George losing his ear is really shocking. The Seven Potters thing is kind of comical, but then that happens and you realize, "oh ****, this book is going to be rough."

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
When Sirius dies, I was shocked. Sat with the book in my little hands and my jaw just dropped - I felt Harry's pain, how much can one poor person take before going a little crazy is my question.
Also, the Hermione torture scene is horrific, really emotional.

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
I'm re-reading DH at the moment, so I'm finding a lot of these.
The bit about Mary Cattermole's questioning being on the same day as the trio's infiltration of the ministry is horrifying. I dunno why, that part just really shocks me every time.

I still find it hard to read about Dumbledore drinking the poison in the cave. It felt so sad and awkard.

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Dumbledore's death by far.
Molly rushing into the Great Hall to take on Bellatrix. My mouth was hanging open while reading that scene, all the while cheering for Molly and thinking about how very dangerous it is to tick off a mama bear like her. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
When Sirius died. I just did not see that coming, at all.
And when Snape turned out to be good. I have always loathed Snape with a passion, so that was quite shocking.

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Hedwig dying was a complete shock, I really didn't expect the owl to get killed.
Also, Harry using Sectumsempra on Malfoy. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Book 1.) It wasn't Snape. It wasn't even Voldemort.
Book 2.) Nothing really. Book 3.) Sirius being good, Scabbers being bad. Book 4.) Moody being Barty Crouch Jr. Book 5.) They guard the wizard prison, Azkaban. Book 6.) Snape kills Dumbledore. Book 7.) I predicted almost every plot twist, so I'd say Fred or "Draco malfoy is the true master of the elder wand". Speaking of which, where is the "stuff i got right" thread? Anyone have a link? |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Dumbledore being killed by snape. I'd have to agree with the others here, I did not see that coming at all. It was a mega shock, I could've probably handled Dumbledore being killed by someone else, that I knew was evil, but with Snape I was like D:

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
I wasn't really shocked by all the blase' deaths in DH. I think they reflected the price that had to be paid when the WW was at war. I really had to re read Petunia's outburst at knowing about dementors. I hadn't realised she said it until I re read it!
Although I worked out there was something going on between Snape and Lily due to Snape's memory I was still shocked at how close they had been during their early years at school |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
A few things shocked...acually I think I would just say surprised...me
1. Sirius' death: he was a beloved character and was basically Harry's salvation from the Dursleys and he dies. we didn't know much about him other than he was James' best mate and lifelong friend. would of been nice to see him stay. 2. Fred's death: now this I will call a shocker. not only was he a loved character but he is one I NEVER would of seen J.K. killing off..Percy maybe but not Fred. 3. Mad Eye's death: from what we are told Mad-Eye is the biggest Baddest auror there is and he gets killed. never saw that coming there are others I am sure but these are the freshest in my mind as it has been awhile lol will post more as I remember

In DH, I remember the first shock was in the Seven Potters, when George's ear was cut. It's not that I didn't expect casualties and even death. But never in the previous books had magic caused such an injury. Even Avada Kedavra doesn't leave any horrible signs. Not even Sectumsempra, when used on Draco!

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
A lot of people seem to find the deaths (Dobby, Fred, Mad-Eye Moody, Hedwig, Snape, Tonks, Lupin, etc.) in DH shocking. I kind of expected it, to be honest. From the first page on, I knew that this book was something darker and more evil than the last ones. And when Rowling killed off Professor Burbage, I knew there would be a lot more deaths. So everytime a character died, I wasn't really shocked. I knew some important and very loved characters would have to die in order to make it more realistic.
Some major things that did shocked me were Dumbledore's death (killed by Snape?!), Scabbers being an animagus, 'Mad-Eye Moody' actually being Barty Crouch Jr., that it was Ginny that opened the Chamber of Secrets and that Ron actually walked out of Harry and Hermione in DH. Oh, and mrs. Weasley cursing: "Not my daughter, you..." know the rest. ![]()

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
For me it was Fred's death, mainly because we'd had a conversation about who Jo was going to kill off the day before, and we'd all said "She wouldn't be so cruel enough to kill off one of the twins!".
Dumbledore's death was not really shock, the entire book seemed to prepare the reader for his death. It was inevitable, and it just had to be Snape. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Snape killing Dumbledore was actually a real shocker for me.
Sirius turning out to be good was also a shock. The fact that Umbridge sent the Dementors after Harry in OotP. And Dobby and Fred's deaths. Those were two that I never expected to see die. ![]() Also, the whole Lupin/Tonks thing surprised me. Actually, a lot of stuff happened in the series that I wasn't expecting.

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Perhaps I'm alone on this, but...
In terms of sheer shock value, it was "It’s that Mudblood! Avada Kedavra!" The death toll in itself wasn't to be unexpected as the series progressed, although certainly some deaths were sadder than others. |
