I would say that the movies can give us hints as to what's important in future MOVIES and we can take from that and figure out what's important in future books, but if you go directly from the movies to the books, you might get disappointed.

i really dont think that the movies will help determine what happens in future books. i would be a little bit differnt if Jo was the director of the movies. then she could enphasize what is more inportant for the plot of all the books

I think the films can help us to determine some things, but nothing large to the plot of future books.

I don't have the POA book handy, so could somebody verify the movie scene in which Lupin is teaching Harry the Patronus Charm. In the movie, Harry says that he finds his happiest memory is one of his dad - but he doesn't even know if it is true or not. Is this how the book explains his success with the charm or was it inserted into the movie to make the last battle with the demetors scene more plausible to non-readers?

Also, was Harry's explanation for sparing Pettigrew the same in book and movie? In the movie, Harry clearly says he spared Pettigrew because Sirius could only be vindicated if Peter were shown to be alive. I don't remember Harry having such clear insight in the book.

I believe you're right. Harry states in the book that his happy memory is when he found out he was a wizard and was leaving the Dursleys; he doesn't mention his dad at all. And Harry does NOT have such insight into vindicating Sirius - he just doesn't want to see a living person killed in front of him.

Ron/Hermione/Harry

Did anyone find it bothersome that Harry and Hermione held hands every time they ran somewhere in PoA? What 13 year olds hold hands? When I was 13 I'd rather kiss a Wookie than hold a boy's hand.

I know the books and movies forshadow Ron and Hermione, but let's face it, intellect and skill, Hermione and Harry are a better match. And JK did say that the PoA filmmakers did forshadow stuff without her telling them what was coming in the future books. Could this be one of those things?

In both PoA and GoF, Harry and Hermione spend more time together alone than Ron and Hermione, and by OotP, Ron and Hermione are down right nasty to each other at times. Harry actually walks away from them he gets so frustrated listening to them argue. Then again, James and Lily hated eachother by the time of their OWLs and they ended up married. So maybe JK is repeating the subplot.

But wouldn't it be even more similar a relationship to James and Lily to have Harry and Hermione together? Think about it. James was a great Quidditch player, always in trouble. So is Harry. Lily was an extremely bright witch who was uncommonly kind. So is Hermione. Lupin says she's the brightest witch of her age. And when she tries to speak to Lupin after he's transformed into a Werewolf, putting herself in danger. Isn't that a superb act of kindness? Perhaps Lily did the same or similar thing when she and Lupin were in school?

Hmmm, something to think about.

I was rewatching the special features on COS the other day, and JKR said that there was a lot of foreshadowing, but involving relationships that happen later in the books. So I guess we should all look out for that!

The Island in HP films

YOu know the island at the centre of the lake at Hogwarts? Do you think it will hold any signifigance in the series or the last two books? It's been shown too often to just be there as scenery in my opinion. Maybe it's where the supposed secret grave yard is hidden, as JK has mentioned this movie as having many visual clues as to what will happen in the rest of the series.

Ah, very good thought, yes it could be where the graveyard is, but remember, the island isn't mentioned in the books.

what island?

i just finished re-re-reading GoF paying specific attention to anything that suck out as odd, or clues, or hints, or just flat out strange, the island would have been one of them.... yet i did not see/read it at all...

that goes for the other books too, i've skimmed through them since reading them and still cannot recall reading anything about an island...

unless the Durmstrang ship could be considered an island, or the squid when it surfaces...

There is? Maybe it is just an island.

I agree, i think it will just be a normal island. And yes, there is in PoA and there is a deleted scene on the CoS DVD where he is sitting on it, but you don't see any graves so i think it is just an island.

the lake they filmed probably had an island in it as most large lakes do... i sincerely doubt that anything that is largely important to the series will be introduced for the 1st time in HBP or BK7

Sorry I haven't had time to read the thread, so I don't know what the subtopic is right now, but I will express my opinion about the thread's name. I have stated this in other posts, but I will repeat it: I believe that the movies will not affect anything that is in the books, hint about anything that could be in the books, or change the way the books are portrayed. They are merely a theatrical interpretation of the books. Cuaron has even admitted that JKR would not let him add certain things to POA, since it might spoil books later on.

They are movies. Entertainment. Nothing more.

I will repectfuly disagree and point out, that sometimes a visual clue can give a deeper insight into the material more than a thousand re readings.

you've got a good point, the movies can't be relied on completely for subtle hints and things, but realy obviouse things can be trusted to ring true a bit because jkr has to aprove everything they put in the movies.

At the end of CoS JKR did an interview, and she stated that she DID NOT tell the film makers the outcome of the story: it is a suprise to them too.

But she does look everything over because she has to make sure that they put the 'important' parts in. I think that we can look at the movies in some ways to help predict what will happen next. If a scene in the book is not in the movie, then it obviously isnt crucial for the plot.

For example: In the interview at the end of the CoS DVD, JKR says there is an important scene that happends in Knockturn Alley... If you read the book section on this, then watch the movie section on this... you will be able to eliminate some areas and select the others that may be of importance ((am I making sense?))

Yes, you are making a lot of sense
That was the same reasoning I had to explain why the Marauders were not mentioned in PoA, as well as the fact that James turned into a stag (unless they somehow include that in GoF)
