I'm not sure about them all but the woman who played Madam Hooch in the first film really wasn't happy with her pay, I remember that much.

I remember hearing/reading that Richard Harris and Robbie Coltrane only took the parts of Dumbledore and Hagrid because their grandchildren came to them and said if they didn't, they would never speak to them again
I agree, Maggie Smith is AMAZING!!!!!

That´s Gary Oldman Snidget, known as Sirius Black in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban".

Maggie Smith did the thing to me a lot of people imply to Alan Rickman and Tom Felton. She really made me love Minerva McGonagall through her portrayal.
I never really liked her exept in the fantastic career advice scene, well and the other scenes with Umbridge. Somehow I never understood why she has to be so strict and serious all the time. But as soon as I saw Maggie Smith in PS I suddenly understood the greatness and soul of that character.
She really deserves all the praise in the world!

Did she ever play something absolutly different then McGonagall? Does anybody know a really untypical role? I have the feeling she gets typecast a lot.

I think McGonagall is probably one of my favourite characters in the books, because she is... awesome, for lack of a better word. I love the way that she handles herself, especially in the prescene of Umbridge.

The only thing I've seen other than HP with her in it is YaYa Sister and Secret Garden. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Maggie Smith in Tea with Mussolini? That was a good movie too.

I thought that she was marvelous in The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, that character was so different than Minerva McGonagall...

I think Dame Maggie Smith is a perfect canidate for the role of Minerva McGonagall. She suits the look McGonagall in decribed in the books and she portrays McGonagall with such preciseness i've set her a model for how I picture McGonagall while reading. Being McGonagall is one of my favorite characters from the books, I was expecting to see a perfect actress to protray her, and the casting did a great job in choosing her to act the part.

Thank you for the explanation of the term Geordie. It seemed to me that the term decribed where her father was from as it says "Her father Nathaniel was a Geordie and a pathologist. Her mother Margaret was a Glaswegian and a secretary." The term Geordie is paired with her mother being a Glaswegian. Thank you again for your confirmation and identification that Geordie refers to the Tyneside region.

tao asks a good question about a Maggie Smith performance that was very different, has anyone seen her in such a role?

She is a great actress, and from what I have heard, she loves a good laugh...
I am hoping that the rumour of her and my all time favourite actor Alan Rickman aka Snape are going to do the tango at the yule ball,I think that would be fantastic...
If this is true, then I bet they shared a good laugh....
She is one of my favourites alongside Judi Dench...

Oh please! I think Snapes canon Yule ball scene is hilarious but if they give me that as compensation, I´ll forgive that cut.

I´d rather say the amazing Gary Oldman is obviously a changeling.
Which brings me back to the question is Maggie Smith able to change that much?

Talking of Dame Maggie and Dame Judi, has anyone seen Ladies in Lavendar yet?
I haven't but soon, I'm hoping.
I have to agree i cant think of anyone else that could have played Prof. McGonagall. She is excellent.
Has anyone had the opportunity to see David Copperfield with Dame Maggie as Betsey Trotwood and Daniel Radcliffe as David Copperfield? It was in 1999 and made for TV.

What a nice fact that she is friends with Judi Dench.

I saw Judi Dench perform in live theatre in the following production:

She was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1996 (1995 season) for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in A Little Night Music at the Royal National Theatre Olivier Stage.

Which brings me back to my previous question. Has anyone seen Maggie Smith perform in the theatre?

Thanks,
Sarah

I thought she was absoluely fantastic as Prof. McGonagall. It was as if JKR had her in mind when she was writing the character.

It's hard to believe that the same Maggie Smith played the head nun in Sister Act. It just proves that she is a fantastic talent who can adapt to any role.
