JK Rowling's new book: The Casual Vacancy

It has been confirmed that JK Rowling is to publish a novel for adults - there aren't many details confirmed yet, but there are still 2 very excited fans in this house awaiting further details!

I'll read it regardless of what genre it is because I'm just so excited and I've been waiting (as have so many of us) for ages to read something new that Jo's written. This is brilliant news!

As a rule, I'm skeptical about things that are highly anticipated so as not to get my hopes up really high and set myself up for disappointment but I think this news is exciting.

I wonder if she will continue in the fantasy genre?

I don't want to get my hopes up too much either, but I'd love to see how JKR handles the new novel and where she'll go from here.

I'm really excited for this. I'm guessing it will be the Fairytale for Adults which was mentioned a few years ago. Can't wait!

I have complete faith in Jo, even though it's not Potter I don't think she'll disappoint. This lady's mind is amazing. I'm definitely looking forward to what she's got in store for us. This is so weird though that it's for adults, funny actually since most of us grew up with Harry and now are adults.

I agree with this. Im trying really hard not to have expectations because Im afraid ill be let down. But i am really interested to see what she is writing now. Im a bit torn as to whether i think its fantasy or something else. I feel like she would venture into something completely different just so her next work wont be compared to HP so harshly.

If I was JKR I'd try to do something completely different to HP so that it wouldn't be compared and it would prove that I could do more than just write a fantasy children's series. So while I'd like the new novel to be another fantasy series but this time aimed at adults, I really doubt that's the case

And, of course, there's no question as to whether I'll read it or not. I tend to read a bit of everything anyway so I'll definitely be buying this as soon as it comes out

I had heard her mention once that the next book she was working on was a crime novel. If so, that would be interesting to read.

I recall that in the past she mentioned working on detective/mystery novels for adults post-Potter. Obviously she has a tough act to follow up (understatement of the century) but whatever she writes will be incredible, I'm sure. This book is likely to be less of my preferred genre than Potter was, but I have no doubt I will buy it and devour it anyways because of whose name is on the cover.

I was hoping she would do a crime or mystery novel - it seems like it would fit her style. Either way, I'm excited, though apprehensive about the response - mainly how strongly people will compare it to HP (regardless of genre)

I was under the impression that the crime-genre story didn't come from a reputable source... However I have heard Rowling herself mention the political fairytale that she has been working on for a while now - I beleive she's said she's worked on it between 'Potters'. If anything, I think it's that, and I'll read anything of hers without question

Given that I won't buy it without question I'd have preferred she published under another name (at least initially) so the book would be judged on its own merits.

I can see why she decided to go with a different publisher for this reason.

I personally probably wouldn't buy it at first - more likely get it from the library.

It seems to have originated from some fun had by Ian Rankin. That said, crime and thrillers make up a big part of Little Brown's list so it's not an unreasonable assumption.

I feel the same way. It could be dada poetry composed of jumbling up the phone book and I'll still buy it and read it and put it on the shelf with my Potter books (they occupy a whole shelf because I have them in 3 languages). I'm a devotee for life.

I'm so excited. I reckon it'll be a mystery type thing. I actually am getting my hopes up though because I'm pretty sure it'll be amazing.
