Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
I would say dumbledore's death, the revelation of dumbledore past in DH, and the use of harry's blood to bring back voldemort would rank highly as shocking moments, as would the moment where draco cries in the bathroom in book six, revealing that he is, indeed, a being that is weak, too weary for the task ahead. I mean I always knew he was a weasel, but the weakness with which he carried himself from book six's crying point on made him more human, and consequently more likeable and sympathetic in the remainder of the series. he was a pawn, and for that I was saddened.

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Sirius/Severus' deaths. Also Remus and Tonks and Fred.
I knew after reading OotP that Dumbledore would not make it out of HBP alive. I didn't know how he would die, of course, but he was showing his age in OotP and whether he died by Severus' hand or from old age, he just wasn't making it to the end of the series. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Cedric's death ... or how nonchalant his death was, at the time. They just killed him very casually then moved onto more serious business.
When Harry is still pretending to be dead and his body is presented to the Hogwarts fighters, Voldemort forces the Sorting Hat onto Neville's head and sets it alight. HORRIFYING. So unbelieveably horrifying. I only recently reread the book for a 2nd time and had either missed it on my first read, or forgot. Not Sirius and Snape's deaths but the way they died. Falling through a veil, and being mauled by a big snake. Not what I expected at all. Snape actually loving Lily and knowing her prior to her life at Hogwarts. I know there were theories, but I never believed them. It made sense though and it was done realistically. Hermione's unwavering loyalty to Harry in DH, especially considering Ron's extremely wavering loyalty. FRED'S DEATH. My fave twin. Not shocking, but surprising: Harry naming one of his children after Snape. I loved that. And Dudley caring for Harry. Awwww. Also, "there's no need to call me sir, professor" makes me gasp then giggle every time I read it. Awe. Some. Harry got a lot of good lines in HBP and DH. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
The meaning of the silver doe was a big shock for me because I wasn't expecting Snape to have feelings for Lily when I first read DH.

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
I'd heard the "Harry is a Horcrux" theories prior to reading the seventh book, but I'd always been like "psh, yeah right," and brushed them off, so I was fairly stunned when I realized that they were right.
Also Fred's death. One page he was laughing and joking and everything seemed so normal, and the next BAM. He's gone. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
A lot of the deaths in Deathly Hallows came as a shock to me, Tonks and Lupin was such a shock I remember having to read that bit several times to make sure I'd read it correctly
![]() I didn't read any of the theories before DH came out so Snape loving Lily was a complete shock to me, I remember just getting so caught up in "The Prince's Tale" chapter and just being so emotionally drained after it, taking everything in. As single moments go I think the Bathilda/Nagini moment was one of those moments that completely shocked me straight away when I realised what was happening. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Most shocking was when Dumbledore died. I never expected it. He was a character that was always there, he knew everything. Then suddenly he was gone.
Another thing that shocked me (but in a positive way) was when the true nature of Snape was revealed. I started crying there. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Sirius' death... I never quite got over that one. I got very attached to the character and I remember being fifteen and bawling my eyes out because he was dead... I just could not believe it... still can't... no other death (Dobby and Fred came close) affected me and hurt me as much. You know if a character is well written when you feel like you know them and you actually care...

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
Sirius' death was the most shocking, and it was the hardest to deal with cos he was so important to Harry, it kind made me realise no one was safe, therefore i wasn't a shocked when dumbeldore Fred and dobby died, though i was just as sad.

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
I think it must be Dobby's death. I remember reading it and thinking "Yes, they managed to escape without anyone dying", and then Dobby died. It was so sad. Didn't see it comming

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
The things that shocked me the most were:
1) Snape killing Dumbledore -- I expected Dumbledore to die in book 6, but Snape being the one to kill him was quite a shock. 2) The revelation of Snape's real motives. 3) The deaths of Fred, Dobby, and Tonks. Especially Fred; I didn't think either of the twins would really be killed off. 4) Finding out what Sectumsempra did -- especially the way JKR revealed it, with Harry using it while fighting Draco. 5) Harry being a Horcrux. Think that's it for now. Last edited by DarkMark771; November 24th, 2010 at 12:28 am. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
I was surprised that Snape was in love with Lily. never occurred to me that he loved her and only her. I was surprised that Petunia wanted to go to Hogwarts.
I was shocked at how the Inferi looked getting out of the lake to come after Harry. |

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
1. Dobby's death
2. Fred's death (one of the twins? REALLY?) 3. Harry having to die in order to destroy his Horcruxy bits (The Horcrux part wasn't too shocking for me because I'd heard so many people's theories that even though I disagreed I thought it was a realistic possibility...but I did not for one second think Harry was going to have to DIE! Good god, Rowling knows how to hit readers in the gut!) 4. Hedwig's death (his OWL? Really?) 5. Snape killing Dumbledore (though I never doubted Snape's loyalties - I always thought it was planned) Dobby will always be the most shocking death to me because it was the most unexpected (though I don't think anyone saw Hedwig dying either) and also after his heroic rescue. Oh, Dobby!

Re: Most Shocking Moment in the Series
I'm not sure if you're joking or not...but... Harry wasn't technically a horcrux since Voldemort didn't do it intentionally but he did have a piece of Voldemort's soul in him.

Other shocking moments for me: - Sirius dying - Dumbledore being killed by Snape - the way Snape died and his backstory. I was always adamant he was one of the bad guys - Fred dying, especially just after Percy had apologised
