Re: Halloween Treats

Hey, I feel like bumping this thread because it's nearly Hallowe'en (well, nearly for me, I spend all year waiting for Hallowe'en)

Ok, I'm not great on quantities and stuff, I just make stuff to taste but here are a few I've made over the years:

Mummy's Fingers

Really simple, just buy some sausages (I bought normal size and chopped them in half but you could do it with chipolatas) and bought some shortcrust pastry. Wrapped the pastry round the sausages to look like bandages, baked, and voila! People loved them.

Witches' Fingers

All you have to do is find a biscuit recipe you like, but instead of making them round, shape them like fingers. Take some flaked almond pieces and dye them with red food colouring (warning; cochineal is HARD to get off clothing and work surfaces so be extra careful with red food colouring) then press a "fingernail" into the "finger" and bake for the required time. Here's a photo of how mine turned out:

Spiced Cider (Alcoholic, not for underagers)

Take a bottle of cider (I use uber cheap-o Sainsbury's cider) add apple juice to taste. I usually use one big 3L bottle of cider and two 250ml bottles of Copley's apple juice. Oh, you need to be doing this in a big pan over a low heat because if the cider's carbonated you want to try and make it go flat. Trust me on this one. Keep stirring until no bubbles come up. Add honey to taste. Add some spices to taste (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, that sort of thing - but either add the ground sort or add them in a muslin bag cause you don't want bits of clove in it when it's done). You're aiming for quite a smooth apple-y taste with a bit of spice to it. This is best served warm (get some fancy glass cups, I have loads just for this purpose and it looks excellent). You can serve with a cinnamon stick in and with whipped cream (It's really not hard to make your own whipped cream). I can't remember if I add anything else. My recipes are just trial and error TBH. But this is my all-time favourite drink in the autumn. Could easily be made into a non-alcoholic version by just ommitting the cider - then it would just be spiced apple juice

Chocolate Apples

These are something of a tradition in my family for Hallowe'en. All you need is apples, some wooden lolly sticks, cooking chocolate and whatever you want to decorate. Just push the sticks into the apples, melt the chocolate and dip apple into chocolate until it's fully covered. Note: these will drip like crazy, it's best to either stand them in some polystyrene while they dry, or do what I do and prop a grill shelf up somewhere, like between the micowave and tosater, and pop the apples in the slots to dry. Before they are dry, decorate them. You can do anything from a simple face (smarties for eyes, nose and mouth) to fancy "Rocky road" apples with nuts, marshmellows etc on. But be aware of the weight of your decorations because the chocolate will be somewhat runny!

It's also very easy to make ordinary foods "Hallowe'eny." Like spider cupcakes (just ice them white and then pipe on rings of darrk icing. Drag a toothpick through to make a spiderweb pattern) or graveyard brownies (just pipe "RIP" onto some biscuits, ice brownies with chocolate ganache, stick the iced biscuit in for a tombstone and sprinkle some crumbs -oreo crumbs work well - for "graveyard dirt.")

I've got loads more lol will add more later. Hallowe'en is the best holiday of the year IMO.
