My heart and prayers go out to of you in the Mormon community on your sudden loss. I am not Mormon myself, but I can empathize with the loss of a great leader.

Re: The Latter-day Saint Thread v. 8.0

Thanks to those not of our faith who have offered sympathy!
I think one of the greatest things about President Hinckley was how he reached out to everybody all over the world whether they were members or not. President Bush even gave some comments calling him a great leader and a great patriot. I don't have the link, but it was in the yahoo newsroom.

I was talking to my mom today and she mentioned to me that even though to us he seems like the only president we have known, (I think I was in eighth grade when he was called.) to people a little older it seems this way too because President Hunter and President Benson were both very sick during presidencies and President Hinkley was the first counselor to both of them which was a very vital role. Besides the few years he worked for the railroad, most of his adult life was spent working and serving in the church. That is a a long time.

Just a quick "aah" moment out of the mouths of babes: My 4 year old nephew told my brother this morning, "President Hinkley died last night. I will miss him."

Re: The Latter-day Saint Thread v. 8.0

Thank you to everyone who has offered sympathy. He was such a great man, you could just see the love in his eyes for everyone. It was almost like having an extra grandpa, the way we all felt about him.

I wish I had known to dress in church clothes today. Everyone was sending around texts about wearing sunday best or something yellow to honor him by. I would have risked wearing a skirt in this crazy weather, had I known.

I'm grateful to the news stations as well, for covering his life. I know people were complaining about the news being on instead of a movie, but the news anchor just told them, "This man deserves to be honored and that's the way it's going to be!"

Today, for me at least, felt very somber. I'm feeling pretty depressed about it, but I'm hoping that soon I will be able to rejoice in his life when I remember him, rather than thinking of the world's loss. There's no doubt in my mind that he is in the midst of a big crowd in heaven, surrounded by our brothers and sisters that have passed before us. It helps to know that he's with Marjorie again.

I'm catholic and we know what it's like to have lost a long-time leader of the Church. From everything I've heard he was a great and beloved man. My heart goes out to you folks.

Re: The Latter-day Saint Thread v. 8.0

I haven't been here for awhile, but I knew there would be kind people remembering President Hinckley. I want to add my thankfullness for what a great and inspiring man and Prophet he was. I am older than most of you. My first prophet was David O. McKay. It is never easy to loose a Prophet, but there is comfort in knowing the Lord won't leave us long without sending another in his stead. My prayers go out to the Apostles during this time.

Sage it was very nice to hear from you again. You are such a thoughtful person. I hope your family is well and happy.

Re: The Latter-day Saint Thread v. 8.0

not to change the subject from President Hinckley, but has anyone seen the new singles ward movie, Singles 2nd Ward?

I found myself surprisingly entertained. It was much better than the 1st, at least (which I attribute to less of the actress who played Cammie.), and there were parts that made me laugh out loud. Horribly stereotypical to the extreme, bad writing/acting in parts, and still kind of dumb, but surprisingly entertaining at the same time. Kirby Heyborne was destined to be in every single Mormon movie ever made, methinks. What did everyone think?

Are there any other good Mormon movies out right now?

Thank you to everyone who offered their sympathy. He really was a great leader and the apostles to come after him have some very large shoes to fill.

AH!!! I thought I was the only one who'd seen this movie outside of my ward. Half of the actors and extras are from my ward thanks to the casting director being in my ward. So, my young women's leader was Kirby Heyborne's mom (you know the one with all the cheeseballs) and my next door neighbor and best friend's grandpa was the old man who died. He really is a very funny old man.

Re: The Latter-day Saint Thread v. 8.0

GH, you'll like it I think. I don't want to spoil you, but my favorite part is when
Spoiler: show
Deverl randomly walks into the wedding reception...hasn't been there the whole movie and then just waltzes in at the end. It's hilarious, because every singles ward has a guy that acts just like that!

In case anyone wanted to know, I just found a really good Jack Weyland novel called As Always, Dave. I loved it and am recommending it to everyone!

Also...I caved and watched The Work & The Glory movie. And was slightly surprised! I was under the impression that the 3 movies covered the entire series of books, but the first movie only covered the first book. I haven't read after the 1st, but I'm going to get around to it one of these days. I was kinda mad they left out Jessi/Josh stuff for the most part...In the first book they were married and lost the baby before the end of the book. In the movie, it didn't show anything of them except when she helped him cheat at poker and when he yelled at her about the letters. Jessi is my favorite character from the books, so it was kinda disappointing.

What a beautiful funeral. I loved the bagpipes after the grave dedication, too.
I love how the reporters are breaking a little and having a few tears. You rarely see that.
I'm watching the after-commentary right now and they just said that not only did the bells toll at the City and County Building toll as the funeral cortege drove by, but also the Cathedral of the Madeline. So many people love this man.

You're right, Pegasus. He was loved by almost everyone. My family is friends with a local Monastery, and one of the monks in particular is close with us. He was listening to the funeral in his car today as he came to visit us, and he watched the end of it with us. I'm glad I got to see the funeral. For me, it was a happy experience to get to look back on his life and hear the memories those closest to him shared. I especially loved President Monson's story about their doctor telling him to tell President Hinckley to use his cane when he walks instead of waving it around.

I loved Pres. Monson's response. Can you imagine being such close friends with someone for 70 some-odd years, most of it in Church service?

Yeah, that was a great story. I love hearing stories about him. In testimony meeting today, a woman got up and talked about how she and her husband were at a Hawaii airport a few years ago and they came face to face with the prophet. They stood there, dumbfounded, before President Hinckley broke the silence and said cheerfully: "Hello, brother and sister. And who might you be?"

I don't know about anybody else, but before the funeral started they were spanning the chairs where the twelve sat and showed President Hinckley's chair empty, and I bawled. My husband was laughing at me for crying before it even began. I will miss hearing him at conference so much. It was a nice funeral. It is amazing how long President Monson and President Hinckley had been friends.
It really struck me how much his family must have sacrificed to share their father with the church. I felt such gratitude for the Hinckleys for this and was glad they were able to turn the cameras off at the cemetery and just be a family.

Thank you, chparadise. You are so thoughtful. I need the comfort right now.

I cried so hard when I heard about President Hinckley's passing. I did the only thing I knew I should: I prayed. As soon as I began, I felt at peace and stopped crying because I knew that he was going on to a better place. And he could no wbe reunited with his beloved wife. I kno wit must have been very hard on him to be separated from her for so long, but now I am happy that he can be with her again. I loved President Hinckley so much. He had been the Prophet for almost my entire life...the only one I could remember. He was very kind, righteous, and had a great sense of humor. I will miss him a lot, but I know that Heavenly Father was calling him home. We will miss you, President Hinckley.

Wow, I just spilled my guts, there. Sorry.

That's great! It makes you wonder how often General Authorities get that.

The media handled the whole thing very well, I thought. I was touched by the empty chair, too. So was Pres. Monson, for that matter.

Re: The Latter-day Saint Thread v. 8.0

I didn't get to watch the funeral. But I really wanted to. I wish I could've seen it, too.

Since we're kind of on the subject of stories about Prsident Hinckley, I thought I would share some that my Sunday School teacher told me today in church. :

She said that that once when a bunch of the church leaders were meeting, they were all lined up in their black suits and President Hinckley said, "You all look like a bunch of penguins."

Another one was that every Thursday some church leaders would meet with the Prophet in the temple. They would meet in the church history center (?) right outside the temple and then ride a golf cart underground onto the temple grounds, and President Hickley would wear a hat and coat. Even though they were underground, he could tell when thye entered the temple grounds because he always took his hat off. That really touched me.

And has anyone else heard the talk he gave when he talked about the sign on the rusty barbed wire fence in Texas...? He said it reminded him of his life. The sign read:
Burned out by drought,
Drowned out by flud waters,
Et out by jackrabbits,
Sold out by sheriff,
Still here!
I thought that was really funny.

And there was the time in the dedication of the San Antonio temple when he said, "When you get to be my age, you never buy green bananas." I loved that one.

He was such a funny guy. I'll miss him so much.

Re: The Latter-day Saint Thread v. 8.0

My friend's friend's brother was President Hinckley's bodyguard and everyday when President Hinckley would walk past him, he'd hit him on the top of the head with his cane. Her brother thought "Ok it's annoying and kinda hurts but it's still cool cause he's the prophet!" And then, one day, President Hinckley came up to him, handed him the cane and said, "Your turn". And he said when he was stunned and said No politely, that he'd never seen the Prophet laugh so hard. I love stories like that.

Penguins... that made me smile. The temple grounds story is good too. I hadn't heard the story about the sign, but it's a good one. Green Bananas hahaha... It took me a second to figure that one out but I love it.

Re: The Latter-day Saint Thread v. 8.0

So the new presidency is President Monson with President Eyering and President Uchtdorf, right? I like President Uchtdorf, he's a cool guy!

Was there another member of the Twelve called as well, to fill President Uchtdorf's spot?
