Amazon has listed a new version of the soundtrack: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -Part 1: Limited Edition Collector's Box Set soundtrack. Here's an image:

Soundtrack Collector's Box Set:

I like the look of it! What intrigues me the most is that the set includes four discs. The question is what does these CDs contain? You can also see in the image a score sheet; don't know if it will include the score sheets for all the tracks (The image features the sheet paper of track 3, if you loke close enough, you can see they edited the track name...)

What are your thoughts?
Wow I am so compelled to buy! I bought the special edition they released for the Order of the Phoenix soundtrack, it wasn't expensive but then again the only difference was a speical booklet and a very cool looking velvet case. This special edition looks well worth the money though! I'm so intrigued by the multiple cds also, is it true there's going to be bonus material? We hear music throughout the movies that don't appear on the soundtracks like when Harry meets Ollivander or when Harry meets Kreacher, minor scores like these could make up the extra material?

THE SAMPLES ARE OUT!!!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00494M52O/ <--- Yup, they are 30 seconds previews on Amazon UK, not much to go on. The stand outs for me are 'Obliviate', 'Snape to Malfoy Manor' and 'Ministry of Magic'.
Okay early favourite already is 'Polyjuice Potion'

EDIT Okay, turns out everyone is talking about it in the Deathly Hallows thread

Ah brilliant, thanks!
Okay definitely well worth the money in my opinion! Just look at what we get... A numbered Certificate of Authencity, Film cells, a signed music sheet, a poster, a vinyl AND bonus material?! Okay I know I just relisted everything again but man this is the most generous offering yet, they must be so proud of this score!

I'd love to have the Lovegood track as a ringtone. It reminds me of classy elevator music, with Xenophilius standing inside the confined space, bobbing his head up and down.

Re: Deathly Hallows Composer

What do you think Ron's Speech is referring to?

Is it his "I can't do it" speech before they destroy the locket from the book?

Or is it when he's telling them how he came back to them?

It comes after Destroying the Locket so I guess it's the latter.

Anyhow, it's probably my favourite =)

Re: Deathly Hallows Composer

Maybe they had Ron make a big epic speech like Sam in Two Towers.

"It's like the great stories, Mr. Potter. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Cause how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad has happened? But you know it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. And when the sun shines it will shine all the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That MEANT something. Even if you were too small to understand. But you know, Mr. Potter, I think I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back but they kept going. Because they were holding on to something. They had something worth fighting for."

Joking aside, if it weren't already used in Two Towers, something like this would have fit very nicely into this film. Especially because wizarding fairy tales and stories are introduced in this film.

Yeah, I mentioned that in the DH thread.
Apparently, the digital booklet was released too, and in it, Yate's said as soon as he heard one of the songs, he offered Desplat the job for Part 2 on the spot. I sure hope he accepted!

Re: Deathly Hallows Composer

MovieMusicUK has reviewed the soundtrack. Their vedict? 5/5.

Here's an excerpt:

Quote:
Desplat’s music is fully orchestral and choral, performed with gusto by the London Symphony Orchestra and various choirs, alongside various specialist solo instruments ranging from the common (guitars, recorders) to the slightly unusual (a mandolin, a shakuhachi bamboo flute) to the downright peculiar, most notably a theorbo, which is a kind of a baroque long-necked lute. One thing I love about the score is that it is, in every way, a Desplat score: it features many of his personal stylistic trademarks, from the use of woodwinds as percussion, to the interpolation of a synth pulse to add more bass to certain sequences, the use of precise timpani rhythms, and specific phrasings in the string and brass writing which will be immediately recognizable to anyone who has followed Desplat’s career. I am very pleased that he has not been forced to supplant his musical identity in order to fit the needs of the film, and has instead tweaked it in the right direction of his own accord, adding only the necessary amounts of magic to the mix.

Interesting! I'm a little disappointed that Hedwig's Theme only appears in a few of the songs, and only very briefly and quietly, but I'm fairly certain it will do so in the film. I'm glad it's got a great score; this is shaping up to be one of the best Potter scores to date, but it doesn't look like it'll be beating PoA any time soon

Re: Deathly Hallows Composer

I think it will easily be one of the more interesting scores to come out of the franchise since PoA (seriously, the range of instruments that Desplat employed is downright weird, but in the best of ways imaginable), although I appreciate them all in different ways.

However, ever since Desplat was appointed the composer of Part I, I hoped for one thing: that he would be able to compose a soundtrack that not only differentiates itself from the previous ones due to the nature of Deathly Hallows as a story, but allows him to retain his distinct voice in the process. It sounds like that balance has been achieved and we will have a score that lets the emotions that have been established in the previous films reach maximum intensity.

"In fact, as we recorded one track the other day, Ron Returns, it so
enchanted me, and everyone in the control room, I had to offer him the
job of writing the music for part two on the spot after hearing it."

That's David Yates confirming that Desplat has been at least been offered to write for Part Two.

Yeah, I think that was mentioned in a leaked digital booklet for the soundtrack. I'm not sure what I think of this news: while Desplat was great, I think I'd rather have Williams back for the film. Desplat, I think, is better suited for the emotional drive of Part 1, whereas Williams is far more capable of the intense action-battle sequences of Part 2.

I'm so excited! The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : Part 1 reviews era has officially begun.

This article makes me happy, however I don't like the "no main theme" statement. I don't want the score to be forgettable.

He calls it one of the best scores of the year in spite of this. That doesn't sound "forgettable" to me. Even if there's no main theme, a lot of the themes seem to tie into each other, such as Snape to Malfoy Manor in the Death Eaters track, etc.

After hearing Sky Battle, I have no issues about Desplat's ability to conduct thrilling action pieces.

I'm leaning towards Williams when it comes to battle scenes as well. "Sky Battle" sounds like just a bunch of random instruments being played, making me more frustrated than involved.

Desplat does create some emotional pieces though.

To me, describing Sky Battle that way does it a complete and utter disservice. There's far more complexity to the arrangement of the instruments, and I'm sure Desplat, being the professional that he is, had a very clear structure in mind for it. If I'm being honest with myself, I like it a lot more than many of the action pieces that Williams produced for the first three films.

MovieMusicUK describes it more clearly than I can:

Quote:
Anyone familiar with Desplat’s action music from scores such as Firewall, The Golden Compass and The Ghost Writer from earlier this year will be thrilled by the dynamite string runs which leap up and down scales with boundless energy, which this time around are accompanied by all manner of orchestral mayhem and choral accents. “Sky Battle” features a wonderful string phrase underneath the action which sounds like a deconstructed, slightly off-kilter version of Hedwig’s theme, but which is quickly usurped by the vivacious, attention-grabbing orchestral performances that surround it.
Its structure is arranged in such a way that it captures the confusion of the chase without compromising the power of the orchestra. Its instruments are very specific and precise, but they are applied in a way that, again, is not disengaged from the wild emotions of the scene.

Bathilda Bagshot also sounds like another great action piece, although it's more atmospheric.

I also have to disagree with this. Sky Battle is a wonderful piece, although I do prefer what Williams did to Sky Battle. It's involving and does not sound like random instruments; rather, it sounds to me like a well-structured piece. However, I do find it to be a bit contrived compared to the rest of the more emotional pieces on the soundtrack. Williams' pieces, IMHO, never sound contrived but still go the way you may expect them to.

I'll disagree about it sound being contrived because, again, I think it's beautifully consistent with the rest of the soundtrack in that it's not strictly concerned with sounding pretty: it strives to remain completely in step with the emotions of the moment, and while that may make it technically less conventional after the first listen because it's as chaotic as the chase itself, it results in a piece that is not only engaging, but sincere.

Sky Battle, Bathilda Bagshot, and Polyjuice Potion (which splendidly captures the sensation of changing form but also has a certain nobility to it to indicate the intentions behind the change) are already some of my favorite tracks not only out of the soundtrack for Deathly Hallows Part I, but of the series in its entirety. And I'm confident about this viewpoint even before listening to the entire soundtrack.

As an emerging talent, Desplat is so continually interesting that I'm far more curious to see what he does with Part II than Williams.
