Gilbert & Sullivan's operatic comedies
Just curious, am I the only person anywhere to actually be a major fan of Gilbert & Sullivan's operatic comedies? Their sophisticated language, satire of Victorian living and culture, and the extreme quality of their music ensnared me while I was in college and has never let go.
I actually saw three professional productions at the City Center in New York last year: The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, and The Mikado. However, my favorite musically speaking is actually their very rarely-performed first collaboration, The Sorcerer. I have never heard of it being performed but in one location, at Manchester University in England some years ago. (One of its songs did technically appear on Family Guy, however.) Unfortunately, that site has lost its mp3 files, although at least I managed to save them and burn them onto CDs for my personal use. My ex-girlfriend's best friend also starred as Mabel in Pirates, an extremely demanding role vocally. Had I any talent myself, I should like to play the Major-General, Sir Joseph, or the Reverend. But tush, I am puling. So, are there any fellow fans here? |

That is an extremely difficult role, particularly the "Take Heart" aria.
