Does anyone know more about this?
Chapter 33 of DH - The Prince's Tale. Right at the beginning of Harry's watching Snape's memories – between Snape telling Lily she was a witch and on the train to Hogwarts.

Given that Hermione is from a Muggle background, I think it is reasonable that she would use a pencil case to store her writing utensils. Perhaps there are also Wizarding versions of pencil cases, but Harry, who also grew up in Muggle schools, would simply recognize them as pencil cases.

For the direct quote:
DH, Ch. 33, The Prince's Tale"You didn't think it was such a freak's school when you wrote to the headmaster and begged him to take you."

Petunia turned scarlet.

"Beg? I didn't beg!"

"I saw his reply. It was very kind."

"You shouldn't have read -' whispered Petunia, 'that was my private – how could you –?"

Lily gave herself away by half-glancing toward where Snape stood. Petunia gasped.

"That boy found it! You and that boy have been sneaking in my room!"

"No – not sneaking -" Now Lily was on the defensive. "Severus saw the envelope, and he couldn't believe a Muggle could have contacted Hogwarts, that's all! He says there must be wizards working undercover in the postal service who take care of -"

"Apparently wizards poke their noses in everywhere!" said Petunia, now as pale as she had been flushed. "Freak!" she spat at her sister, and she flounced off to where her parents stood, leaving Lily hurt and tearful.

Not only did Dumbledore correspond with Petunia at this age, but he also addressed her and Vernon a letter when he left Harry on the doorstep, as well as the Howler in OotP. So we know that Dumbledore and Petunia's "correspondence" equated to at least 3 letters from Dumbledore and 1 from Petunia. Though I wonder if there were more that we do not know of.

Well, I wouldn't put it past Snape to just assume that he would be able to deal with the snake before it could harm Harry. Whether he made the snake appear or whether it was actually Malfoy, I think that Snape did have a part in it, given the suspicious way he whispered in his ear.

I think it's fair to say Snape told Malfoy which spell to perform, and Malfoy cast the spell which made the snake appear. After rereading CoS just recently, I'm fairly certain that Snape just wanted to scare Harry. It says something along the lines of Snape smirked as Harry stared helplessly at the snake, ready to attack. Haha don't quote me on that please, but it was something along those lines! It was just another way for Snape to embarrass Harry.

In Chamber of Secrets:

The Trio were wondering what Riddle did to get an award for Special Services to the School. After a couple other guesses, Ron said, “Maybe he murdered Myrtle; that would have done everyone a favor.” [U.S. hardcover p. 232., CoS Chapter 13] Which of course it turned out he did, and the award was for what turned out to be framing someone else for the crime.

Never really found out what was with Aberforth and goats, but he mentions in Deathly Hallows his sister used to help him with the goats when they were kids. Why this could've lead to him performing strange charms on goats, I don't know, but there are two things worth catching. His pub smells like goats, which could be a nice reminder of his sister and the happy times he had with her, or a way to remind him every day of his life that he might've killed her. His patronus, as well - people get all soppy over Snape's patronus being a doe 'after all these years', but Aberforth's is a goat, and it's just as likely to my eyes it represents his sister as Snape's patronus represents Lily.

Something I realized today is that Dumbledore said that a piece of Voldemort's soul latched itself onto the only living soul left in that collapsed building, but Harry's parents cat was also in the house at the time. Can you picture if Voldemort's soul latched onto the cat?

In HP verse, animals don't have souls.

Well...I think theres a bit of an...undertone with Aberforth and his goats. Its certainly implied what with his "performing inappropriate charms on a goat." That can actually be an innuendo of sorts and Rowling herself even alludes to this. While yes, it could be interpreted into something more innocent like the connection with Ariana but yeah...

This is actually several years old, but it took me a couple re-reads to realize that the reason why Death Eaters were showing up outside No. 12 Grimmauld Place in DH was due to the Trio repeatedly breaking Taboo.

possibly. though the DE's knew that the house belonged to harry and that harry had become close with sirius. made sense to keep an eye on the place.

As someone who's had many cats over the years - and one now - I can imagine it, and it's a terrifying thought.

IIRC they were standing outside #12 without actually seeing the building.

That's possible but the DEs knew Harry had a house and approximately where it was, even though Snape couldn't/wouldn't tell them the exact location. The tongue tying curse was certainly a convenient excuse. Knowing what they knew, it would be common sense for them to keep an eye on the place, knowing that Harry was in hiding and might show up there. We know from the trio's limited communication with the Order over the course of DH that other places where the DEs had reason to believe Harry might go were also being watched.

We also know that the taboo removes all protective enchantments, yet even when Harry says Voldemort's name, the DEs still can't see number 12 so the fidelius charm obviously held. Its possible that as headquarters of the OotP, special defensive enchantments were placed on the house so spells such as the taboo wouldn't break its protections. So the DEs may never have known for sure that Harry was there if it weren't for the apparating mistake.

I've only just realised that Molly was the sister of Fabian and Gideon Prewett.

Re: Things That Took Several Readings To Catch v.9

This is another one that I'm sure others have mentioned, but it took me a couple readings to realize that Fred and George were indirectly responsible (at least partly) for Dumbledore's death.

The Twins put Montague into the Vanishing Cabinet in the 5th book. In the 6th book, when Malfoy has Dumbledore cornered on the Astronomy Tower, he explains that Montague told him that when he was in the cabinet, he could hear what was going on in the school as well as what was going on in Borgin and Burkes. This led Draco to fix the broken cabinet in the school and allow it to bridge the store and the school, thus giving a route in for the Death Eaters.

Just after Dumbledore announced that Snape was the new DADA teacher Harry says: 'That job's jinxed. Noone's lasted more than a year...Quirrell actually died doing it. Personally, I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for another death...'
I think its horrible that he got what he wanted, even though the death obviously wasn't what he had in mind.

I don't think Harry ever really would have wanted Snape to die or meant these words when he spoke them. Harry and Snape were enemies - and Harry was still dealing with Sirius's death at the time which he held Snape partially responsible for.

I loved going back and re-reading POA, and realizing that when Harry and Ron read each other's tea leaves in their first divination class, everything they see in the leaves does eventually come true. Ron does suffer (the loss of his brother) but is very happy (marrying Hermione and having children). Harry does work for the Ministry of Magic and receives an unexpected amount of gold when he wins the Triwizard Tournament. Maybe Ron and Harry did have the inner eye after all
