Snape actually laughed. Trust Dumbledore--and only Dumbledore--to say such a thing.

I can only reiterate what I've said before - I absolutely adore your version of Dumbledore! I love the way you portray their relationship, and your descriptive writing sets the mood and tone without being overbearing. Amazing job!

Re: Snape's Point of View 2: Post-HBP PTSS version.

Thanks, Billywiggy!

I always see Dumbledore and Snape as father and son--with Snape's being the ill-behaved kid who is slowly coming to realize that Dad did know best...

By the way, I believe I have adjusted. Lordy, that signature is lovely! (It's got to be Valmont/Gruber vintage, don't you think?)

Great job, Subtle! Those two quotes are just awesome, and your characterisation is great! Bravo!

*Thank you*

That scene went through some major overhauls...over and over...but the shoe line just kept sticking in my mind.... : )

Re: Snape's Point of View 2: Post-HBP PTSS version.

Zgirnius - I loved the exact detail you made in the potion making as we don't get to see how exact it really is in the books which suggests to me that Jo did not like Science at school! (Probably why she doesn't understand why we all like him!)

Subtle Science - That was fantastic. The Dumbledore and Snape relationship is brilliant exactly how I picture it in my mind. Eagerly awaiting the next one!

And to everyone who commented on my piece thank you! Yes I have decided to make Fenrir a vile creature because I honestly see no redeeming qualities in the character from what we know of him! Moony's Angel I am sorry if I gave you sleepless nights through my work but I think that everyone is getting slightly too comfortable. I am an avid John Le Carre reader (just finished the Constant Gardener!)

You'll see why I said that in a couple of days time!

Billywiggy - How dare you change that signature! I loved the last one so much so I have a bigger version of it on my bedroom wall and never tire of looking at it and now you have changed. Most upset!

Re: Snape's Point of View 2: Post-HBP PTSS version.

I came thinking I was all caught up and found I had more reading to do!

HermioneSnape--The next to the last episode: Cute, his being mistaken for a rock muscian, or fan. I still have trouble believing that Lupin or Harry would let slide Snape being a murderer so easily, without further explanation or exoneration, though I realize that is not your focus.

As for the conclusion: I had trouble believing that Ron and Ginny would turn down an opportunity to go rescue Hermione, though I realize you wanted Harry and Snape to do this together.

These lines made me laugh:
Quote:
I saw her squirm and she was murmuring something, something like 'Please Professor I know the answer let me answer!'
Quote:
his hair unruly like his personality,
I too am glad to see Sev and Harry work together to rescue Hermione.

Billywiggy--I like your episode of Snape and Lily in the library.

Quote:
“An accident?” he asked with skepticism, “I take it you were with him?” His voice was very quiet now. He didn’t like the implications of this. If that bast- . . . if he hurt a hair on her head . . .
Hmmmm, I like the subtle way that you suggest a possible dark side to her relationship with James, though you leave it ambiguous.

Zgirnius, good job imagining those fateful beginnings. And I enjoyed your description of Snape tinkering with the Wolfsbane Potion. Some nice foreshadowing at the end.

PotionStudent, I liked how Severus experiences Dumbledore’s legilimency very much differently from Voldemort’s.

Subtle--A very, very nice scene telling Dumbledore about Voldemort’s anger at Lucius and the why.

I was interested to see that Snape and Dumbledore both seemed to have an understanding to say as little as possible. Don’t know if you read my Snape-Voldemort installment where the dark lord legilimizes Snape looking for Dumbledore's speculation on his immortality--?. While writing that, it made me wonder about how openly Snape and Dumbledore would speak of certain things. They very well could have an understanding to minimize what Snape might have to conceal. To speak in code as it were. We seem to be on the same wavelength with that.

Re: Snape's Point of View 2: Post-HBP PTSS version.

Definite wavelengths, The Black Adder!

It seems logical, to me, that both men would avoid adding to what Snape must attempt to Occlude from Voldemort. Obviously, Snape is good--but so is Voldemort, and why tempt fate? My take is that Dumbledore may not tell Snape certain things--such as the complete prophecy--not because he doesn't trust Snape or because he has some bizarre need to be in total control...but simply to protect Snape to whatever extent he can. I think the two of them live "Need To Know" every minute of every day--what Snape must know, in order to do his work and survive, and what can be left in the shadows...again, so he can survive....

Wow, subtle, another great POV! I love the way you contrast Dumbledore and Voldemort (and not just in this one)...

I knew all those hours spent in labs in college would come to some good use, someday...

Actually, it is believed that the character of Snape (or more likely, just his classroom manner) was inspired by a Chemistry teacher Rowling had in school. So,it seems, her memories of secondary school science classes may not be the fondest...
The Sunday Herald, Jun 22, 2003
Quote:
Rowling enrolled in Wyedean Comprehensive in 1976. It is said that her chemistry teacher, John Nettleship, is the blueprint for the cold character of Professor Snape.
I actually read a short interview with the teacher somewhere a couple of months ago but was not able to locate it again...

Rowling's 'spell' on science teacher

A Monmouthshire school teacher is believed to be the model for the "evil" Professor Snape in the Harry Potter books.
John Nettleship is the head of science at the Chepstow comprehensive school where the books' author JK Rowling went to school.
A BBC 1 Wales documentary on Friday will feature the author returning to Wyedean School in south east Wales where Mr Nettleship still works.

JK Rowling: Has written a 'sophisticated retaliation'
But, after the shock of learning that the character who gives Harry Potter a hard time in science lessons is at least partly based on himself, he has come to terms with his new-found fame.

Professor Snape is portrayed in the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, as a brooding and fearsome lecturer who delights in belittling the young wizard. He is played in the film adaptation by Alan Rickman and, as Pottermania began to grow, Mr Nettleship was first challenged over the link by reporters from Britain's national newspapers.
It was then that he discovered his friends and family had already made the connection between himself and the terrifying teacher long before the story hit the big screen.

Mr Nettleship was shocked to learn that his wife, Shirley, agreed that JK Rowling had used him as a template for the character.
He said: "I was rather distressed about this but Shirley said 'I'm afraid so: I realised that a long time ago but I didn't dare tell you'."

"I'm quite sure that a lot of the pupils thought that I was as bad as the character, at least that's the way that I came over to them."
But, as if by magic, he has since come to believe that his former pupil's literary work is more of a gentle, if wile, way of paying him back for ensuring that people always paid attention during his lessons. And he has a glimmer of hope that the meaner aspects of Professor Snape's character are not based on him at all.

"It's a bit comforting, but in the main interview that Joanna (Rowling) has given, she does say Snape is based on three people.
"I'll just have to hope that the worst bits of Snape are based on two different ones, won't I?"

He added: "There are ways of pupils getting their revenge, but this is a much more sophisticated retaliation."
This excerpt below is just about Nettleship, but the rest of the article is very enlightening, including an incident of bullying and also information about her first marriage.

Quote:
The Scotsman Mon 16 Jun 2003

When she made the move to secondary school, Joanne found herself accompanied by her mother. After 12 years bringing up her daughters, Anne Rowling secured the position of lab technician at Wyedean Comprehensive under the supervision of John Nettleship, the school’s head of science.

Nettleship remembers Joanne, whom he taught, as a bright but quiet girl and considers himself an early inspiration for Professor Snape. "I think chemistry maybe made the most impact on her because I did teach her about the philosopher’s stone, the alchemist’s stone. Possibly she knew about it already, but I did include it in my lessons and explained how it turned things to gold."

He then chuckles before adding: "It seems to have worked for her, hasn’t it." Although bright, she was not the most enthusiastic student, as Nettleship, who is now retired, recalls: "Her attitude in the science lessons was more like Harry’s in the potions class rather than Hermione’s."

That link on the second doesn't work, I just discovered. It's possible that they have the whole thing at The Leaky Cauldron.

So Hermione's a werewolf now? And how did Fenrir find Grimmauld Place? What happened to all the protections on it?

well, I suppose since Dumbledore died, the secret was kind of out, and Bella could have told him. Poor Hermione....And did Mrs. Weasley get scratched by him too? I think so, but I may have read wrong. I love your story hermione_snape.

Okay a quick reply, Turtletape has got it practically right although I do wish you' d all be patient as the answer will be revealed. I love it that questions get asked but please I am writing this like a soap opera.

Yes it's full moon that entry so she would be and Molly did get scratched but she won't be one as he was using his claws, and we know from the Snape incident with Lupin that if you only get scratched by a Werewolf then you won't turn into one.

Thank you Turtletape for liking my story.

O, you're welcome. I was just a little fuzzy on if you were a werewolf with only a scratch, guess that's some good news, no wereMolly. *shivers at the thought* I guess with all the questions you now know how JKR feels....yea.

AUUUUGH! Hermione!!!

Well, at least she won't forget to take her potion! (Assuming that she lives long enough to escape!) But I have full confidence that Snape will rescue her! *waits for next installment*

Re: Snape's Point of View 2: Post-HBP PTSS version.

Firstly, sorry about being absent on this thread for so long - I must have unsubscribed without realising it, easy enough to do I suppose (or else I am a complete Dunderhead *headdesk*) - seems I have a LOT of catching up to do

But anyway - on to something a little more ... interactive ...

I checked this first with Inkwolf, to make sure it was ok to do this as a PoV

I've just written what is known as a Mad Lib, though this will be a (family-friendly) story based on a 'typical' ( ) day in class for Snape, teaching Defense Against The Dark Arts. I'll leave this Lib open for entries from now until February 13 (to give people enough time to come up with the words they want), after which I'll close it, & then post your stories.

To participate, owl me your entries (please don't post them as replies here), and you'll find a list (in order) of what I will need from you here. Have fun, & remember keep them entries nice & clean, as I'll be posting it here, one way or another** .

** the Lib story itself is a little over 1,000 words long, so I'll probably be either (1) posting everyone's story links, with highlights, or (2) posting everyone's story links, along with a whole version of the PoV here, with bits from everyone's contributions & who-did-what in footnotes at the end.

Lib Entries Are Now Closed - I'll Be Posting Results Shortly
