication.

Re: Rate the Last Film you've seen

I Love You, Man - 6.5/10
It was a cute movie, something I'd rent and watch with some friends. It wasn't as funny as I expected, though. Paul Rudd could have done better, IMO.

Milk - 10/10
Absolutely fantastic. Superb acting, especially from Sean Penn. An inspiring, moving film.

Revolutionary Road - 7/10
I'm mixed about this. Kate Winslet, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Michael Shannon acted brilliantly. But ... there was something off about the story. It was good, but not as good as it could have been

Catch Me If You Can - 9/10
I can't believe I hadn't seen it before then. It was a lighthearted film that had a heart.

Gattaca - 8/10
I love this film. It raises ethical questions about science and how far it can go. It's very interesting to watch, especially with the controversy over genetic engineering.

The Big Lebowski - A+ (rewatch)
Without a doubt, to this day, the best comedy ever made. Everything about it is perfect. It's so perfect that you have to think "hey... how did this ever come together when it did?", makes you long for more movies like this, which leaves you disappointed, but hey, there's always the Dude to return to (which brings me to something else, I've seen it three times and it only gets funnier every time).

Re: Rate the Last Film you've seen

Judd Apatow's Funny People is the second worst film I've seen this year, behind Star Trek. He needs to stop making movies. He peaked with The 40 Year Old Virgin and everything he has directed/produced since then has been extremely bad. Funny People is not that funny. I laughed maybe two or three times. Actually, I just chuckled. Most of the jokes are about the male nether region and it is overplayed. Even the drama aspect of the film doesn't work. There are no likable characters; they are all horrible. The film clocks in at 2 hours and 19 minutes excluding the closing credits. It dragged on and on. I will never watch anything Apatow directs and/or produces again in the future. I have been let down too many times. I give the movie a 4/10.

Edit: I just returned from seeing District 9. My God is this an excellent film. This completely blows Star Trek out of the water. 9/10.

My main criticism is that Buttercup was a complete pushover.

Re: Rate the Last Film you've seen

Just saw District 9. That was, for lack of a better word, intense. It's what I'd call fantastic realism, which is an intriguing style for Sci-Fi. I loved that for once the aliens aren't portrayed as man-eating, slobbering beasts bent on enslaving the human race for the Earth's resources. I found myself sympathizing with them throughout the film and even found them oddly beautiful, despite the fact that they're pretty much overgrown intelligent humanoid-crustaceans. The little baby alien was actually so adorable I wouldn't mind having it for a pet. The father/son relationship was very endearing.

There was some disturbing imagery, and a few graphic shots I wouldn't have minded them taking out, but overall it was a very interesting film. The last ten minutes or so were extremely moving, especially that last shot. I'm awful at giving a rating out of 10, so I'll just say it's definitely worth a watch, and it left me with quite a few things to think about.

Gandhi- 10/10.

I doubt I'd ever love a film so much or find a film as perfect as this. It's such a masterpiece and no matter how many times I watch it, I'm so in awe of how brilliant the cast is, the script is and how beautifully it connects with you. A great tribute to one of the greatest men that ever lived.

Re: Rate the Last Film you've seen

Memento- 9/10

Quite an incredible film but I docked a point because of it's confusing nature...gotta be one of the most confusing films I've ever seen

It was interesting how the film played with the timeline, both jumping back in time and also progressing forward (in the b/w sequences)

I think I got the gist of it but I have a few un-answered questions:

Spoiler: show

1. Who was he talking to on the phone? Teddy, Natalie, or someone else?

2. Why did he hire the hooker and make those strange requests of her?

3. Had he been placed in a psychiatric institute before and escaped?

Re: Rate the Last Film you've seen

District 9

10/10!!!

It was very intense and you have to like the turn away from the traditional brave humans defending our species against the bad aliens type of film which was a great thing. Lily I also liked the little alien and the father/son relationship was very nice to watch. And I was very happy with the ending.

A very small budget, non Hollywood, no recognizable actors and it was the one of the most original alien movies I've ever seen. I have nothing to criticize about it! And better yet its a nice slap in the face to Hollywood. It doesn't take over a 100 million dollar budget to make a great movie.

I'll be seeing this at least two-three more times in theaters.

Re: Rate the Last Film you've seen

District 9 - 10/10

Great, great movie. I love how we're meant to feel sympathetic towards the aliens rather than the humans. It definitely made me emotional, so sad when
Spoiler: show
they force Wikus to shoot the one prawn when he's changing into one himself. And I was worried Christopher was going to die ever since they introduced him. I was so glad he didn't though. I was also sad only Christopher and his son got away, but I'm sure he'll keep his word and come back. The ending was also very sad, but sweet at the same time with Wikus leaving his wife the metal flower thing, and then showing him as a prawn.
The action and the weapons were cool as well. I was looking forward to this movie, and I'm glad it held up to, and even passed, my expectations.
